1 UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION, WINNEBA COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE EDUCATION MAMPONG-ASHANTI THE INTEGRATED AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT FOR BACHELOR S DEGREE IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SANITATION EDUCATION
2 BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF EACH PROGRAMME OF STUDY. In the 2010/2011 academic year, the BSc degree in Environmental Health and Sanitation Education Programme was introduced as one of the programmes offered at the College of Agriculture Education. Unit of the institution to offer/offering each programme of study: i) Name of Department: Integrated and Environmental Science Education ii) Date of establishment: August, 2010 iii) Name and qualification of Head and Staff (distinguish between part-time and full-time and also teaching and non-teaching staff by functions) iv) Structure and organisation of Department (select relevant one) The Integrated and Environmental Science education Department is one of the academic departments of the Faculty of Agriculture Education. It runs the B.Ed/BSc Integrated Science Education, BSc Environmental Health and Sanitation Education and Sandwich Diploma in Environmental Health and Sanitation Education Programme. Rationale, goals and objectives of the programme of study: (a) Rationale Professional capacity building in environmental health and sanitation is necessary in many societies because of inherent poor sanitation, poor environmental management and associated problems. The proposed BSc. programme in Environmental Health and Sanitation Education (EHSE) is a sequel to the lower version, the Sandwich Diploma programme, and is designed to produce higher level manpower for the public health and sanitation services sector of the country. The goal of the programme is to provide students with the scientific principles and concepts to understand, identify and analyse environmental problems both natural and man-made, and also to evaluate the risks associated with these problems. The programme also will equip students with the knowledge and skills required in the field of water supply and sanitation within a given environment and social circumstances. Currently there are several middle level professionals in the discipline who desire to upgrade themselves to make them more effective and efficient in their duties. These include Diploma holders from the School of Hygiene, School Hygiene Education Programme (SHEP) coordinators, Teachers handling School Hygiene activities at the basic schools, Community Health Nurses and allied professionals. It is hoped that upon completion of the programme, successful candidates would not only have gained considerable insight into the basic subject matter of environmental health and sanitation, but also would have come to a better appreciation of the numerous environmental health and sanitation problems affecting their communities and be better equipped to educate community members on environmental health, hygiene and sanitation issues. (b) Goals and Objectives The main aim of the programme is to produce graduates who will be useful in ensuring standards in environmental health and sanitation delivery in Ghana. The objectives are to train students to: Appreciate the scientific principles underlying environmental quality and its management Understand the range of suitable technologies for water supply and waste management Be knowledgeable about the various health problems associated with poor management of the environment and Understand the links between human health, water and sanitation On completion of the programme students should be able to: Provide educational, counseling and behaviour change skills in a variety of settings to impact pos-
