Hw We Calculated the Energy Savings March, 2012 In rder t determine the amunt f energy saved by prjects n the BCIT campus the energy management team must make assumptins t d the calculatins necessary t add up the savings. The gal f this dcument is t help make the savings estimates as transparent as pssible. This dcument prvides ne example calculatin (refer t Pht 2 - Cld Water Used fr Laundry) and utlines all assumptins fr the prjects presented in the SEMAC Phtgraphy Exhibit. If yu have any questins r wuld like t knw hw things were dne in mre details please d nt hesitate t cntact Andrea Linsky r Alexandre Hebert at: We hpe yu will find this dcument helpful. Cnversin t Slar Panels All f the energy savings calculated was cnverted t equivalent number f slar panels needed t prduce the same amunt f energy. Decreasing the amunt f energy imprted n BCIT campuses can be dne in tw ways: either by decreasing the amunt we use r by replacing the amunt we use by an alternative surce f n- site energy prductin (such as slar phtvltaic panels). The amunt that it csts t implement the measure in each case is prvided t help demnstrate the cst effectiveness f cnservatin vs. installatin f generating equipment such as slar phtvltaic. In BC in mst cases, it makes mre sense t reduce first and prduce secnd. Reminder f the SEMAC Pht Exhibit bjective: We hpe yu will leave the exhibit even mre excited abut reducing energy use, increasing energy efficiency, and adpting energy cnservatin behavirs than yu are abut alternative energy technlgies (and we knw that s hard t d!). Slar panels assumptins: Slar Panel Cst: Values determined frm qutes fr 100 panels installed n Burnaby campus. Cst as quted: Average f $500 per 200 W (0.2 kw) panel (purchase cst) and $500 per panel fr ther equipment (inverter, batteries, etc.) and installatin (ttal averaged per panel) fr a ttal f $1,000 per 200 W panel installed. In mst cases, price will g dwn as quantity f panels ges up. Here are the numbers we used fr the calculatins featured in this pht exhibit. We have tried t make these numbers cnservative. Between 100 and 500 panels installed in ne prject: Average f $400 per 200 W (0.2 kw) panel (purchase cst) and $400 per panel fr ther equipment (inverter, batteries, etc.) and installatin (ttal averaged per panel) fr a ttal f $800 per 200 W panel installed. Between 501 and 1,000 panels installed in ne prject: Average f $350 per 200 W (0.2 kw) panel (purchase cst) and $300 per panel fr ther equipment (inverter, batteries, etc.) and installatin (ttal averaged per panel) fr a ttal f $650 per 200 W panel installed. Between 1,001 and 1,500 panels installed din ne prject: Average f $325 per 200 W (0.2 kw) panel (purchase cst) and $275 per panel fr ther equipment (inverter, batteries, etc.) and installatin (ttal averaged per panel) fr a ttal f $600 per 200 W panel installed. All csts exclude BCIT s internal prject management. Area f ne 200 W slar panel: 1.5 m 2. Amunt f energy prduced by ne slar panel: Best alignments (annual) = Suth- facing, Tilt = Latitude Fr Burnaby, annual = 993 /kw installed r apprximately 200 /yr per 200 W panel installed. Freezer Curtains Savings calculated by BC Hydr Pwer Smart Partner calculatr. This calculatr determines the savings that BC Hydr is willing t incent; this is mst likely a cnservative estimate. All eligible items are listed here http://www.bchydr.cm/ecatalg/ but the calculatr is nly available t Pwer Smart Partners. Ttal energy savings: 170,000 /yr Ttal cst f prject: $21,000 (excluding BCIT s internal prject management cst) Equivalent number f 200 W slar panels: 850 panels $552,500, runded t $550,000. Cld Water Used Fr Laundry Assumptins Accrding t a BC Hydr and a CBC study, the fllwing are the typical British Clumbian numbers fr cleaning clthes: 121 L/lad; Average f 2 lads per week; 0.06 /L t heat ht water. On average there are 300 students at any given time in the residences. Nt all water that is used in a lad is ht. It is estimated that ne quarter f the lad is ht water; therefre 30L per lad is ht water. Measurements taken n the washing machines shwed that implementatin f the price change strategy (charging mre fr ht water than fr cld water; as ppsed t charging ne unique price fr bth) saw a change frm 40% f lads with cld water t 85% (i.e.: a 45% increase). Ttal cst f prject: $0 (excluding BCIT s internal prject management cst) Example Calculatin Laundry 30 L/lad (f ht water) 300 Students 2 lads per week 50 weeks per year 0.06 /L f ht water 85 % f students that use cld water after price change 40 % f students that use cld water befre price change 45 % increase f students using cld water Page 3 f 7

Ttal energy used t heat ht water fr laundry befre change: HtWater Lads Weeks TtalEnerg y = * Students * * * Lad Week * Student Year Energy HtWater L Lads Weeks TtalEnerg y = 30 *300Students * 2 *50 *0. 06 Lad Week * Student Year TtalEnerg y = 54, 000 Year L Energy savings: Change in water use frm 40% t 85% means an increase f 45% in students using cld water. Therefre 45% f the ttal energy used t heat water previusly is n lnger used t heat water as it is nw cld. TtalSAVED Energy = 54,000 *0.45 = 24, 300 Year year The value that was used fr further calculatins is 24,000 /year runded dwn t be cnservative. Number f panels equivalent: Using the assumptins frm the slar panel cnversin sectin abve: TtalEQUIV panels = energy saved panel utput Year panel = 24,000 200 = panels Year panel TtalEQUIV panels 120 Equivalent cst t prduce same annual amunt f n- site energy with 200 W slar panels: EQUIVpanel COST = number f panels cst per panel $ panel $ EQUIVpanel COST = 120 panels 800 = $96,000 panel Page 4 f 7

