Message from the Regent As members of the American College of Healthcare Executives, we are committed to Integrity (advocating and emulating high ethical conduct in all we do), Lifelong Learning (recognizing that lifelong learning is essential to our ability to innovate and continually improve ourselves, our organizations and our profession), Leadership(leading through example and mentoring, and recognizing that caring must be a cornerstone of our professional interactions), and Diversity(advocating inclusion and embracing the differences of those with whom we work and the communities we serve). In our organization this year, it seemed as if all roads led to Leadership. For some time our levels of patient satisfaction as measured by Press Ganey had been mediocre, and our HCAHPS scores had stubbornly held at the median. We set about the business of improving the patient experience and focused on tried and true methods, such as hourly patient rounding, shift change handoff at the bedside, noise control, discharge education, pain control, and leadership rounding. Our initial results were astounding, and our HCAHPS scores shot through the roof; we congratulated ourselves on a job well done, at least we did until our scores began to falter after 3 months. Why were we having trouble sustaining high performance? The answer, we found, was in our Leadership; leadership commitment to the goal and leadership engagement. It turned out that sustaining an engaged and committed staff first required an engaged leadership, committed to their staff and willing to lead by example. We were forced to retrench, and work on our leadership first. Speaking of leadership, please join us at the ACHE breakfast on September 26 at 7:30 a.m. at the West Virginia Hospital Association s 88th Annual Meeting at the Greenbrier. Our speaker will be Sunil Sinha, MD, FACHE. Dr. Sinha is a member of the ACHE Board of Governors. We will also be recognizing two of our professions outstanding leaders recipients of this year s Senior and Early Careerist Awards. I hope to see you there! Sincerely, Glen Washington Update Your Member Profile Have you changed jobs recently? Been promoted? Moved?
