Cell Biologist s Name: Class: 8 Date: Mrs. Bouchard 8 th Grade Science Organelle Packet Directions: Complete all portions of this packet to receive a 3, using complete sentences when appropriate. Have 100% correct answers to receive a 4! 1. For each of the following statements, circle if it is TRUE or FALSE. a. Cells are very, very small. TRUE FALSE b. A cell is the smallest part of a TRUE FALSE living thing that is considered alive. c. Some, but not all living things are made of cells. TRUE FALSE d. Cells help living things do their jobs, like digest food TRUE FALSE and get rid of wastes. Main Course 2. Are Great White Sharks made of cells? Yes or No: Explain Your Answer: 3. Finish this sentence by using the word cell to explain why cells are sort of like bricks: Just like buildings are made of many bricks all put together, 4. How is a cell like a factory? Finish this sentence, using the word organelle: Just like a factory has machines that help it do its jobs,
DIRECTIONS: Below are descriptions of the nine organelles you have studied. Next to each, write the name of the organelle that is being described. Use your Cell Adventure Book to help you out (but you should be able to do it without it!). WORD BANK: nucleus, cell membrane, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosome, golgi body, lysosome, vacuole, cytoplasm. Organelle Descriptions Which Organelle? The cell s control center, or brain. It directs all of the cell s activities. This organelle takes materials the cell makes, prepares them to be transported, and sends them to other parts of the cell or outside the cell. These are large sacs within a cell that are used to store food, water and other important substances. The boundary that separates the cell from the outside environment. It controls what substances come into and out of a cell. The powerhouses of the cell. They convert energy in food to energy the cell can use to carry out its tasks. These are small tanks that contain chemicals that break down materials in the cell. Some break down food into smaller pieces. Others break down old cell parts and release what they were made of so they can be used again. This organelle is a series of passageways that carry materials from one part of the cell to another. These organelles make proteins, important chemicals that we use to make new cells. This isn t an organelle, but is actually the jello-like stuff inside the cell that holds all of the organelles.
DIRECTIONS: Below is a diagram of the cell. Label the diagram with the organelles. One partner fills out the white boxes, and the other fills out the gray boxes. Use your Cell Adventure Book to help you out! WORD BANK: nucleus, cell membrane, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosome, golgi body, lysosome, vacuole, cytoplasm. Up for a challenge? ANALOGIES! We ve been learning about the parts of the cell by comparing them to the parts of a factory. Can you think of your own analogies for the cell organelles? Write analogies for each of the nine organelles we have learned about. Here are some examples. The endoplasmic reticulum is like the hallways at Talbot. Both are passageways that let things either people or materials move and be transported. The Golgi Body is like my mom during the holidays. She wraps presents and sends them to relatives just like the Golgi Body packages and sends materials around and out of the cell. The nucleus is like The cell membrane is like The mitochondria are like The endoplasmic reticulum is like The ribosomes are like The Golgi Body is like A vacuole is like A lysosome is like
Think about our time with plant cells and animal cells and how their cells are different! A full answer will correctly use the words cell, cell wall, large central vaculole, and chloroplast. For each of the following statements, circle whether the statement is TRUE or FALSE. a. Plant cells have cell walls, but animal cells do not. TRUE FALSE b. Animal cells have cell membranes, but plant cells do not. TRUE FALSE c. Both plant cells and animal cells have chloroplasts. TRUE FALSE d. Plants have one large vacuole to store water. TRUE FALSE but animal cells have many smaller vacuoles. e. Both plant cells and animal cells have mitochondria. TRUE FALSE Which of the following best describes the role of the cell wall in a plant cell? a. It makes the major decisions of the cell. b. It is the powerhouse of a plant cell, responsible for producing energy. c. It is the outside of the cell, and helps to protect and support it. d. It breaks down and recycles old cell parts. Which of the following best describes the role of the chloroplast in a plant cell? a. Packaging materials the cell needs and sending them around the cell. b. Capturing the sun s energy so plants can use it to make their own food. c. Letting important materials enter the cell and keeping dangerous materials out. d. Storing food, water and other important substances.
What does the cell wall do for a plant cell? What does a chloroplast do for a plant cell? What if a plant cell did not have chloroplasts? Would it be able to survive? Explain! What if a plant cell did not have a cell wall? Would it be able to survive? Explain! Remember our analogies? For example, the nucleus is like the central office of a factory, because just like the central office makes decisions, the nucleus controls what the cell does. What is a good analogy for the chloroplast? (Start, The chloroplast is like ) What is a good analogy for the cell wall? (Start, The chloroplast is like ) Label the two chloroplasts on the diagram of the cell to the right. Label the cell wall on the diagram of the cell to the right. Work Hard. Get Smart.
Determine if the statement is TRUE or FALSE (circle the correct answer): Prokaryotes do not have a nucleus to hold their DNA. TRUE FALSE Prokaryotes are complex cells with many organelles. TRUE FALSE Eukaryotes have all the organelles we have studied, such as mitochondria and lysosomes. TRUE FALSE Plants and animals both have eukaryotic cells. TRUE FALSE Is the picture to the right a prokaryotic or eukaryotic cell? Explain how you know in 1-2 sentences. Amoebas are pretty unique protists. Can you describe what is different about the way that they get their food and move from the way other protists, such as Chlamydomonas eat and move? Use complete sentences and academic vocabulary.
