2 Florence & Rome, Italy Immerse yourself in experiential learning spend the summer in Florence and Rome with College of the Canyons and ACCENT. Florence and Rome become an extension of your classroom as you explore Italian monuments, churches and museums while attending tourism and art classes taught by the program faculty. Participants of the Summer in Florence and Rome Program live in student apartments in a residence in Florence and located throughout the city in Rome. Optional one-day excursions to locations such as Siena, Venice and Milan as well as an optional two-day/one-night excursion to Pompeii. The ACCENT Florence and Rome Study Centers provide support and guidance to students on each of its programs. Once you have enrolled, you will receive more detailed application and enrollment forms as well as a student handbook. With more than 20 years of experience coordinating high-quality overseas study programs, ACCENT works in partnership with U.S. colleges and universities to develop academically challenging and culturally enriching overseas study experiences in Paris, Florence, London, Madrid, Rome and Istanbul. Each city is home to a fully staffed ACCENT Study Center that serves as a home base for program participants. The ACCENT San Francisco Center coordinates program enrollment and pre-departure preparation for students, helping to make their transition to living overseas as smooth as possible. June 13 - July 17, 2016 The fully-staffed ACCENT Florence and Rome Study Centers serve as a home base to program participants. In Florence the Study center is in the historic city center near the Ponte Vecchio and the Boboli Gardens and the Study Center in Rome is located in the historic city center near the Piazza Navona. The ACCENT Study Centers are open during the week for students to access the resource and lending library, use the computer lab, ask questions, collect their mail and take advantage of a variety of other student services.
3 Program Faculty Professor Kevin Anthony is the Department Chair for the Hotel and Restaurant Management program at College of the Canyons. During his third year of college, he studied at Loyola Chicago Rome Center of Liberal Arts and has visited Rome on numerous occasions. This travel abroad program will be his fourth trip with students from College of the Canyons. As a student in Rome, I found that my experience in this wonderful city was transformational in my education and created interests and curiosities that I still pursue. Originally from Glasgow, Scotland, Professor Michael McCaffrey has been teaching Art & Art History at College of the Canyons since He received a BFA from Glasgow School of Art in Scotland and a Masters in Fine Art from the University of Illinois after emigrating to the USA in His artwork is represented in public and private collections throughout the USA and Europe, such as the June & Francis Spiezer Collection at the Rockford Art Museum in Rockford, Ill., and Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. This travel abroad program will be his second trip with students from College of the Canyons. Application and Enrollment The Summer in Florence and Rome Program is open to students who are at least 18 years of age by the time of departure. Program space is limited. Students should send the enclosed application with the $250 non-refundable first payment to ACCENT as soon as possible. Upon receipt of your application and first payment, ACCENT and College of the Canyons will send you additional enrollment forms. Due to limited space on this program, students should apply by March 31, Beyond March 31, limited enrollment is allowed when space permits and all payments have been received by the ACCENT San Francisco Center. Transferable Academic Credit The Summer in Florence and Rome Program is offered for transferable college credit through College of the Canyons. College of the Canyons is an accredited California Community College that will provide a transcript upon request for the coursework completed overseas. Most courses are transferable to the University of California and California State University systems. Please verify the transferability of courses with your advisor or registrar before you apply. Academic Curriculum Students on the Summer in Florence and Rome program must enroll in both courses for a total of 6 credits. Upon arrival all participants will be given a five-hour survival Italian course. Both courses are CSU transferable. HRMGT 102: Introduction To The Tourism Industry Units: 3.00 CSU hours lecture. Examines operations, principles and trends in the emerging tourism industry, emphasizing the marketing and the competitive service strategies of major tourist attractions. ART 205: Landmarks Of Art And Visual Culture Units: 3.00 UC:CSU hours lecture. Introduces great works of art and visual culture, both past and present, as a means of stimulating visual, emotional, and intellectual awareness of the artistic heritage of world art. Program Timetable Application due: with first payment Final payment due: April 1 Pre-departure orientation: May (TBD) Departure from U.S.: June 12 Arrival in Florence: June 13 Cultural Program Cultural learning is an integral part of the Summer in Florence and Rome Program. Participants attend