Chapter 2: Overview 2. Overview 2.1 About the icompel WDS Wearable Digital Signage The WDS is a portable presentation tool. It enables you to display digital signage content on a player screen that fits in the palm of your hand and attaches easily to your clothing via a magnet. Typical applications include: Deliver a message through professional video content. For example, a salesperson can choose an item from the playlist to demonstrate a presentation to a customer. In-store promotion to increase sales: For example, in a retail store, each employee has a WDS. Every day the employees can download new content to the WDS. The employees can all have the same content, or different content. 2.2 What s Included Your package should contain the following items. Chapter 3: Getting Started 3. Getting Started Get up and running in five easy steps: 1. Load the software. 2. Configure the software on your computer. 3. Familiarize yourself with the WDS. 4. Download the content. 5. Wear your sign! 3.1 STEP 1: Load the Software 1A. Insert the mini CD disk into the computer, then run setup.exe. 1B. The screen shown in Figure 3-1 appears. Figure 3-1. System tray. 3.2 STEP 2: Configure the Software and Add Your WDS Player 2A. Click OK. The Configuration screen shown in Figure 3-12 appears. 2B. Look at the label on the back of the unit. The serial number is printed here. This should match the number in the Publisher Address field in Figure 3-12. 724-746-5500 blackbox.com Page 11

Chapter 3: Getting Started Figure 3-12. Configuration screen. First look at these four fields on the screen: the icompel EDS Publisher Address, User, Password, and Password Confirmation. Type in the address of your icompel EDS, the user name, password, and password confirmation. Table 3-1 describes all the fields in the Configuration screen. Chapter 3: Getting Started 3.3 STEP 3: Familiarize Yourself with the WDS First, take a look at the diagram below. It shows the locations of the connectors, indicators, and buttons on the WDS. Number Component Description 1 ON/OFF switch Powers the unit ON or OFF. 2 Microphone Audio in. 3 Lanyard grid (portrait mode) Loop the lanyard through these connectors to use the screen in portrait view. 4 MIni USB conector Connects to client computer. 5 3.5-mm audio connector Audio from client computer. 6 Back button Goes back to the previous screen. 7 Volume button Adjusts the volume. 8 Reverse button Reverses the presentation. 9 Forward button Forwards the presentation. 10 Play button Plays the playlist. 11 Lanyard grid (landscape mode) Loop the lanyard through these connectors to use the screen in landscape view. 12 LCD screen Displays playlist content. 13 Speakers Audio from playlist. 14 Mini TF card slot Used to upgrade memory. 15 Magnet Attaches the tag to user. 3.4 STEP 4: Download Content STOP! MAKE SURE THE WDS UNIT IS POWERED OFF! Synchronizing with the power on can lead to unexpected results such as corrupt content. 4A. Attach one end of the included USB cable to the computer that s running the client software. 4B. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the USB connector on the WDS. 4C. Chapter 3: Getting Started 4D. Click Continue. 3.5 STEP 5: Wear Your Sign! Figure 3-17. Client tool progress screen. 5A. Clip the WDS onto your shirt with the magnet. Then power on the WDS. NOTE: See Figure 3-15 for the location of the power button. 5B. Power on the unit. The current playlist screen appears. NOTE: The system administrator determines the current playlist. Your WDS is ready to use. The playlist pops up automatically after power up. 724-746-5500 blackbox.com Page 17

Chapter 4: Using the WDS 4. Using the WDS 4.1 Playing the Playlist The WDS displays the playlist set by the system administrator. Use the buttons described in Table 4-1 to navigate through the Playlist display. Table 4-1. Buttons on the WDS. Number in Figure 3-15 Button Description 7 Volume button Adjusts the volume. 8 Reverse button Reverses the presentation. 9 Forward button Forwards the presentation. 10 Play button Plays the playlist. If your content changes by the day, hour, or work shift, follow the instructions below to download new content. 4.2 Updating the Content on the WDS To check for new content each interval (day, hour, or work shift), first MAKE SURE THAT THE WDS IS POWERED OFF, and connect the WDS to the client as described in Section 3.2. 4.3 Additional Features 4.3.1 System Menu Press the Play key to enter the option menu, then press and hold the Back key to exit the submenu and return to the main interface. Setup In the Main Interface, press the left or right arrow key to select Settings, then press the "PLAY" key to enter the Setting interface (located right side top). Select the sub-option by pressing the left or right key. Options include: MUSIC RECORD DISPLAY AUTO PLAY TIME SET SYSTEM POWER OFF TIME DEFAULT SET Display Setup 1. Set the backlight time to go into Screen Save mode in 5, 10, 15, 20, or 30 seconds, or always on. 2. Set the Lum: (brightness of the light) to +1, +2, +3, +4 and +5. The lower the level, the brighter the light. 3. Set the Backlight BACK to Normal or Electricity-Saving mode. Page 18 724-746-5500 blackbox.com

