15 14 ICT QUALIFICATIONS APPRENTICESHIPS Apprenticeships offer high-quality training for jobs across a range of industries and are at the heart of the skills strategy in England. With such an emphasis on Apprenticeships, if you re a training provider or college, you may experience greater demand from learners looking for alternatives to university education, as well as increased enquiries from local employers hoping to develop their Apprenticeship programmes. Employees can gain skills and qualifications as they continue to work and there s compelling statistical evidence of improved job prospects, wage increases and improved lifetime earnings for employees. Employers can take on a new starter as an apprentice or develop existing staff by enrolling them onto a programme. They could benefit from reduced staff turnover, the new ideas and innovation that apprentices bring, and often a high return on investment after the initial period of training. Who provides what on Apprenticeships? The training provider or college offers the opportunity for apprentices to develop skills and knowledge in the classroom or in workshops and can facilitate work placements with employers. The employer provides the learner with the practical experience and support to put what s been learnt to the test.

16 ICT QUALIFICATIONS 15 Apprenticeship Reform what changes are being made? The Reform programme has been set out in The Future of Apprenticeships in England: Implementation Plan, published in October The key measures aim to: Increase the quality of Apprenticeships through more rigorous testing at the end of the Apprenticeship grading Put employers in the driving seat of designing Apprenticeships so that they meet the needs of the industry Simplify Apprenticeships by replacing complex frameworks with standards written by employers. How will Reform happen? Changes to Apprenticeships will be performed by Trailblazers, which are groups of employers working together to design new Apprenticeship standards for occupations in their sectors. Apprenticeships are a route to a mastery of an occupation and preparation for life. Here at OCR, we re putting learning at the heart of Apprenticeships as we help to shape them. The recommendations from the Reform programme are putting employers at the forefront of the Apprenticeship changes through Trailblazer projects. To prepare for the Reform, we re championing Apprenticeships with employers by identifying partnerships with Trailblazer groups for various sectors in the relevant roll out phases. As part of our Digital IT strategy we re developing new Trailblazer standards. From the first phase, we are launching two Apprenticeship standards in 2016 at Level 4 in Network Engineer and Software Developer, where we re pleased to announce the Knowledge entry windows for the Formative parts of the Apprenticeship standard.

17 16 ICT QUALIFICATIONS Look out for future Digital Apprenticeship standards Further IT Trailblazer standards will be released as they become available as part of Government implementation via the Tech Partnership. The implementation of Standard phases are spread until 2017; the current Apprenticeship frameworks will be used until all of the Digital standards are available. It s straightforward to offer our Apprenticeships and we currently offer all the required components for these Apprenticeship frameworks: Creative and Digital Media Level 3 IT, Software, Web and Telecoms Professionals (Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4) IT Applications Specialist (Level 2 and Level 3).
