BRIEF HISTORICAL BACK GROUND OF EACH PROGRAMME OF STUDY Article 26 of the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities of which Ghana is a signatory, enjoins all nations to respond appropriately and to enhance the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of life. This entails making relevant programmes and services accessible to individuals with disabilities in their own communities. In pursuance of the UN Convention, the Department of Special Education, Winneba in collaboration with Sight Savers International (SSI) mounted a 2-year Diploma Programme for the training of Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) workers in 2004. The 2-year Post Diploma in Community Based Rehabilitation Programme is designed to improve students skills in management of rehabilitation services for persons with disability in their communities Rationale The 2-year Post Diploma B.Ed. Programme in Community Based Rehabilitation and Disability Studies will train students to become managers of rehabilitation projects and services. Objectives of the Programme 1. To train personnel to understand disability issues in relation to the general development of society, and the management of Community Based Rehabilitation programme. 2. To equip Community Based Rehabilitation staff with appropriate skills and knowledge for facilitating and development and implementation of relevant policies relating to disabilities. 3. To develop Community Based Rehabilitation workers and disability activists to ensure the effective implementation of social inclusive programmes in Ghana and the rest of Africa Entry requirements for admission of students Eligible Candidates The candidate should possess a diploma in one of the following related fields: Programme for Rehabilitation Personnel, Social Work, Special Education, Nursing, Teaching, Agriculture, Guidance and Counseling, Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy, Community Development, Early Childhood Care and Development. DESCRIPTION OF COURSES Course Code: CBRD 311 Course Title: Development and Social Issues in Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities The course will enable students to engage in discussion relating to inclusion of persons with disabilities and development of their communities. Topics will include basic definitions, explanations of concepts, theories underpinning development and disability. The course will also investigate specific issues such as culture, service provision, technology transfer, human rights, poverty and literacy in relation to community development.
Course Code: CBRD 312 Course Title: Disability Studies The course is designed to enable students to engage in further discussions of the causes and prevention of impairments in developing countries including Ghana. it also covers an in-depth understanding of the various theories and concepts underpinning different perspectives of disability. Course Code: CBRD 313 Course Title: Interdisciplinary Collaboration The course will examine strategies to collaborate with other professionals that work with persons with disabilities at the local community, municipality and metropolitan levels. Topics include making contacts, attending meetings, calling and organizing meeting, making referrals interpreting reports. Course Code: CBRD 321 Course Title: Perspective and guidelines of CBR The course will examine the historical development of CBR and international perspective of CBR. It will provide a detailed study of the WHO/ILO/UNESCO CBR CBR guidelines as well as the CBR matrix and the life-cycle approach, including the various components and their associated elements. The concept of right and needs based approaches in rehabilitation will be examine. Course Code: CBRD 322 Course Title: Field Orientation The course will enable students to acquire practical knowledge and skills in the management of community based rehabilitation and programmes/projects structures, as well as procedures in the implementation of programmes and services. Course Code: CBRD 323 Course Title: Practicum 1 Field Training in CBR Services A survey of types of services available for persons with disabilities in the community. Topics will include identification of target groups, planning, designing content of programme, training techniques, skills transfer and challenges in field training
Course Code: CBRD 324 Course Title: Disability and Early Childhood Education The course will examine issues relating to disability and early childhood period. It will discuss rights, provisions and services for young children with disabilities, national persons with disability Act, as well as constitutional provisions regarding education of young children in Ghana. The course will include the requirements for the early childhood education for the disabled child as provided under the community based rehabilitation and the life-cycle matrix Course Code: CBRD 325 Course Title: Primary Rehabilitation Services The course will expose students to issues concerning primary rehabilitation services, including guidance and counseling, daily living skills, and basic mobility techniques. These pre-rehabilitation activities should be available prior to provision of primary rehabilitation service. It also deals with planning, management and evaluation of rehabilitation services. The course will highlight skills and knowledge required for the delivery of rehabilitation services. Course Code: CBRD 431 Course Title: Practicum 2 Practical Training in CBR Management The study will focus on management of CBR programmes. The following issues will be considered: planning of the delivery of CBR services, implementing CBR services, follow up services, financing CBR projects, counseling skills, negotiating, organizing family visits, interdisciplinary forums, writing a report, budgeting and procurement. Course Code: CBRD 432 Course Title: Disability and Early Childhood Education The course will expose student to different assistive devices for persons with disabilities. It will also include the usage and maintenance of assistive devices. Attention will also be given to local production of assistive devices with special reference to mobility-enhanced devices, optical and non-optical devices as well as hearing aids. Course Code: CBRD 433 Course Title: Project Management Strategies: Lectures, Discussions, Videos and Field Trip and Field Studies The course introduces students to general project management. It focuses on key issues relevant to general project management and specifically on the management of CBR programmes and other disability related initiatives. The course will cover the following: project planning and control, project time management and control, project cost management and control, accounting and auditing, quantity management in projects, monitoring and evaluation of projects, development and use of the log frame.
Course Code: CBRD 434 Course Title: Practical work in CBR and Project Management The course will provide students with hands-on experiences on initiation of CBR and implementation of the CBR matrix and the life-cycle approach. Additionally, the course will equip the students with basic knowledge and skills in the delivery and facilitation of the primary rehabilitation services. The students will also practice the rudiments of project management and how to address and enhance CBR project management related issues. Course Code: CBRD 435 Course Title: Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities A study of strategies to empower persons with disabilities in their communities. Topics will include decision-making skills, assertiveness, self-concept independent living, working, searching for and maintaining employment, assertiveness, self-concept, role in community and family seeking for services, human rights issues and self-advocacy. Course Code: CBRD 441 Course Title: (Internship-Field Placement) The course will offer students supervised practice at community based rehabilitation projects (CBRPs) at various communities.
