MEDITERRANEO/MASSIMO D AZEGLIO/ATLANTICO/NORD Maurizio Bettoja, a wine merchant from Northern Italy, settled in Rome in 1875. Soon after he opened the Massimo d Azeglio restaurant above his wine cellars on the via Cavour. By 1878, under the direction of his son Angelo, the restaurant had grown into the Massimo d Azeglio Hotel. Today, the cellars, still lined with thousands of bottles of personally selected wines, are the scene of delightful candlelit parties. The restaurant, as popular as ever for its delectable authentic Italian cuisine, draws patrons from all over Rome. In 1928 Angelo s son Maurizio, and father of today s Angelo, the fourth generation president, became president. By that time two hotels across the via Cavour had been added to the firm, the Atlantico, and the adjoining Mediterraneo, flagship of the chain, a monument of the Italian Déco style. In 1935, the Nord Nuova Roma was built, a half block away on the via Amendola. Today the Bettoja Hotels are one of the few family-owned groups in Italy with a capacity of about 661 rooms, ranging from deluxe penthouse suites in the superior first class Mediterraneo, to standard singles in the three star Nord. The Bettoja tradition of good food and service has continued through the five generations. Many of the present staff are second, third, and even fourth generation. The concierges have earned a reputation for courtesy and knowledge. This is an exceptional group of hotels which offers a variety of accommodations, reasonably priced, and conveniently located. They are just a block away from the railroad, airline train terminal, public transport hub, and metro. The Bettoja Hotels in Rome are within walking distance of the most important archeological sites, such as the Forum and Colosseum, of the Opera House, Roman Archeological Museum, the via Veneto, Spanish Steps.

The Hotel Mediterraneo is one of the most notable, handsome, and well preserved examples of Italian Art Déco in Rome. Built between 1938 and 1942-44 by architect and designer Mario Loreti, it was meant for the 1942 World Fair - the E42, whose fairgrounds were to be the showpiece of the Fascist Régime, and its rebuilding was declared of national importance and part of the E42 building plan: it was not only allowed to exceed the height allowed by the zoning laws (it still is the highest building in the center of Rome), but other buildings and areas were expropriated to allow its ROME expansion. The Mediterraneo was to host the E42 official guests, and the Crown Prince was to be present at the opening; but, as war swept across Italy, its first guests were the U.S. officers, with Irving Berlin and his famous show This is the army The architecture, furniture, and decorations of the Mediterraneo have been included in exhibitions and books on the Italian Art Déco style. Those who appreciate the arts of the 30s and 40s will find one of its best preserved examples of interiors in the high style of the period.
