01 POPULATION AND DEMOGRAPHY Lisbon is the capital city of a country with 10.5 million inhabitants and the Hub of a metropolitan region with 2.8 million inhabitants. Daily, the number of the city users rises from its 547 thousand residents to 925 thousand persons, due to the commuting movements (house-work and house-school). After 5 decades of population decrease, that reached 257 thousand inhabitants (1/3 of the initial population), Lisbon registered the stabilization of its population (slowing down the rhythm of demographic decrease, when comparing to the previous decades, with a record of 3% population decay in the last decade), simultaneously with the growth of the number of families and with the growth of young residents rate. 3
