2 Introduction T h e P u litz e r P riz e is a rg u a b ly o n e o f o u r n a tio n 's m o s t p re s tig io u s a n d c o v e te d h o n o rs a w a rd e d a n n u a lly in th e fie ld o f m u sic. T h e fo rty -tw o m u sic ia n s w h o h a v e re c e iv e d th e P u litz e r P riz e in M u sic d u rin g its first fifty y ears o f e x iste n c e (1 9 4 3-1 9 9 2 ) fo rm a c o lle c tiv e b o d y re p re se n tin g m a n y o f A m e ric a 's m o st h ig h ly re g a rd e d tw e n tie th c e n tu ry c o m p o se rs.