Lw Flw Shwer Heads Ttal number f shwers in student husing: 119. Sampled 30 ut f 119 shwers: average flw befre retrfit: 18.2 L/min and after retrfit: 9.2 L/min. Replacements were put in all 119 shwers. Ipss- Reid Ple frm 2008 says that the average shwer time in Canada is 7.6 minutes. On average there are 5 shwers per week per student. On average 300 students are in the residences per year at any given time. The residence is peratinal fr 50 weeks per year. Accrding t a BC Hydr and a CBC study it takes 0.06 /L t heat ht water. Assuming 50% f water saved is ht (shwer flw: 50% ht, 50% cld = warm shwer water) Cst is $15/shwer head and apprximately $800 fr labr. Ttal energy savings: 150,000 /yr Ttal cst: $2,500 (excluding BCIT s internal prject management cst) Equivalent number f 200 W slar panels: 750 panels $487,500, runded t $485,000. Smart Meters Meters were installed in each f the seven student residences buildings. All students have access t real time energy cnsumptin f their building thrugh: ems.bcit.ca Althugh the meters themselves did nt create savings they allwed BCIT t run energy saving cmpetitins between huses. Three cntests were run in residences (in 3 years). The average savings are 25,000/cntest. Savings determined frm Smart Meter readings. The csts fr the cmpetitin are equal t the prizes. Ttal energy savings: 25,000 Ttal cst: $2,500/yr (excluding BCIT s internal prject management cst) r $50,000 fr 20 years f cntest Equivalent number f 200 W slar panels: 125 panels $100,000 LED Fire Exit Signs Savings calculated by BC Hydr Pwer Smart Partner calculatr. This calculatr determines the savings that BC Hydr is willing t incent; this is mst likely a cnservative estimate. All eligible items are listed here http://www.bchydr.cm/ecatalg/ but the calculatr is nly available t Pwer Smart Partners. Ttal energy savings: 50,000 /yr Ttal cst: $12,700 (excluding BCIT s internal prject management cst) Equivalent number f 200 W slar panels: 250 panels Page 5 f 7

$200,000 Light Savers Campaign Ttal savings were calculated based n lighting lgger readings taken befre and after the cmpetitin (t measure number f hurs f unnecessary light in each building). Only ne week s data was cllected and assumptins were made in rder t btain data fr all buildings in the cmpetitin as nt all buildings had lggers installed befre the cmpetitin (they all add after). This ne week s data was extraplated ut fr a full year s wrth f hur savings. A lighting audit was perfrmed by students t determine the amunt f kw wrth f lighting within NE02 and therefre a typical BCIT trades building. The annual number f light- hurs saved has been multiplied by the assumed kw lighting lad in a Trades building t btain saved per year. Fr further infrmatin n assumptins please cntact the energy management team. The csts fr this prject were the cst f the lighting lggers and the prizes and marketing that was used fr the campaign, this funding was prvided by BC Hydr thrugh the WCA prgram. Ttal energy savings: 240,000 /yr (fr BCIT Trades shp nly) Ttal cst: $5,000 (excluding BCIT s internal prject management cst) Equivalent number f 200 W slar panels: 1,200 panels $720,000 Cndensing Bilers The riginal biler is predicted t have an efficiency f arund 70% (estimated by piping instructr). The tw new bilers have an efficiency f 92.6% each. This increase in efficiency was prprtinally applied t the heating bills fr this building which allwed us t determine ur GJ savings. The heat energy savings were cnverted frm GJ t an equivalent value in (e). The cst f the bilers is lwer than usual as the piping department managed t btain the bilers at cst and they did all f the installatin in huse as part f the curriculum. Ttal energy savings: 125,000 e/yr Ttal cst: $5,600 (excluding BCIT s internal prject management cst) Equivalent number f 200 W slar panels: 625 panels $406,250, runded t $400,000. Slar Canpy The fllwing data has been prvided by the manufacturer f the slar canpies installed n campus (in building NE- 25): The Cre Sunlighting System brings sunlight int buildings in rder t substantially reduce the need fr electric lighting and therefre reduce greenhuse gases. The system has achieved peak daily pwer savings f 50%, summer mnthly average pwer savings f 42% and annual average pwer savings f 36.5%. Page 6 f 7

In a building like NE- 25: Apprximately 150 /m 2 /yr in average Apprximately 35% f electrical lad is lighting NE- 25 area is: 2,700 m 2 Annual electrical cnsumptin f lighting system in NE- 25: 140,000 36.5% f annual electrical cnsumptin f lighting system in NE- 25 (assuming all building is equipped with slar canpy technlgy): 50,000 /yr Ttal incremental cst: unknwn Equivalent number f 200 W slar panels: 250 panels Equivalent cst t prduce same annual amunt f n- site energy with 200 W slar panels: 200,000$ Dust Extractin System This is a cmparisn between tw systems. The electricity cnsumptin f the first system was calculated using: The number f hurs f measured use during a typical week (as defined by instructrs). The maximum amunt f hrsepwer (r kw) needed in rder t meet WCB requirement. Fr a ttal f 150,000 per year. The electricity cnsumptin f the secnd (new) system was calculated using: A built in pwer meter that recrds the used by bth fans. The value after a year f regular use was 30,000. Ttal energy savings: 150,000-30,400 = 120,000 Ttal incremental cst: $ 71,000 (The cst f this prject is based n the incremental cst f upgrading this system t an energy efficient ne. Excluding BCIT s internal prject management cst) Equivalent number f 200 W slar panels: 600 panels $390,000 Page 7 f 7