on-site lectures at museums and historical sites within and outside of Florence and Rome. These sites include: In Florence: Uffizi Gallery Accademia Bargello Brancacci Chapel In Rome: Vatican Museum & Sistine Chapel Villa Borghese Capitoline Museums Castel Sant Angelo Colosseum & Roman Forum City Museum of Rome St. Sebastian/Stephens catacombs St. John Lateran Santa Maria Maggiore St. Paul outside the Walls Santa Maria Trastevere Trevi Fountain Spanish Steps Via Condotti Piazza del Popolo Piazza Navona St. Peter s Vittorio Emanuele Museum & Military Museum The Pantheon Also available on the program are three optional one-day excursions to Siena ($40), Venice ($155) and Milan ($120), including transportation and entry fees as well as a two-day/one-night excursion to Pompeii/Herculaneum ($265), including transportation, double/triple/quad accommodation and entries. Excursions and visits are chosen based on the academic curriculum and are subject to change. Overseas Orientation: June 14 Classes Begin: June 15 Depart Florence/Arrive Rome: June 27 National holidays: June 24 & 29 Return to U.S.: July 17
4 Program Price: $3,435 plus a $150 refundable security deposit Program Price Includes Double rooms in shared student apartments in a residence in Florence and double/triple rooms in shared student apartments Rome Course-related visits to sites within Florence and Rome Five-hour survival Italian course Pre-departure and overseas orientation program, with a practical walking tour of areas in Rome and Florence around the ACCENT Study Centers Transfer via train from Florence to Rome Overseas information and resource center with ACCENT Florence & Rome on-site staff Transit pass for bus and Metro within Rome International Student Identity Card (ISIC) with limited overseas travel and accident insurance Program Price Does Not Include Round-trip airfare (estimated airfare $1,800 - $2,100) Optional one-day excursions to Siena ($40), Venice ($155) and Milan ($120) including transportation and entry costs Optional two-day, one-night excursion to Pompeii/Herculaneum ($265), including transportation, double/triple/quad accom- modation and entries Payment Schedule Non-refundable first payment $250 Final payment due April 1, 2016 $3,335 The above breakdowns include the $150 refundable security deposit. The payment schedule is the applicant s contractual obligation. Failure to make payment when due shall automatically cancel participant from the program one week after payment due date. All payments are effective the day they are received by the ACCENT San Francisco Center. ACCENT, in its sole discretion, may reinstate an applicant subject to availability of space and late enrollment fees. ACCENT charges a $30 bounced check fee for each check received that is not promptly paid by your bank in the normal course of business. Transportation All participants must check in at the ACCENT Florence Study Center June 13, 2016 between 9am and 5pm (Note: most transatlantic flights depart one day before their arrival date). Airfare is not included in the program fee. College of the Canyons Tuition & Fees A $46-per-unit enrollment fee must be paid to College of the Canyons at the time of registration. Nonresidents of California pay $225 per unit. Fees are set by the State of California and are subject to change. Students must provide proof of travel insurance at time of registration. Participants are liable for payments until written cancellation is received. Courses offered, together with other related matters contained herein, are subject to change without notice by the administration and/or Governing Board of the District for reasons related to enrollment, finances, scheduling, dates and costs or for any other reason, at the discretion of the District. The District further reserves the right to add, amend or repeal any of its rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Travel, housing, meals and other logistical arrangements are provided by a contracting agency not affiliated with the District. Any costs and damages related to such arrangements, including cancellation fees and non-refunding of payments, are the responsibility of and are at the sole risks of each participant. Participants will be required to sign a travel release, releasing the District from any liability. The District assumes responsibility only for providing a supervising instructor and appropriate academic units for courses. All courses are subject to approval by the Governing Board of Santa Clarita Community College District. All students must enroll for course credit (credit/no credit option available when indicated in the catalog); no auditors are allowed. Units and course grades will be awarded by the District. ACCENT is not responsible for the academic segment of the program except as specified in the contract between ACCENT and College of the Canyons. Nor is ACCENT responsible for airline delays of any kind, or for expenses or loss incurred as a result of such delays. With regard to transportation/travel, regardless of the type of vehicle, ACCENT acts for the passenger as agent only. ACCENT assumes no liability for accident, injury, damage, or loss in any vehicle, or as a result of default by any person or company engaged in transporting the passenger.
