We thank you for the opportunity to work with you regarding your colocation needs in Melbourne,. We can colocate standard rack-mountable servers or other kinds of standard or nonstandard telecommunications equipment. We have space available from 1 RU up to full enclosed, lockable cabinets and private, caged areas and suites. This facility which is located only a few kilometres from the city centre is only the second carrier neutral data centre in Melbourne. Facility The data centre is located in a stand alone building unlike most data centres in Melbourne allowing full control over security, cooling, power and so on. There currently is 200m 2 of available customer floor space with an additional 400m2 expected to be ready by 2009.
The facility was custom built as a data centre and features not only telehousing space but also additional facilities such as meeting rooms and training areas. The public meeting rooms and training facilities are available for hire to telehousing customers making this a perfect hosting location.
Security The data centre is monitored 24x7 by security cameras along the perimetre of the building and also within the colocation suites. The entrance to the facility and customer areas are controlled by swipe card and biometric identification to prevent unauthorised intruders from accessing the data centre or customer equipment.
Power Supply and Redundancy The data center has been designed so that all equipment can receive adequate power even in the time of crisis. In the advent of loss of power through the main supply UPS systems in the N+1 configuration can supply power to the racks and can be recharged by the backup generators.
The UPS batteries are able to supply power for a maximum of 10 minutes at full load which is adequate time to allow the generators to start supplying power 1 minute after being started. The generator is able to supply 1000kVA and can supply continuous power as long as there are adequate fuel reserves. Cooling Systems The data center floor has been raised and cooling ducts have been constructed so that heat is able to dissapate properly. In addition there are Liebert air conditioning systems in the N+1 configuration which keep the temperature of the server rooms at a constant 21 C +/- 2 C. In the event of a unit failing an alarm is triggered to inform the NOC and ensure that it is repaired promptly.
The air conditioning systems also are responsible for controlling the relative humidity and keep it at a constant 45% to prevent water vapour damaging electrical equipment. In addition to both temperature and humidity regulation the air quality is monitored and filters are used to remove dust and other particles from the air. Fire Detection and Supression The facility uses an advanced fire and smoke detection system which is able to detect tiny particles of smoke in the air before a fire breaks out. The system uses a gas analyzer which can intelligently determine the air composition and alert both the network operations office as well as activate the fire supression system if needed.
In the case where an actual fire breaks out the data center employs the start of the art INERGEN gas suppression system which works by suffocating a fire. INERGEN contains only natural gases taken from the air and when discharged, cannot cause any harm to the environment or to materials in the protected enclosure. The composition of INERGEN is 52% Nitrogen, 40% Argon and 8% Carbon Dioxide, making it an inert gas mixture. This fire extinguishing method is to physically reduce oxygen to a level that does not support combustion. There is no risk of decomposition with the use of INERGEN allowing a gentler discharge as compared to Halon and synthetic gases. INERGEN can be designed to vary the speed of extinguishment as required by the application. Most applications are protected effectively by a discharge time of 60 seconds to 120 seconds. Due to its physical properties INERGEN ensures a very homogenous mixture and a very long holding time for the extinguishing concentration. i s INERGEN contains only natural gases. After discharge it will not decompose into toxic and corrosive chemicals due to contact with fire or hot surfaces. This a very important advantage unique to inert gases.
Data Centre Floor & Customer Area We provide standard APC Netshelter 46 RU racks as well as locally made models in the customer area however if customers wish to supply their own racks we can lease raw floor space. The colocation racks receive power from the local distribution panels, which are in turn fed from UPS output A and UPS output B (A + B dual redundancy). If required, racks may be provisioned with a second power supply (B) either during initial provisioning or at a later date, with no service interruption.
Network Connectivity & Communications The data centre has links to a range of carriers including Telstra, Optus, PIPE Networks and Uecomm. As the facility is centrally located we are able to provision other providers if required by customers.
