A new version of desktop ANYWHERE has been developed to offer high performance access to Northumbria IT facilities from a wide range of devices which have a connection to the Internet including smartphones, tablets and laptops. It has a secure connection, preventing your password and other data from being seen across the network. Using this route you can access: What you need Your files on the U Drive Standard desktop applications Electronic Information Sources Access to local resources whilst using the Staff or Student Desktop e.g. Drives and Printers (This facility is not supported on tablets with Windows RT) Internet Connection Citrix Receiver For clientless access the minimum web browsers are Internet Explorer 10, Safari 6, Google Chrome 30 or Mozilla Firefox 24 If you are using desktop ANYWHERE for the first time, you will need to download the Citrix Receiver. This is a small piece of software which makes the connection to desktop ANYWHERE and takes very little time to install. The Citrix Receiver will stay on your device, so you should not have to install it again. Screen Quality Note: If you are using a device where the Citrix Receiver cannot be installed (Internet Café) you will be able to access the basic service as long as you have access to an HTML5 compatible web browser (but full functionality will not be available) see below. We recommend that you set your screen to 32 bit Windows 7 or Vista: Right-click on your desktop > Select Personalise > Display (Settings) 1
Access without the Citrix Receiver using an HTML5 Browser For the most efficient connection we recommend that you download the Citrix Receiver. However, if this is not possible, such as in an internet café, you can make a basic connection via a higher level web browser. Functionality may be limited in this view, such as access to your local printers. The minimum web browsers for this feature are Internet Explorer 10, Safari 6, Google Chrome 30, Mozilla Firefox 24. Open your browser and go to http://gateway.northumbria.ac.uk Login with your Northumbria username and password Getting Started To use desktop ANYWHERE you will need to: Connect to the Internet Download the Citrix Receiver Set up the Citrix Receiver Logon with your Northumbria username and password 1 Connect to the Internet On Campus: Connect to the appropriate WiFi network: NU Smartphone: For Smartphone, iphone, ipad, ipod Touch NU Simply Web : For laptops and tablets Using WiFi The first time you use NU Smartphone or NU Simply Web you will need to check that the settings on your device are configured correctly. If you already have Citrix Receiver on your device go to Section 3 to continue with the set up - Page7 of this guide. Follow the instructions for your device and then continue with Section 3. Windows 8.1, 8, 7, Vista & XP To download the Citrix Receiver for Windows go to www.citrix.com/clients Select Receiver for Windows Select Receiver for Windows Select Receiver for Windows version (the most appropriate client will be offered to you) Select Download Receiver for Windows Accept the License Agreement Click Continue Select to Run the Receiver installation. The exact method will depend on your browser: o Internet Explorer will provide a Run option o Firefox and Chrome will only allow the file to be downloaded and you will need to run it from the downloads list. Note for Windows Vista/7/8: If this prompt (or similar) appears the Citrix Receiver has detected that you have Admin Rights and will install the Receiver for all users of your computer. If this prompt does not appear, the Receiver will only install under your username. If necessary, click Yes Click Install The Receiver should now install and you should not receive any further installation prompts. At the end of the install, you may be prompted to Add Account. For details go to the Set up the Citrix Receiver section further on in this guide (Page 7). 4
Mac OS X Mavericks, 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 (32- and 64-bit) To download the Citrix Receiver for MAC go to www.citrix.com/clients Select Receiver for MAC Select Receiver for MAC Select Receiver for MAC version (the most up to date client will be offered to you) Select Download Once the Receiver is downloaded, if the installation does not start automatically open the Receiver installer from the download list i.e. Select Install Citrix Receiver Follow the on screen prompts until you receive confirmation that the installation was successful. Set up the Citrix Receiver > go to Section 3 - Page7 of this guide Windows RT Windows RT only supports the version of Citrix Receiver available from the Windows Store. Open Search, Select Store Type Citrix and click Citrix Receiver in the results Click Install Useful Touch Gestures for Windows RT The Receiver installation should complete after a few moments Set up the Citrix Receiver > go to Section 3 - Page7 of this guide. 5
Ubuntu - v12.04.3 The following guidelines were written for Ubuntu 12.04.3, Citrix Receiver 13 and Firefox 25. Note: To install and configure the Citrix Receiver you will need root privilege (login as root) or be able to run applications with root privilege (sudo). Please ensure that your system has all the latest updates installed by using the Update Manager or type sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade in a terminal window. To download the Citrix Receiver go to www.citrix.com/clients Select Receiver for Linux Receiver for Linux Receiver for Linux version Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select For 32-bit Systems or For 64-bit Systems depending on the version of Ubuntu you have installed Click on Download for the.deb file. Click Download Now When prompted select to Open with Ubuntu Software Centre Click Install and follow the prompts to install the client If you want to access any USB devices from Citrix, install the USB Support Package in the same way. Note: 64-bit users may also have to install libxerces (sudo apt-get-install libxerces) Install the Certificate The Linux Citrix client does not by default trust the certificate used by desktop ANYWHERE. Download the root certificate from our downloads site at www.northumbria.ac.uk/downloads Extract the Certificate (GlobalSignDomainSSLIntermediate G2.crt) and copy it as a root user to /opt/citrix/icaclient/keystore/cacerts. Launch the Citrix Receiver and Connect to desktop ANYWHERE Open your browser and go to https://gateway.northumbria.ac.uk Login with your Northumbria username and password. Click on the desktop icon and wait for the Desktop to open. Note: This can sometimes take up to 2 minutes, so be patient or you will have multiple desktops open. 6
Other Other devices can be used to access desktop ANYWHERE using the Citrix Receiver. These include: Blackberry Playbook Install the Citrix Receiver from the Blackberry App World Google Chromebook Install the Citrix Receiver from the Chrome Web Store 3 Set up the Citrix Receiver 1 Open the Citrix Receiver. Depending on your device the Citrix Receiver link may be in your Start Menu, Start Screen (Windows 8) or Finder/Applications (Mac OSX). 2 Add Account Enter Northumbria Address The first time you access you should be asked for a work email or server address. If you already have Citrix Receiver on your device, navigate to add a New Account Enter the your Northumbria email address Select Next Note: If you receive a certificate warning, follow the on screen instructions to continue or alternatively, download the latest version of the Citrix Receiver available via www.northumbria.ac.uk/downloads. 3 Logon with your Northumbria Username and Password You should be prompted for your University credentials. Most devices (excluding ipads and Androids) require your username to be entered in the following format: e.g unn\w9912345: Note for ipads and Android Enter your Northumbria username, domain and password as shown Click or tap on the Log On If prompted, click Yes to allow the Citrix Receiver to make changes to your device An on screen notice will confirm that your account has been added successfully. Select Yes. Click or tap Finish 7
4 Connect to desktop ANYWHERE Select the appropriate icon for Staff and Students: If the icon does not appear or you require another application: o Select This will show the applications you are entitled to launch. o Single click or tap on the required icon to add it to your Favourites Some versions of the Receiver will launch the desktop as soon as you add it to your Favourites. If not, return to your Favourites/applications by clicking/tapping anywhere within the Receiver away from the Add Applications list. o Now you have added your favourites, single click/tap the appropriate icon to launch desktop ANYWHERE.
