Before You Get Started This guide contains pictures and instructions to step you through the process of connecting to the Collier County Public School network. If you have not received a user id and a password or have any problems setting up your remote access account please contact the District Webmaster at (239) 377-0452 or send an email to storkmi@collier.k12.fl.us. IMPORTANT NOTES: The remote computer you are going to create the VPN connection on MUST be able to access the Internet. The VPN connection ONLY connects you to the Collier County Public School District s intranet network. If you still need access to your home directory files you will need to log into Novell AFTER you have set up this VPN connection and successfully connected. Contact your school s system support technician for more information. The school district cannot troubleshoot home networks, including security settings, ISP issues or router configuration. Please contact your Internet Service Provider or your router manufacturer for assistance troubleshooting these issues. Step by Step Instructions 1. Turn on your computer and log in if necessary. Click on the Start menu and Click on the Control Panel. See Figure 1
2. Click on View network status and tasks. See Figure 2 FIGURE 2 Select Properties from the My Network Places menu. 3. This should have opened up the Network and Sharing Center Window. Look for the text Set up a new connection or network in the window. When you find it click on it. See Figure 3 4. You should now see the Setup a connection or network screen. See Figure 4

5. After selecting Connect to a workplace, click on the next button. You will see a selection screen, choose Use my Internet connection (VPN). See Figure 5 FIGURE 5 Select Use my Internet connection (VPN).
6. Type in vpn.collier.k12.fl.us for the Internet address. Then type in the name of the connection CCPS VPN for the Destination Name. See Figure 6 FIGURE 6 TYPE IN THE FOLLOWING FIELDS ABOVE AND CLICK THE Next button.
7. Next type in your type in the user id and password that were sent to your email address. Then click on the Connect button. The next dialog box will require you to skip, see next step below. See Figure 7 FIGURE 7 Type in your username and password from the email you received. Then click Connect. On the next dialog box you will need to click Skip, read step below.
8. You must make changes to the connection for it to work. Click on the Skip Button. If you do not you will still end up at the error screen as in Figure 9. See Figure 8 FIGURE 8 Click on the Skip Button.
9. Click on Set up the connection anyway to save the settings. See Figure 9 FIGURE 9 Click on Setup the connection anyway 10. The connection is now setup and saved but one more change must be made to connect. Find My Network Places, located on the Desktop, and right click on it. See Figure 10
Scroll down to the bottom of the menu that popped up and click on Properties. See Figure 10 FIGURE 10 Select Properties from the Network Places menu. 11. This should have opened up the Network Connections Window. Look for the text Manage network connections in the window. When you find it click on it. 12. This should open the Network Connections. Then right click on the new connection you just made CCPS VPN and select Properties. See figure 13 FIGURE 13 Right click on CCPS VPN and select Properties. 13. The CCPS VPN Properties window will pop up. Click on Security tab at the top of the window to show the settings. Select the Advanced (custom settings) option bubble it is the empty circle next the text Advanced. Then click on the Settings button to the right of the text. See figure 14.

From the Data encryption drop box, select the Optional encryption (connect even if no encryption). Then click the checkbox next to Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocal (CHAP). Figure 15. Then Click on the Ok Button to accept changes and you will be prompted by a dialog box. Click Yes.
Figure 15. Select Optional Encryption and then check the Challenge Handshake checkbox. Then select OK and then select Yes from the dialog box that pops up. 15. That completes the settings that need to be changed. Click on the OK button on the properties dialog to save everything. See figure 16.
Figure 16. Click the OK button. 16. Next we need to place a shortcut on the Desktop. The network connections window should still be open, if not follow steps 10 and 11. From the network connections window, right click on CCPS VPN and select Create Shortcut. Select the Yes button from the dialog box that pops up. See figure 17.Then close the Network Connections window, or go to your desktop. See figure 18.
Figure 17. Right click CCPS VPN and select Create Shortcut Figure 18. CCPS VPN Shortcut on Desktop. 17. Double click the CCPS VPN Shortcut. The Connect window will appear. Type in your username and password from the email you received. Click on the Connect button to connect. See figure 19.
Figure 19. Type in your username and password from the VPN email you received. 18. If there are no conflicts with your firewall / router, you will connect successfully. If you do not connect, a dialog box will appear. To verify your connection move your mouse on top of the Network Connection icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen. A box will pop up showing the networks you are connected to, including CCPS VPN. See figure 20. Figure 20. Move mouse over the network Icon to reveal your connections. 19.
