1 Department of Social Work Description The B. Social Work degree programme is designed to introduce and equip students with knowledge, skills and understanding of the remedial, pro-active and developmental approaches to social service delivery to disadvantaged individuals, groups and communities in accordance with policy as outlined in the White Paper for Social Welfare of Rules a) General rules of the Faculty of Arts apply. b) The curriculum shall extend over at least four years of study. c) A student shall complete the practical work programme for the second, third and fourth year levels and shall hand in all reports as determined by the Head of Department. A student who does not report at the social welfare and social work agency where he/she is placed and does not produce satisfactory written justification for his/her absence, will not be considered to have met the requirements for the practical work programme. d) From the second, third and fourth year of study, students undergoing practical work must register with the South African Council for Social Service Professions as a student social worker in terms of the regulations made under the Social Service Professions Act, B. AENG121 Practical English 1 A This module introduces students to the basic skills required for academic reading and writing. Study material will be selected for relevance to the student s specific programme of study. APSY 111 Introduction to Psychology Introduces students to psychology, what it is, different categories and different approaches, as well as its development as a science Discusses the relationship between human behaviour and the functioning of the brain and mind. Topics such as neuroscience and behaviour, sensation and perception, states of consciousness, learning and memory, form the content for this module. social work Introduce students to various empowerment strategies: linking clients to resources in ways which improve their self esteem, assisting clients to gain self confidence and imparting processes and skills which will enable the client to complete specific skills. AENG122 Practical English 1 B This module will develop the reading and writing skills introduced in AENG121. Study material will be relevant to the student s specific programme. ASGY 122 Social change and Development Human social structures Politics and democracy Traditional Culture and Change Women and Development Family. ASWK211 School Social Work and Social Group work with reference to activity groups group work practice to students as one of the social work methods This module is preparing students to work with groups, where group work is seen to have a meaningful intervention in a variety of social settings. YEAR 2 ASWK 212 Cross cultural understanding in professional practice students to cross-cultural knowledge, skills and practice, and be able to work with diverse client groups who are different from them in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, language and cultural practice. ASWK 221 Social casework, family and child care The purpose of this module is to educate students with the caring of children during inception till birth Students to know about the child in the family, eg parents & siblings influence,family sisze and socio ASWK 222 Life skills (fieldwork practice) To train social work students(train the trainer) on life skills with the purpose of imparting that knowledge to clients, individuals, groups and communities 121

Classroom learning should come alive during practicum. Students should strive to identify the beliefs, values and theory behind their decisions and selection of an intervention ASWK 341 Philosophy of social work and social work ethics The purpose of this module is to help students to understand the philosophy of social work and social work ethics 123 students make during practical sessions providing a service to the community while learning at the same time and students also learning from communities ASWK 322 Research methodology: Beginning social work research students to knowledge, skils and values of social work research ASWK 332 Integrated service learning (Fieldwork practice 2) The purpose of this module is to allow students to have field trips to communities with the purpose of providing a service to the community while at the same time they are learning from the community and the classroom (reciprocity) Students will be credited for the service rendered to the community as it is integrated into the curriculum Students reflections on their experience will inform this course review CBMG302 Business Management 3B

6 ASWK431 Fieldwork Practice 3: Indirect practice: Agency Assessment against the following observed and implemented by social workers To observe how agencies use legislative Acts ASWK441 Fieldwork 3 : Indirect practice: Practical Work Assessment Assessment strategies are utilised to assess the overall practicuum experience of the student in terms of services rendered by the agency Student supervision Ethics and social work values utilised during block placement Social Work theories used during the intervention with the client and case examples how these theories were used Recommendations/suggestions to the agency and/or university regarding practicuum ASWK 432 Management and administration in social work At the end of this module students should: Demonstrate understanding of the roles, functions,principles and characteristics of management and administration with social service deliveryto work effectively and multi & To understand the agency s purpose, policies and operations To assess the agency s functioning Agency s organogram To establish how the Agency is funded To establish who are the Agency s stakeholders To ascertain how student & Social Work supervision is done in the agency To ascertain how social work ethics are utilized by the agency To ascertain if Social Work skills interdisciplinary teams in social service delivery To identify the levels of supervision and styles of supervision To understand social work administration and management ASWK442 Youth & Social Service (Social Policy, Human Rights, Gender & gender based violence) To introduce students to policies that entail legislations and guide social service delivery in South Africa To introduce students to the legal framework of gender and gender based violence and human rights and the role of the social worker in these spheres To identify and become familiar with social policies that directly influence the operation and activities of social work practice To identify, become familiar with, and analyze social policies that most directly affect clients or consumers of service To understand the types of gender based violence Theoretical approaches to gender based 125

All students should take ASW 501, 502 and 503 and then select one of the optional papers/ modules. The research paper and practical work are compulsory. Master's Degree (Course/Community Work) (AMAS24) The examination of the coursework master's degree in community work consists of four 3 hour papers plus a dissertation of approximately 100 pages (which will account for 50% of the final mark for the degree) and practical work.
