Pharmacy Department JOB DESCRIPTION POST TITLE : Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician GRADE : Year 1 70% Top of Band 4 Year 2 75% Top of Band 4 DEPARTMENT : Pharmacy Department DIRECTORATE : Clinical Support Services ACCOUNTABLE TO : Head of Pharmacy RESPONSIBLE TO : Deputy Chief Pharmacist Operations MANAGED BY : Specialist Technician Education and Training Managed on a day to day basis by Section Head of current rotation LIAISES WITH : Patients Pharmacy staff Other hospital staff College tutors JOB PURPOSE To effectively participate in the provision of pharmacy services to Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and off site units relating to the Central Northwest London Mental Health Trust under appropriate supervision for grade and experience. Undertake training as specified in the Student Technician Learning Contract and the NVQ3 standards for pharmacy services.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES A comprehensive training programme will be delivered to NVQ3 level by attendance at a recognised college of further education providing the NVQ3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences on day release course and supported by further training in each rotational area. Technical Services Distribution Dispensary Buying Office General 1. Undertake NVQ3 training in line with defined objectives. 2. Participate in robot loading rotas. 3. Participate in ward top-up service. 4. Participate in stock control measures, including expiry date checks and stock rotation. 5. Ensure completion of daily monitoring records on a rotational basis. 6. Keep up to date with and follow with relevant departmental procedures. 7. Participate in the training of new staff. 8. Follow relevant procedures for each rotation, including adherence to GMP, orange guide and COSSH regulations etc. in order to deliver the service in a safe and effective manner. 9. Attend and participate in departmental meetings and participate in departmental quality initiatives. 10. Attend and participate in monthly lunch time Pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician meetings. 11. Prepare and present to the department on a variety of topics in Clinpharm sessions or as required. 12. Undertake any other duties as reasonably required by the Head of Pharmacy. Technical Services 13. Prepare batches of medicine for over labelling and pre-packing. 14. Assist in the preparation of sterile and non-sterile products. 15. Prepare extemporaneous products including creams, ointments and suspensions. 16. Assist in the daily, weekly and monthly cleaning of isolators and preparation areas. 17. Assemble emergency trays and boxes. Distribution 16. Participate in a stock supply to wards, clinics and departments based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, and off site unit including mental health units, healthcare centres and GP surgeries. This includes performing top ups, inputting orders on JAC, picking and checking medicines and packing appropriately for distribution to wards / departments. 17. Deal with basic stock and top up queries. 18. Liaise with the relevant pharmacists to ensure wards / departments have sufficient stock and maintain an efficient to-follow system. 19. Return to stock or dispose of all medicines returned from wards / departments. 20. Perform the weekly emergency drug checklist 21. Perform picking of IV orders daily.
Dispensary 22. Accurately dispense and issue prescriptions including controlled drugs 23. Identify potential problems regarding the lack of availability of medicines for individual prescriptions, seeking advice on suitable alternatives or agreed delivery timetable. 24. Ensure medication is dispensed to meet agreed delivery times and to minimise waiting times for patients. 25. Receive prescriptions from hospital staff in accordance with dispensary procedures. Prioritise prescriptions according to urgency. Inform ward staff of prescription progress where necessary. 26. Ensure that the exemption status of patients is checked in order to accurately collect prescription fees. 27. Calculate prescription charges from outpatients and private patients as per procedures. 28. Counsel patients regarding their medication regimes in order to ensure complete patient understanding including benefits of their medication and possible side effects. These may be patients with certain barriers, e.g. hearing problems, language issues. 29. Deal with queries from patients and other hospital staff, referring complex issues to supervisor or line manager. 30. Effectively deal with patients who are discontented with aspects of the service e.g. waiting times and refer to senior member of staff for resolution. 31. Maintain high quality of data input of patient information into the pharmacy computer system in order to ensure excellent labelling standards for dispensed medicines 31.32. Ensure stock levels of all products are accurate and support the appropriate ordering of stock through liaison with the buying office. Inaccuracies in all medicines should be investigated before being referred to line manager without delay. 32.33. Responsible for the maintenance of a specific area of the dispensary in order to make sure that medicines are stored appropriately and in-date. 33.34. Participate in the dispensing and maintenance of clinical trial medication. 34.35. Perform the daily KTAKEM count. Buying Office 35.36. Process orders for medication supplies including assisting with sourcing urgent supplies. 36.37. Dealing with any out of stock queries, liaising with the relevant staff as appropriate. 37.38. Check the daily KTAKEM count and weekly emergency drug list check and investigate/deal with any discrepancies. 38.39. Investigate any stock discrepancies, referring to a more senior member of staff when required. 39.40. Investigate manufacturers delays, update the list of delays and ensure all relevant staff are informed. 40.41. Book in deliveries of controlled drugs when they arrive to fulfil legislative requirements. 41.42. Receive and check goods. (Manual handling and sometimes heavy lifting involved). 42.43. Safely store goods in the appropriate areas of the pharmacy. 43.44. Ensure that all unlicensed medicines received are quality assured before distribution
TERMS AND CONDITIONS Salary Scale : Year 1 70% Top of Band 4 Year 2 75% Top of Band 4 Contract : Fixed term for one year. Reviewed with a view to renewal and continuation of second year, upon successful completion of work objectives and completion of specified units in Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills QCF and college work. Hours of work : 37.5 hours per week (Inclusive of hours worked as part of late duty and weekend shifts) (9am-5pm with 45 minutes lunch break). Saturday and Sunday shifts: Worked as part of contracted hours on a rotational basis. Late duties: Worked as part of contracted hours on a rotational basis. Bank Holidays: Covered as part of Bank Holiday rota. Paid in accordance with AfC remuneration.
