2 Welcome to Rome Welcome to Rome! With this presentation we are going to describe some of the most important monuments in Rome, most of which we are going to visit together. Enjoy!
3 These are some of the main important monuments in Rome that we are going to visit together. The Colosseum Arch of Constantine The Roman Forum Piazza Venezia Piazza del popolo Piazza Barberini Villa Borghese The Spanish Steps & the Barcaccia Fountain The Trevi Fountain The Pantheon The Church of St. Louis of the French Piazza Navona ST. Peter s Square Hadrian s Villa Villa d Este
4 The Colosseum The Colosseum is an amphiteatre in the center of Rome and the largest amphitheatre in the world. It was built under the Emperor Vespasian in 70 AD. It is the symbol of ancient and modern Rome.
5 The Arch of Constantine The Arch of Constantine is a triumphal arch in Rome located near the Colosseum and erected in 312 AD by Constantine I.
6 The Roman Forum Near the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine we can admire the Roman Forum. It is rectangular in shape and it was the center of Roman public life for centuries.
7 Piazza Venezia Piazza Venezia is one of most important squares in Rome. It is at the foot of the Capitoline Hill and Next to Trajan's Forum. Four of the most important streets in Rome start here: Via dei Fori imperiali, Via del Corso, Via del Plebiscito, Via Nazionale.
8 Piazza del Popolo Piazza del Popolo is a large urban square in Rome, situated at the foot of the Pincio, in the centre of the square stands the Egyptian obelisk of Ramesses II, and around it we can see 3 churches and 2 fountains.
9 Piazza Barberini Piazza Barberini is a large square in the center of Rome, situated on the Quirinal Hill and created in the 16 th century but many buildings around of it have been rebuilt, at the center of Piazza is the Triton fountain carved by Bernini. Another fountain carved by Bernini near Piazza Barberini is the Fountain of the Bees in Via Vittorio Veneto.
10 Fontana del Tritone The Triton Fountain is a 17 th center fountain in Rome built by the Baroque sculptor Bernini and commissioned by Urban VIII. It is near Palazzo Barberini and located in the center of Piazza Barberini.
11 Fontana delle Api - Fountain of the Bees The Fountain of the Bees is (like the Fontana del Tritone) a fountain located in Piazza Barberini, a sculpture by Bernini completed in April On The fountain VRBANVS VIII PONTIFEX MAXISMVS FONTI AD PVBLICVM VRBIS ORNAMENT EXTRVCTO SINGVLARVM VISIBVS SEORISM COMMODITATE HAC CONSVLVIT ANNO MDCXLIV PONT XXI Pope Urban VIII, built a fountain in the public ornament of the City, except that he made this fountain for the use of citizens in the year 1644.
12 Villa Borghese Villa Borghese is large public garden in center of Rome, containing many 17 th century buildings, it is the third largest public park in Rome. One of most important monuments in the Villa are Casino Nobile or Villa Borghese Pinciana.
13 Villa Borghese Villa Borghese Pinciana, now Galleria Borghese, is one of most beautiful and important monuments in Villa Borghese.
14 Piazza di Spagna The Spanish Steps Piazza di Spagna is one of the most famous squares in Rome, in the middle of the square is the famous Fontana della Barcaccia, carved by Pietro Bernini and his son, the famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
15 Piazza di Spagna: La Barcaccia Fountain It is a famous fountain in Rome, in the middle of Piazza di Spagna, commissioned by Pope Urban VIII and completed by Pietro Bernini and his son Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
16 Fontana di Trevi The Trevi Fountain Fontana di Trevi was built by Nicola Salvi in 1735, it is the largest fountain in Rome and one of most important and beautiful fountains in the world. Tradition says if you throw a coin into the fountain, you ll return to Rome.
17 The Pantheon The Pantheon is an amazing building commissioned by Marco Agrippa during the empire of Augustus, it is one of the best preserved monuments of Ancient Roman buildings.
18 Church of St. Louis of the French The church is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, St. Denis The Areopagite and St. Louis IX (King of France). It is near Piazza Navona and inside the Church we can see 3 amazing paintings by the famous painter Caravaggio.
19 Inside this church, Caravaggio painted about the life of St. Matthew with three paintings: The Inspiration of St. Matthew, The Calling of St. Matthew, The Martyrdom of St. Matthew.
20 The Calling of Saint Matthew The Calling of Saint Matthew describes the moment when Jesus Christ inspires Saint Matthew to follow him. The painting was completed in 1600 for the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi, where it remains today.
21 The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew This Painting by Caravaggio shows the Martyrdom of St. Matthew. It was the first of the three paintings to be put in the church, maybe in July 1600.
22 The Inspiration of Saint Matthew It is one of most difficult paintings for Caravaggio, it is hanging between the Martyrdom of St. Matthew and The calling of St. Matthew.
23 Piazza Navona It is a city square built in the 1 st century AD but only in the 15 th century it became an open public space. It is an example of Baroque Roman architecture and art. In its center stands the famous Fountain of the Four Rivers, an amazing fountain by Bernini. Piazza Navona has two additional fountains by Bernini, The Neptune Fountain and the Moor Fountain.
24 Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi - Fountain of the Four Rivers It is a fountain standing in the center of Piazza Navona, designed by Bernini for Pope Innocent X. It is topped by an Egyptian obelisk with the emblem of a dove with an olive twig.
25 Fontana del Moro The Moor Fountain The Moor Fountain is located at the southern end of Piazza Navona and it represents a Moor (an African man) standing on a shell, with a dolphin and surrounded by 4 tritons. The original fountain was designed by Giacomo della Porta in 1575 while in 1653 Bernini added the statue of the Moor. In 2011 the fountain was damaged after a vandal attack.
26 Fontana del Nettuno / Fountain of Neptune The Fountain of Neptune is located at the north end of Piazza Navona, the basin part of the fountain (without the sculpture) was designed by Giacomo Della Porta, who also designed The Moor Fountain. The Neptune was added in the19 th century by Antonio della Bitta.
27 SAN PIETRO / ST. PETER S St. Peter s square is the square in front of St. Peter s Basilica in Vatican City. At the center of the square stands an Egyptian Obelisk erected in The square was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini almost 100 year later including the massive Tuscan Colonnades, four columns deep, which embrace visitors. Bernini designed a granite fountain in 1675 in the square.
28 Hadrian s Villa Hadrian s Villa is a large Roman archaeological complex in Tivoli, near Rome. The villa was constructed at Tibur (modern Tivoli) by the Roman Emperor Hadrian. It is a building complex of over 30 constructions, the most important of which include State rooms, theaters, temples, libraries, spas.
29 Villa d Este Villa d Este is a villa in Tivoli near Rome and near Villa Adriana. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its amazing Renaissance architecture and Renaissance gardens.
