What s in the courses?

BTEC Tech Awards give students the chance discover their aptitude for a career in a particular sector and develop essential skills. Every BTEC Tech Award has the same three components: Component 1 Explore Component 2 Develop Component 3 Apply the sector knowledge, skills and best practices knowledge, skills and best practices These components build on each other to motivate your students by helping them put what they ve learned into practice and grow in confidence. What s in the courses?

Component 1 EXPLORE the sector What s in the courses? Component 2 I m finding out: what the sector is all about what it s like to work in the sector what skills I need to work in this sector.

Component 2 DEVELOP knowledge, skills and best practices Component 1 Component 3 I m looking at real-life scenarios to learn what people in the sector need so they can do their jobs effectively, including: key knowledge essential skills and behaviours how to apply these to core areas of best practice.

Component 3 APPLY knowledge, skills and best practices I m working on a task to pull together everything I ve learned, and the skills I ve developed to apply to a real-life scenario. Component 2 Go to How will assessment work?

How will assessment work?

In line with the hands-on approach of the qualifications, BTEC Tech Awards have skills-based assessments to test knowledge and understanding. Each assessment draws on real-life scenarios so students can: demonstrate the knowledge, skills and best-practice behaviours in the sector they ve developed throughout the course apply these knowledge, skills and behaviours in context. How will assessment work?

In line with DfE criteria, there is a combination of internal and external assessment for BTEC Tech Awards: practical assignments (set and marked by the school, verified by Pearson) one task-based assessment* (set and marked by Pearson). Component 1 Explore Component 2 Develop How will assessment work? Component 3 Apply

Component 1 EXPLORE Focus on: main skills and practices in the sector Internally assessed assignment* Taken throughout the course Go back to How will assessment work? Component 2 *For the BTEC Tech Award in IT, component 3 will be externally assessed.

Component 2 Focus on: main skills and practices within specific contexts in the sector Internally assessed assignment Taken throughout the course Component 1 Component 3 DEVELOP

Component 3 APPLY Focus on: skills and practices key to the sector Externally assessed task based on creating a best-practice scenario, performance or artefact* Taken near the end of the course so students can draw on everything they ve learned and apply it in context Component 2 Go to How will the courses be graded? *For the BTEC Tech Award in IT, component 3 will be internally assessed via assignments.

How will the courses be graded?

You ve told us you want BTEC Tech Awards to have specific level 1 and level 2 grading. To do this, we re keeping the Pass-Merit-Distinction grading familiar to BTEC and awarding: three grades at level 1 Pass, Merit, Distinction four grades at level 2 Pass, Merit, Distinction, Distinction*. How will the courses be graded?

How will the courses help students?

The differentiated approach to grading across level 1 and level 2 both for internal assessment and final qualification grade means you can track students achievements throughout the course and help them identify their potential next steps. We ll help this by giving guidance on progression opportunities based on BTEC Tech Award qualification grades as part of students Key Stage 4 achievements. How will the courses help students?
