Stockholm Helsinki Tallinn You are in for the time of your life at the Northern Light Choral Festival 2010! I have directed choral tours in Sweden, and it is absolutely breathtaking. Stockholm is an unbelievable city built on small islands, and full of culture, art and a real combination of the old and new world wrapped into one. The appreciation for choral music in Sweden is extraordinary, and what a privilege to perform great works from all over the planet in such an embracing atmosphere! I am also writing a work to celebrate the event, and your groups will be part of the debut at the final gala concert. Come tour Sweden and beyond I hope to see you there! Z. LEADER MESSAGE FROM LISA It is my pleasure to extend a personal invitation for you to join me in Stockholm for the Northern Light International Choral Festival. This opportunity to gather for a unique musical experience in Sweden s radiant capital city is something I am thrilled to be a part of. Come join gifted singers in the Women s Choir, performing an engaging repertoire of Mendelssohn, Vaughan Williams, Copland, and music native to our host country. Nothing can compare to the experience of singing great works in a beautiful city with people brought together from around the world with a common love of music. Please join us in Stockholm for an unforgettable adventure! REPERTOIRE Mendelssohn: Veni Domine Vaughan Williams: Selections from Folksongs of the Four Seasons Copland: Zion s Walls Aguiar: Salmo 150 And a selection of Swedish music 3 Northern Light Choral Festival

DESTINATION SWEDEN - Sweden has moved from its Viking origins to the Nobel Peace Prize in just a few centuries. It is renowned for its progressive society, great people and high standard of living. Swedish folk music traditions have been eclipsed since ABBA took the world by storm. Since Helsinki Tallinn then a thriving modern music scene has developed. Stockholm The city that floats - is built on roughly twenty islands in Lake Mälaren and although it has around 1.8 million inhabitants it still has the intimacy of a small town. It is one of the most beautiful national capitals in the world with a particularly spectacular Old Town precinct. FINLAND - Finland is comprised of a vast expanse of forests and lakes with towns full of friendly people. The coastal regions are a sailing and fishing paradise during the months of the midnight sun. Inland, the largest unspoilt wilderness in Europe attracts thousands of trekkers every year. In the south, the capital Helsinki is a paradise for lovers of art and architecture. The essence of Finnish music is deeply embedded in a unique national heritage which celebrates a cultural awakening dating from the compilation of the Kalevala in 1835. Helsinki - on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, is the country s largest city and the centre of its cultural, financial and economic activity. Helsinki balances beautiful landscapes with a bustling modern city. It boasts a busy metropolis with colorful market squares and many open air concerts in the summer. ESTONIA - Estonia covers an area of approximately 28,000 sq miles (being 220 miles from east to west and 150 miles north to south). Sweden is Estonia s western neighbor while Russia s St. Petersburg is just across the north-eastern border. Estonia s strategic location as a link between East and West has ensured its importance over thousands of years. Estonians have been living in this part of the Baltic lands since approximately 2,500 B.C., making them the longest settled of the European peoples. Choral music is such a vital part of the Estonian culture that the independence movement which led to Estonia becoming independent of the Soviet Union was called the Singing Revolution. Tallinn - there are few places in Europe where the aura of the 14th and 15th centuries survives intact as well as it does in Tallinn s Old Town. Here a jumble of medieval walls and winding cobbled streets is maintained along side a modern city nestled below the famed Cathedral Hill, Toompea. Stockholm Northern Light Choral Festival 4
