Sponsored by: 2015-2016 brings Port Discovery right to your classroom! Programs are available for Pre School through 5th grade. All programs support Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards. Programs may be booked Monday through Friday, 10am to 3pm. Fees vary by program. Please refer to the specific program descriptions for more information. Assembly and classroom programs are available. Assembly Programs Do you have a large group of students and want to ensure they all get to experience the interactive learning of Port Discovery s programs? An assembly program might be the best option for your students! Whack-a-BOOM Orchestra Whack-a-BOOM Orchestra is a hands-on, large group play experience for schools. Drawing on music from a collection of popular children s songs and other original material, students will become an orchestra of colored, musical tubes. (This program is not available on Fridays.) Grades: 3rd -5th Group Size: 100 maximum Fee: $400 (Book two of same program on the same day for $700) World Drum The drum has been found in almost every culture throughout human history. It ties us together as a global community. The World Drum is an assembly concert performance presented by Port Discovery Performing and Teaching Artist, Daveed Korup. His motto: The world is a giant drum just waiting to be played, is a perfect metaphor for the world we live in today. (This program is not available on Fridays.) Grades: PreK-5th Group Size: 250 max Fee: $400 (Book two of same program on the same day for $700) 2

Classroom Programs Performing and Visual Arts Fun with Haikus A wild and zany new game show approach to interactive story and poetry making, Fun with Haikus encourages students to tap into their creative genius. A Port Discovery teaching artist will take students on a fantastic voyage of discovery and invention, while exploring the dynamics of spoken and written language. Grades: 3rd-5th Fee: $200 (SPECIAL! Book three of the same program on the same day for $500) The Kamishibai Show (Japanese Paper Drama) Join the Kamishibai Man on a storytelling adventure. Children will experience stories set to familiar songs and original Kamishibai stories created by school children. From ancient Japan, Kamishibai can now be found around the world. Grades: PreK-2nd Fee: $200 (SPECIAL! Book three of the same program on the same day for $500) Finland: All About the Print In this Textiles Around the World session, children will discover a Finnish method of creating textiles with block printing. They will play a game that introduces Marimekko prints and learn a fantastical Finnish fairytale. Each student will learn firsthand how to make a block print and actually ink it onto fabric. Grades: 1st-3rd Fee: $200 (SPECIAL! Book three of the same program on the same day for $500) France: Fashionable Ombre In this Textiles Around the World session, children will travel to the country of France. They will learn about the beautiful capital of Paris, listen to a reading of a book about the city, and be tested to see how much they know about color shades and values. In addition, participants will get to create their own ombre colored painting using paper marbling techniques. Grades: 1st-3rd Fee: $300 (SPECIAL! Classroom Programs STEM Electrical Circuits This electrifying program introduces young scientists to the power of electricity. Students will learn about how electricity is generated, how it travels, and how it is used. Then, students will use teamwork to create electrical circuits that turn on light bulbs, play music, and more! Grades: 2nd-5th Fee: $200 (Book three of the same program on the same day for $500) The Perfect Slime Budding young engineers can don their lab coats and goggles while creating the perfect slime. Every day, engineers experiment with different chemicals to design new products, or make existing ones better. Children work to perfect Port Discovery s slime formula through creative experimentation. Grades: 2nd-5th Fee: $300 (Book three of the same program on the same day for $800) Animal Adaptations Utilizing the engaging book, What Do You Do When Something Wants to Eat You? by Steve Jenkins, students learn about different types of adaptations and their evolutionary importance. Each child will design and create a fish adapted for a specific habitat. Grades: K- 4th Fee: $200 (Book three of the same program on the same day for $500) 4 Owl Pellet Dissection In this EcoKids session, children learn about food chains through interactive games and the importance of predators and prey in an ecosystem. Then, the diet of a barn owl is studied by dissecting an owl pellet and identifying animal bones. Grades: K- 4th Fee: $300 (Book three of the same program on the same day for $800)

Series Programs Performing and Visual Arts Series programs expand upon student learning by bringing five classroom programs to your students. Each session builds on the last, giving students an in-depth experience! Drum Games Series Presented by Port Discovery Performing and Teaching Artist, Daveed Korup, Drum Games is a collection of hands-on, music play experiences that combine language and math, with group ensemble activities. (This program is not available on Fridays.) Grades: PreK-5th Textiles around the World Series An interactive approach to Visual Arts and Culture, this new program offers participants an experience filled with science-based experimentation, art making, games, stories, and a world map to spark a curiosity and understand of diverse cultures around the world. Throughout the program, students will participate in sessions that tie each country to a universal art form: textiles. Participants will have an opportunity to create his/her variation of textile art. Grades: 1st-3rd 5

Series Programs STEM Everyday Engineers Series Engineers create everything that we use every day, from our cell phones, to our school buildings, to our cars. In this series, students will explore five types of engineers: civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical, and aerospace. While learning about the Engineering Design Process, they will build catapults, create electrical circuits, launch a satellite to space, perfect a slime formula, and more! Grades: 2nd-5th EcoKids! Series During Ecokids, children are given the opportunity to explore the world around them, how it works, and how it relates to them through hand-on projects, games, and books. Highlights include creating a terrarium and dissecting an owl pellet! Grades: K-4th The lessons were engaging and fun for the students and the adults.
