1 Using ArcGIS for ios with Data on ArcGIS Online Article ID : TT Software : ArcGIS for ios, ArcGIS.com Platform : Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 Date : 1 st July, 2011 Introduction This Smart Tip is going to share how we can utilize the free resources provided by Esri. They are ArcGIS for ios and free online map on ArcGIS.com. We are going to create a web map and add features on ArcGIS.com. We can access the created web map via ios application. With feature service serving from ArcGIS Server, you further enhance your web map service with editing function on ios application. The following is a brief architecture for serving maps from ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS.com to mobile either ArcGIS for ios: Data resources ArcGIS for ios consumes web maps. They can be map services from ArcGIS.com or feature services from an existing ArcGIS Server. ArcGIS.com is a website for working with maps and other types of geographic information. You can search for existing maps, applications and tools; you can also create maps and share your maps and applications with others and groups. ArcGIS for ios ArcGIS for ios is a universal application for the iphone, ipad, and ipod Touch. It is a free application that any ios-supported device user can download directly from the Apple App Store. The ArcGIS for ios application allows you to use any ArcGIS Server services in the form of web maps. 2 Data collection Share with other users Demonstration 1. Create Web Map on ArcGIS.com A. Signing in to ArcGIS.com : Once you've registered your Esri Global Account for ArcGIS Online, you can sign in to ArcGIS.com and start adding and sharing contents. B. Creating Web Map Once you ve signed in, all the web maps that you created will be shown. Click Create Map to create a new web map. C. Adding Basemap to the web map Click Basemap and add a free map such as Topographic as below. You can search and zoom to the area of All rights reserved. P. 2 of 8

3 interested; for example: Hong Kong. D. Adding an operation layer to the web map Click Add > Add Layers. You can find and add an operational layer hosted by ArcGIS Online or any other ArcGIS server. 4 E. Editing on the web Click Edit to add features. In this case, a poi is added as my office. Enter all other fields and click close to finish the editing. F. Save the web map Click Save to save the web map as FaviouritePlaces in this example. Once the web map was successfully added, it will appear in My Content as below: All rights reserved. P. 4 of 8

Accessing the ArcGIS Online ios Click Find Maps and sign in to ArcGIS Online after clicking the button Sign in to ArcGIS Online C. Adding web map created on ArcGIS online.com Once you have successfully singed in > Click My Maps. All the supported map in My Content on the ArcGIS.com will be shown. Click FavouritePlaces > Open. 6 D. Navigating the web map on ios You can pan, zoom using IOS gestures to navigate the map. By clicking on the target feature, you can view its attribute. All rights reserved. P. 6 of 8

7 E. Adding new features via ios application Click the icon on the top right hand corner > click Collect to open the Collect panel. Fill in the attributes and click Finish. You can place the feature manually to the corresponding location. You can also using your current location by clicking. If you want to erase the feature, simply click the erase button. > click Accept to finish the editing. All rights reserved. P. 7 of 8

8 F. Sharing the maps and adding maps to My Favorite You can add your favorite maps to My Favorites by clicking Add to Favorites. The My Favorites panel synchronizes with My Favorites on ArcGIS.com.
