Software, tools and technologies: A short sharp look at the opportunities of using technology to support Business Process Modelling David Telford Depute Director, C&ITS 15 September 2010
Our current BPM approach High level Business Process Modelling Not modelling at the level of UML but similar to activity diagrams Not the techniques directly associated with BPMN, CogNIAM, xbml, EPC or IDEF0 A centralised store of existing and newly developed Business process Maps; SharePoint Microsoft Visio used as primary mapping tool Customised approach to mapping that is generally understood by the non-expert user
Our aims Raise the profile of process mapping Create a network of process mappers to encourage adoptation of standards and consistency Develop policies and procedures for the standardisation of process mapping, modelling and engineering Map Core University end to end processes Record and maintain University process relationships highlighting process dependencies Develop a University Process library which is accessed through the University Intranet Support Organisational change and inform decisions on structure, resource utilisation and the impact of process change
The mapping process: The high level modules
The mapping process: Input/output
The mapping process: teaching module process
The mapping process: Agents, activities & notes

key features Edinburgh Napier requires; Efficiently map end to end processes for Analysis, Simulation & Linking to IT systems A centralised process library A single location point for all cross departmental processes Multiple role access to process maps and forms Web based Collaborative modelling The ability to relate maps and manage version control Archiving feature What if process change where the impacts on interrelated processes can be seen Resource management The ability to assign resources to processes Report on resource impact on a proposed change
The systems we are exploring? Triaster Process capture Web based access to centralised store Integration with Excel, Visio Publishing mechanism with approval process Web based library with search for quick retrieval Library reports to assist improvement Improvement work bench with protected areas for comparison of as is and to be states Collaboration Simple to use Top level process outline maps Drill down through elements and sub processes Each element associated with resources
