COMPETITION CATEGORIES: Miss Gardendale Magnolia Festival Outstanding Teen is judged as follows: Personal Interview - 35% Talent - 35% Lifestyle/Fitness - 10% Evening Gown - 15% On Stage Question - 5% INTERVIEW COMPETITION 35%: Wardrobe for your interview should be business attire and appropriate shoes. Be careful of the color you select. You will be very close to the judges. Check your make-up so that it is natural and attractive. Keep in mind The All American Woman Look. This is not a dress-up playtime. No cocktail suits are allowed. Remember you are applying for a job! Look where a local preliminary got Deidre Downs-she eventually got the job of Miss America. Each contestant will have a 5-minute interview with the judges. During this time, you will have an opportunity to talk about your interests, future plans, goals, etc.. The judges will have a copy of your interview sheet. They will also be noting your vocabulary, voice, general knowledge, personal appearance and how you handle yourself in a one-to-one basis. If you are asked something that you do not know, say so. Be yourself! Don t be fake! The time starts at the time you enter the room. You will stand at a podium across from the judges and briefly introduce yourself with name and number to judges. The interview will follow and will last until the 4 minute 15 second point in the timing process. At the 4:15 mark, you will be asked if there are any additional issues on which you would like to comment. This segment will only allow for un-discussed issues. Additional questions may follow from the judges. If you have nothing more to discuss, the interview ends. Interviews may possibly be conducted on the Friday night(april 8, 2010) before the pageant. TALENT COMPETITION- 35%: You must perform your talent within a 2 minute maximum time limit. There will be absolutely no exceptions to this ruling. The production staff will make all final decisions regarding talent presentations. Your talent will be timed during production practice. Your talent presentation must be live; the use of film is prohibited. There will be no duplication of talent presentations during the entire pageant. Examples: Two contestants singing the same song. Two contestants dancing to the same song, etc.. If your music selection is a duplication, the pageant staff will immediately notify you. Remember to be smart-work on at least two pieces so you can be prepared. Talent selections will be approved on a first come, first approved basis. A contestant who submits all of her paperwork in a correct and timely manner is considered approved and her talent choice is approved accordingly. If you are performing a medley, each song within that medley must be listed on your application.

Please be specific on your application regarding your talent. The form asks, what type of talent will you present? Please be specific. Don t just put Singing or Dancing. State the title of the song and pertinent information. Contestants will be allowed only one (1) run through of their talent presentation(hopefully right after your interview on Friday night before pageant.). If your talent requires accompaniment, you must provide us with a CD or cassette tape. Please make sure the music is clearly marked with your name and name of the musical piece. Music will be returned in your packet after the pageant. A piano will be made available. Talent costumes should be in good taste. Costumes with ornaments, beads or anything that would drop on the stage should be avoided. This may be dangerous for yourself and other contestants. ABSOLUTELY NO PROPS WILL BE PERMITTED UNLESS THEY ARE ESSENTIAL TO YOUR ACT. The Pageant is not responsible for lost items or belongings left behind after the pageant and they will not be returned to you. It is the contestant s responsibility to keep up with her things. Coaches, friends or family members may not at any time assist you during the pageant! The pageant production staff will be there to help you in any way we can. FITNESS COMPETITION-10%: All Outstanding teen Contestant s will be required to do a fitness routine. Required attire will be black soffee shorts, a white t-shirt, and tennis shoes and socks. Please be sure to wear appropriate undergarments(especially under the white t-shirt) because the lights are bright on the stage. The teen contestants will learn this fitness routine as a group before the pageant. Evening Wear Competition-15%: Traditionally, evening wear has consisted of a long gown. For your information, most contestants choose to wear long gowns. However, the Miss Alabama Pageant guidelines define evening wear choices as: 1. After-five apparel of any length (Max. 4 inches above the knee) 2. Long gowns 3. Evening Pants, Dresses, or Cocktail Clothes (No Suits) We want you to feel good and comfortable. The judges are instructed to judge you on Overall First Impression ; Beauty and Sense of Attractiveness; Sense of Confidence; Personality and Stage Presence; Technique (Walk, Posture, Carriage and Grace); and Appropriateness of Evening Wear. This counts for 20% of overall judging.

Please keep in mind these girls are competing for the title of Miss Gardendale Magnolia Festival Outstanding Teen, not the title of Miss Gardendale Magnolia Festival. Please choose age appropriate formal wear. On Stage Question-5%: Miss Gardendale Magnolia Festival, Miss Gardendale Magnolia Festival Outstanding Teen, Miss Alabama and Miss America now spend most of their hours addressing groups both large and small. As an ambassador of the Miss Alabama program, your ability to speak is critical. Contestants will be required to answer one on stage question. The question will be a general type question that will be drawn from a bowl. Make sure to watch the news, read the paper and be on top of current events. This portion of the competition counts as 5% of your overall score. Smile-show your personality and energy! Project and be natural! Enjoy yourself!
