How to Add an Image to Moodle A Step-by-Step Guide Images can be added to a number of different places on a Moodle page: 1. A Central Box (aka. Topic Box) heading 2. A Label 3. An HTML block (a box that can be added to the sides of the page) 4. A Forum post The screenshot below shows what the above looks like on a page: 1. This is an image added as a heading it is edited by clicking on the pencil underneath. 4. News Forum posts can have images added to them. 2. This is an image added as a label these icons give move/editing options. 3. Here s an image in an HTML block. Because there are slightly different instructions for each of these multiple options for places to add images, these instructions are split into 4 parts, starting on the next page with adding images to central boxes.

1. Adding Images to Central Box Headings Here s how to add an image to the heading of a rectangular central box: 1. Click on the Turn Editing On button in the top right hand corner of your page. 2. Scroll to the Topic Box you want to add an image to (it could be the top one, or one of the numbered boxes underneath it). This demo will add one to the top box. Click on the pencil to edit the box. 3. The screen will change to show an editor for the contents of the box. To add a picture to the box, click on the Insert Image button that s the one that looks a bit like a painting of a tree.

4. An Insert/edit Image box will pop up. If you are taking an image straight from a Google Image Search, you can paste the Image URL straight into the box and skip to instruction 8. If the image is saved on your computer, click on Find or upload an image. 5. You will be taken to the File Picker box. Make sure Upload a File is highlighted on the left hand side and click the Browse button to search for your image. 6. When you have found your file, click Open, then Upload this file.

7. The Insert/edit an image box should now be showing a preview of your image. The Appearance and Advanced tabs on this screen give many more options for your image (but you can ignore them at this stage). 8. Click on Insert to continue. A box may pop up here click Continue. 9. You will be taken back to the Adding a Label screen. Here you can change the size and alignment (left/centre/right justify), of your image. Click on the image to change the size. 10. Click on Save and return to course. You should see your image in the box you chose back in Step 2. Excellent!

2. Adding Images as Labels If you add an image to a rectangular central box as a Label you can move it to any position within the box it does not just have to be added as a heading. Here s how to add an image to a Label: 1. Click on the Turn Editing On button in the top right hand corner of your page. 2. In the numbered central box that you want to add the file, Click on the "Add a resource..." box and select "Label". 3. The screen will change. On the next page, a box called Adding a Label will pop up. Click on the Insert/edit Image button that s the one that looks a bit like a painting of a tree.

You re done!

3. Adding Images to an HTML block You add an image to an HTML block and move it to any position on the left or right hand side of the page. Here s how to do it: 1. Click on the Turn Editing On button in the top right hand corner of your page. 2. At the bottom of the right hand column, a box will appear called Add a Block. Click on where it says Add and choose HTML. 3. Your block will appear just above the Add a block box. It is called (new HTML box). Now click on the pencil in the middle of it.

4. You will be taken to a page called Configuring a (new HTML block) block. You can type in a title in the Block Title box (If you don t, your block will just have an image and no title). Click on the Insert/edit Image button that s the one that looks like a painting of a tree. 5. An Insert/edit Image box will pop up. If you are taking an image straight from a Google Image Search, you can paste the Image URL straight into the box and skip to instruction 8. If the image is saved on your computer, click on Find or upload an image.

6. You will be taken to the File Picker box. Make sure Upload a File is highlighted on the left hand side and click the Browse button to search for your image. 7. When you have found your file, click Open, then Upload this file. 8. The Insert/edit an image box should now be showing a preview of your image. The Appearance and Advanced tabs on this screen give many more options for your image (but you can ignore them at this stage). 9. Click on Insert to continue. A box may pop up here click Continue.

10. You will be taken back to the Configuring a (new HTML block) block screen. Here you can change the size and alignment (left/centre/right justify), of your image. Click on the image to change the size. 11. Click on Save and return to course. You should see your image in the HTML block. Congrats!

4. Adding Images to a Forum Post You can add an image to a Forum post if you wish. 1. Start a Forum Discussion by clicking on your News Forum and clicking the Add a new topic button. You will see this page: 2. Scroll down to Attachment and click the Add button to add your image as an attachment. Your image will be tagged on to the end of your post. 3. Click on Post to Forum and you re done. Brilliant! Problems, questions queries? Email wa@burnside.school.nz.
