Grant F. Walton Center for Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis (CRSSA) Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey CRSSA DataBank, J. Bognar, 20110121 Internet Map Servers: Live Geospatial Data and Maps Over the Internet for Use in ArcGIS Desktop (e.g. ArcMap), ArcGIS Explorer, and/or Internet Browser Internet map servers and services technology give you the ability to access and utilize geospatial data for your research, projects, and assignments via the internet. Many organizations serve vector and raster-based geospatial data using ESRI s ArcIMS, ArcGIS Server, and Open Geospatial Consortium (OGS) WMS capabilities. For GIS users, these data can be loaded into an ArcGIS Desktop module, such as ArcMap, to be integrated with locally and/or network stored data. This gives you more options to choose from when considering the data layers to utilize for your project and maps. The NJ Office of Information Technology s Office of GIS is one example of a state organization serving geospatial data for public consumption. Its focus is to provide these internet map services of various data themes such as orthophotography/imagery, as well as framework vector data authored by other New Jersey organizations, primarily the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. Provided in this document is a starter list of internet map servers/services. Before proceeding: Please educate yourself about internet map services by reading documentation from your class instructor, ESRI desktop or web help, ESRI support forums, blogs, etc. Understanding the pros and cons of services is important before making the leap. Understand the type of services, such as an image service (IS), feature service (FS), and web map service (WMS). Knowing more about what these services are and how they serve data will help you load the appropriate type of service for your specific GIS needs. Discovering more about internet map services will also help when determining whether or not it is the best choice versus the more traditional approach of downloading/copying the entire data set to your PC or network, or using the locally stored data. NJDEP Bureau of GIS internet map servces Title: NJ Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) GIS Data (Image Map Service) Publisher: NJDEP * Image Service: NJDEP There are 60+ GIS layers available via ArcGIS, but additional GIS data are found on NJDEP s NJGeoWeb internet browser map application. *NOTE: Please be aware more layers are available as an IMS through the internet browser interface, NJGeoWeb. This browser-based interface is the primary service for these NJDEP layers. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/gis/geowebsplash.htm Title: NJ Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), New Jersey Geological Survey (NJGS) GIS Data (Image Map Service) Publisher: NJDEP NJGS * Image Service: imapnjgeology Geology GIS layers available via ArcGIS, but note these are also found on NJDEP s NJGeoWeb internet browser map applications (Geology profile). *NOTE: Please be aware more layers are available as an IMS through the internet browser interface, NJGeoWeb, this being Geology profile. This browser-based interface is the primary service for these NJDEP layers. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/gis/geowebsplash.htm III. US Geological Survey National Map Seamless Server USGS Seamless Data Warehouse primarily serves three types of data: 1) Orthoimagery, 2) Elevation, and 3) Land Cover. These are made available for the public as Web Map Services (WMS). They are intended to be viewed via browser using the Seamless Viewer (being phased out by USGS), TNM Viewer (new viewer developed), or in your GIS: ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Explorer. 1) To get the list of USGS services:
There are too many USGS WMS services to list in this document, so please go to the website using your web browser, http://seamless.usgs.gov/. In the left navigation pane, you will see the html links to Home, About, Available Data, Tools to Access Data, FAQs, and Contact. It is recommended you get an overview of the site (About). Either click directly on Mapping Services under Tools, or for more information about the data, click on the links underneath Available Data. Either way, the Service Access List will give you the WMS list for a particular theme (e.g. HRO high resolution orthophotography). 2) To get the link for the services: To get the link to be input into ArcGIS, click on Get Link. An XML document will appear in its coded tree style. The link address to be input into ArcGIS is the 9 th line down from the top, highlighted in blue (WMS links generally appear with the question mark?, example: http://ims.cr.usgs.gov:80/wmsconnector/com.esri.wms.esrimap/blm_ortho?). IV. ArcGIS.com Services ESRI has recently developed ArcGIS.com (also recently known as ArcGIS Online ), which is a website built for GIS users to utilize ready to use content for maps and applications. In ESRI s own words: ArcGIS.com includes a set of ready-to-use content to help you build maps and applications. This ArcGIS content includes maps, data, and tasks that can be used in a variety of ArcGIS (client s) applications The maps and tasks are generally worldwide in coverage and most are updated at least twice per year. ESRI breaks down the maps and tasks into the following: basemaps, demographic maps, reference and specialty maps, and tasks. For more information, please refer to these starting points on the ESRI website: ArcGIS Content: http://resources.arcgis.com/content/arcgis-content/about ArcGIS Online Maps & Tasks http://resources.arcgis.com/content/arcgis-online-maps-tasks/about Example:
To load a map into an ArcMap10 mxd, go to http://resources.arcgis.com/content/arcgisonline-maps-tasks/about. Choose (click) one of the maps, World Topographic Map, the map will open up in the browser. This can be added to your ArcMap session. In the left pane, click on Open this service in: ArcGIS Desktop. The data will then appear in your ArcMap session. V. Searching for more internet map services There are many internet map services available on the web for use in your ArcGIS session or in an internet browser, so having search engines to help you find these services is essential. Here are some places to start: New Jersey Geographic Information Network (NJGIN) http://njgin.state.nj.us To search for map services on NJGIN authored by various NJ organizations: - At http://njgin.state.nj.us, click on Launch Explorer button - Follow the provided directions. - In Step 2, for content type, select Live Data and Maps - Use the other search options as needed - Click Start Search - Search results will appear - In the search results, choose one of interest and click View Details for the service s metadata documentation (please read) - The online linkage information will be found under the Data Storage and Access Information section Example: Online Linkage: Server=http://njgin.state.nj.us; Service=NJ_LULC_2002_FS; ServiceType=feature To load this example in an ArcMap: Add data > GIS Server > Add ArcIMS (the metadata states it s an image service ) > type or copy/paste the URL into the pop up GUI. So in the above example: Server=http://njgin.state.nj.us > then click on Get List > Choose NJ_LULC_2002 Geodata.gov : US Maps & DATA http://geodata.gov
Federal, State & Local Geographic Data information To search for map services: - At http://geodata.gov, click on the Search button, Show Advanced Search Options or Find Data or Map Services - For map services, under Content Type, choose Selected Type(s), and select Live Data and Maps - Include any other types, keywords, places (geography), etc. as needed - Click Search, search results will appear - In the search results, click on one of the listings. In the pop-up window, you ll see several options depending on the type of service: View Full Metadata: Full documentation Go To Website: navigates you the service s supporting website Add To Map: map service opens up in a geodata.gov Map Viewer Add to Globe: if available, opens up WMS in Google Earth Service Availability: tech information for the map service. This is useful because it provides a quick lookup for the service type (e.g. WMS), and the URL, which is useful if looking to add into ArcGIS (if possible). Contact Owner: has organization s contact info for map service * Note: not all map services are intended for ArcGIS. Some are for web browser only.
