Accessing Non-Employee VPN portal 1. From a computer on the Internet, access the following site: a. If you are using the Guest Network in the US, you must use http://avpn1.npv.gm.com b. You cannot connect to the VPN from an internal GM network connection North America: http://avpn1.npv.gm.com or http://avpn2.npv.gm.com China: http://avpn3.npv.gm.com or http://avpn4.npv.gm.com Europe: http://avpn6.npv.gm.com 2. Select the login group and click Next a. SSL Proxie (default group recommended) i. Use this option if you are planning to install the Aventail Connect client (required for 64-bit systems) b. SSL Tunnel (32-bit systems ONLY) i. Use this option when using client based applications, such as Lotus Notes ii. DO NOT use this option if you are planning to install the Aventail Connect client c. GM Employees i. This group can only be used by GM employees who have received proper approval ii. This group functions similar to SSL Tunnel and cannot be used if logging in through the web from a 64-bit system 1
3. Enter your credentials (GMID and password) on the login page a. Passwords are managed through https://gmid.gm.com 4. Install and Run all Aventail components as prompted a. If you skip or cancel the installation of any component during login, the process will fail resulting in an error message 2
b. The Aventail Cache Control applet will install. This window must stay open in the background. 5. The following page will be displayed once you have been logged into Aventail Workplace a. A successful connection will be indicated by the Access status i. SSL Proxy connection: Access: Web and Client/Server ii. SSL Tunnel connection: Access: Full network Access SSL Proxie mode SSL Tunnel mode 6. The Zone is designated based on your system architecture a. Default + Patch Check indicates that you are running a 32-bit system b. GPLD No ACC indicates that you are running a 64-bit system 7. If you are using a 32-bit system, you are now connected to the VPN 3
a. To connect to resources within the GM network, open up a new browser window or tab and key in the URL or IP addresses of the of the site you are trying to reach, or launch the client application (e.g. Lotus Notes; SAP GUI) b. NOTE: closing this window or navigating away from the connection page will end the VPN session 8. Click the Install Connect Tunnel link to install the Aventail Connect client a. This step is optional for users running a 32-bit system, but is required for 64-bit systems. This step can only be performed if you logged in through the SSL Proxie group b. After the client has been installed, close the browser window (which will end the VPN sessions), and launch Aventail VPN Connection from the shortcut on the desktop 9. To disconnect i. You will use the same GMID and password to connect to the VPN through the client. Aventail will minimize to the system tray when you are connected, at which point you can open a browser window or client application and navigate to to your GM resources a. From the Aventail Workplace (browser) session, click logout and close the window b. From the Aventail client, right click on the Aventail icon (from the desktop or system tray) and click Disconnect 3. Proxy issue Proceed with these instructions if you are logged in to the VPN but cannot access any resources 1. Open your LAN Settings this can be done through Internet Explorer (IE) or the Control Panel a. IE: go to Tools>Internet Options>Connections(tab)>LAN Settings b. Control Panel: open Internet Options>Connections(tab)>LAN Settings 2. Disable/uncheck ALL options a. NOTE: some local network connections may require you to have one of proxy options in your LAN Settings enabled in order to reach the internet. In this case, you can leave either the Use automatic configuration script or the Proxy Server option enabled, however, if it is determined that these setting are in conflict with VPN connection, your local network support may need to help fix the issue b. The Automatically detect settings option should never be used with the Aventail VPN service c. If you are using Firefox, these settings are managed separately from the above and can be changed under Options>Advanced>Network>Settings 4
3. Click OK a. If connected through Aventail client, double-click Aventail VPN Connection (on the Connections tab in your internet options) and disabled/uncheck ALL options 4. If this does not resolve the issue a. Disconnect from Aventail b. Repeat steps 1 3 c. Log back into the VPN Installation issues Proceed with these instructions if you are having trouble with the initial install, trouble connecting or encounter any issues that may require reinstallation Browser Settings 1. Click the following link to ensure the Java is up to date and working: http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp a. If java is broken or not up to date, reinstall or update from http://www.java.com 2. Verify that your Security settings (for the Internet zone ) are set to Medium (NOT medium-high). This can be adjusted in IE under Tools>Internet Options>Security(tab)>Internet(zone)>Default levels 3. Go to tools>internet Options>Connections(tab)>LAN Settings and make sure NONE of the boxes are checked (the only exception is if a specific proxy is required in order to reach the external/public internet from you current network location). Automatically Detect Settings should never be used with Aventail a. If using Firefox, These settings can be changed under Options>Advanced>Network>Settings Installation/reinstallation Instructions 1. Reboot your PC/workstation 2. Download AAMCleaner.zip by going to http://software.sonicwall.com/aventail/kb/8635/aamcleaner.zip a. Extract and run the.exe file b. This is a utility that will remove existing Aventail files and allow for a clean install 3. Go to the respective VPN site for your region a. North America: http://avpn1.npv.gm.com or http://avpn2.npv.gm.com b. China: http://avpn3.npv.gm.com or http://avpn4.npv.gm.com c. Europe: https://avpn6.npv.gm.com 4. Select SSL Proxie from the drop down menu, then click next 5. Enter your GMID and password 6. Install and Run all Aventail components as prompted 7. Once logged into the VPN, you should see the link install connect tunnel a. Click on the install link to add the Aventail client shortcut to your desktop 5
8. After the client has installed, you can log out of the VPN web sessions, then log back in through the Aventail VPN Connection shortcut on the desktop The process to remove/reinstall Aventail is to ensure any related files are properly installed and not corrupted. This may not always be necessary but should save time in the troubleshooting process. 6