Chapter 4: Using the WDS System Setup Choose from four sub-options: Language, About, Upgrade, and Default. 1. Language Selection: Choose from 20 languages. 2. About: Player storage memory, remaining memory, and system software version number. These fields are read-only, press the BACK key to exit. 3. Firmware upgrade: Click out of the dialog box in this menu, and it reminds you whether to upgrade the firmware, or it will exit if no firmware is upgrading. 4. Default Set: In this menu, click out of the dialog box, confirm whether to resume the default value (select Yes or No ). Power Off Time In this menu, choose from Off, or 10, 15, 30, 60, or 120 minutes. Default Set Click out of the dialog box and confirm whether to format the player (select Yes or No ). 4.3.2 Listen to Music Play/Stop/Pause In the Music Play menu, connect the earphone to the player, then select the desired song file by pressing the left or right arrow key. Press the Play key to play; tap the Play key to pause. When music is playing, the audio frequency displays on the interface. The player only supports the Lyric Synchronous Display format. The file shares the same name as the LRC file in MP3 format. For example, if the music file is named Angel.mp3, the LRC file must be named Angel.Irc, and both files have to be in the same directory, Press _ to change the display frequency and the display lyric. Volume Control Press the VOL Key. The speaker mark on the left side top of the screen changes from pink to green. Press the left or right key to increase or decrease volume. Music Play Setting Menu In Music Play state, press the BACK key to return to the Main Menu and enter the Music in Settings option. Press the left or right arrow key to go to the desired setup menu. Then press the Play key to confirm. A-B Repeat function In Music Play state, press and hold the Vol key to select the beginning point of the repeat. A will display on the screen; until you reach the endpoint of the repeat, then release the key and B will display. The player will repeat the music between the beginning point (A) and the ending point (B). To resume normal play, press the Volume key. The A-B sign on the screen will be switched OFF. 1. Repeat Mode Once: Stop after playing all the songs in each directory Repeat once: Repeat playing a single song. Folder once: Play all the songs in the folder. Folder repeat: Repeatedly play all the songs in the folder. All once: Play the songs in the current folder randomly. All repeat: Play all the songs repeatedly. 724-746-5500 blackbox.com Page 19

Chapter 4: Using the WDS Intro: Play all the songs the first 10 seconds of the current folder. 2. EQ Select In this menu, use the Forward and Back keys to scroll through the options, for example, 3D, Rock, Pop, Classic, Bass, Jazz, and User EQ. 3. Play Mode Order & Shuffle option EQ Select Normal/3D/Rock/Pop/Classic/Bass/Jazz/User EQ. The above eight options will give you different music effects. User EQ set To edit your favorite EQ effect, press the left and right arrow keys, and hold the "VOL" key. 4.3.3 Playing Video In Video Play mode, press "PLAY" to pause the video while playing, press and hold BACK to exit, press and hold the right arrow key to fast forward while playing, press and hold the left arrow key to rewind while playing. Press the right arrow key to move to the next file or press the left arrow key to move to the previous file. Voice REC In the Main Interface, enter the Record state, press the Play key to start recording. Press the Play key again to pause recording. Press the Vol key to save the recorded file and enter the next Record preparation state. Press and hold the BACK key to exit RECORD. REC Setup In the SETTING interface, enter the Record option. Adjust the settings for REC Quality and REC Volume. 1. For REC Quality, choose from high quality and common quality. 2. For REC Volume, choose +1, +2, +3, +4, or +5. You can find the recorded files in the Music Play menu. If the screen displays Full Space, there is no space for new recorded files. Delete other files to release more space. 4.3.4 Resources Manager Resources manager provides information about file type, structure, and contents to help manage and search for file content in classifications. Delete File In the Internet Explorer root directory, you can select photo, music, or video files. Press the VOL key for one second to display the Delete Dialog box. Choose Yes to delete and No to cancel. 4.3.5 USB Disk USB Display BACK The player has a high-speed USB 2.0 port with the transmission speed of 5 Mbps. It s a standard USB disk that supports Windows 98 (it needs to install the driver), Windows 2K (it s unnecessary to install the driver), Mac OS 10.3 and higher, Linux Redhat 8.0 and higher. It supports USB power supply and can be played without a battery. After connecting to the PC (several seconds later), the player will display online backup. Page 20 724-746-5500 blackbox.com

Chapter 4: Using the WDS Charge Display BACK If the battery is too low, the display shows Low battery to power off, then the player is powered off automatically. You can use the attached charger to charge the battery. During charging, the battery icon displays as a partially empty icon. After the charging, the battery electricity shows full grid. The battery fully charges in 6 hours. NOTE: The first two times you charge the battery after receiving the WDS, you must charge it for more than 8 hours. 724-746-5500 blackbox.com Page 21

Troubleshooting 5.1 Problems/Solutions PROBLEM: I attached the WDS to the computer running the client tool, then selected Rescan USB and the WDS tries to read files as if it were a flash drive. CAUSE: The WDS should be powered off before attaching it to the computer. SOLUTION: POWER OFF THE WDS BEFORE CONNECTING IT TO THE COMPUTER. PROBLEM: What is the difference between the hosted version (WDS-H) and the managed version (WDS-M)? SOLUTION: The hosted version (WDS-H) connects to MSM.blackbox.com. For the managed version (WDS-M), you obtain an IP address from your adminstrator. PROBLEM: The player cannot be turned off. SOLUTION: Check whether the player is powered on or not and whether the machine program is damaged or not. PROBLEM: The player cannot be turned on. SOLUTION: Check whether the player is powered on or not and whether the machine program is damaged or not. PROBLEM: The player hangs. SOLUTION: Push the power switch to restart the player. PROBLEM: The player does not play. SOLUTION: Check whether the machine is powered on or not. Confirm that the volume level is not set to 0, check that the earphone is connected securely, and keep the earphone clean. Format the disk again. PROBLEM: Player does not record. SOLUTION: Make sure there is enough memory and electricity. PROBLEM: Words on the display are deformed. SOLUTION: Make sure you have selected the correct language.
