Content Content description Emission Scan Logistics The tool in a nutshell Approach People & Resources Results Application Additional Information 2
The tool in a nutshell This tool calculates all relevant emissions in 6 steps and shows the impact of measures This tool calculates all relevant emissions and shows the impact of measures Through lack of knowledge, hauliers and shipping agents find it difficult to determine the exact volume of emissions a company produces and what effect any measures would have on emissions As a result, CE Delft in cooperation with Altimedes Consulting and EVO, has developed the Logistics Emission Scan is a calculator that uses a standardized method to calculate the CO₂, NOx, SO₂ and particular matter emitted through transport, based on data about your specific logistics The purpose of this tool is to provide companies with insight into emissions during transport and the impact of certain parameters upon this. It enables the user to examine: a. What the impact is of measures b. What the cleanest mode of transport is c. The influence of a higher load factor on emissions d. What impact small changes to the business operations can have on emissions The tool consists of 6 steps in which data can be easily edited The tool consists of 6 steps as shown in the figure below (see section Approach for details) Users can explore points a to d (see left) by editing the data entered and viewing the result Enter company information and features of calculation exercise Choose modes and transport types Enter data for each transport mode and transport type Enter measures already implemented Select unit View results 3
Approach User goes through the 6 steps and enters the details so the relevant information is displayed Steps Activities Estimated Time * 1 Enter company details and features for calculation exercise User enters the following details: Name File Name Date Period 5 mins 2 Choose modes and types of transport In this screen the user completes the transport mode matrix. User specifies the transport for the calculation of the emissions. User selects the relevant transport by checking the boxes for the transport types and modes. The transport types and modes that have been checked (and consequently are relevant) will return in step 4 (data entry). The transport types and modes that have not been selected will not recur in the following steps 30 mins 3 Select unit Depending on the type of product that the company ships, user selects: tons, TEUs, or cubic metres (m3). Reason: to ensure the tool can be used by as many companies as possible. For the calculations, if the TEU or m3 unit is selected, you will be prompted for the weight of this unit 15 mins 4 Enter data for each transport mode and transport type User must also enter details (if applicable) for 3 modes: Road haulage Rail haulage Inland shipping If applicable, user must enter details for these modes concerning: dry bulk, liquid bulk, containers, general cargo, some shipping addresses, and distribution 1 to 2 hours (assuming the data is available) 5 Enter measures already implemented In recent years many companies have already taken measures to reduce emissions caused by transport. This needs to be taken into account in the calculations. For this reason user must specify the measures that have already been implemented. This tab can also be used to calculate the effect of any measures still to be implemented 15 mins 6 View results On the Results tab the results are presented in various formats. These are displayed both graphically and numerically. The numerical results can be made visible by using the expand feature on the left of the screen. It is explained in the instructions which results can be used ½ to 1 hour * Duration depends on whether desired (business) details 4are readily available
People & Resources Input is free, can be done with limited expertise, but correct logistic details must be used Access to company information is critical Emissions can be effectively reduced with the Emission Scan Logistics tool. This requires: Expertise to complete the tool (Business Analyst, Business Controller or Logistics Manager) To complete the requested data, user must have access to detailed logistic information concerning own company and third parties (see on the right) Because of the logical design and explanation, fairly little expertise is required concerning freight logistics Support from Management Team. The MT should set goals to be used as a basis for implementing the measures from the tool Communication of progress Involvement of operational staff in the implementation of improvement measures Using the is free Required investment / cost: The tool is supplied free of charge Required details: The tool requires the following details to be entered * 1. Capacity divided across own, subcontracted and combined transport 2. Load factor divided across own, subcontracted and combined transport 3. % Productive kilometres 4. Composition by size category 5. Split into diesel/electric 6. Divided across waterways 7. Fleet composition according to various classes (e.g. size or Euro) * User requires the above details for the selected transport types and modes (in step 2) 5
Results Test companies Corus, ECT and Electrolux use the Emission Scan for choosing their modes of transport Results Insight into the emissions of CO2, NOX, SO2 and particulate matter according to: Rail, water and road modes of transport. Road transport can be divided into: own transport, subcontracted transport, combined dedicated and subcontracted transport Transport Types: Dry bulk Liquid bulk - Containers - Delivery to some addresses - General cargo- Distribution Insight into the effect of a set of predefined measures on the above emissions and the distribution across transport modes and types Understanding of the effect of changes to the input data on the above emissions and the distribution across transport modes and types. Input data can be edited to explore the effects of a higher load factor or other transport mode combinations The was tested at Corus, Results ECT and Electrolux, in practice among others. These companies use (once only) the Many companies use the emission scan to determine the extent of their CO₂ reduction possibilities for their logistic operations. These are companies enrolled in EVO trajectories (Brabant and group approach), as well as some companies from the current Lean and Green front-runners group. 6
Application Front-runner groups This tool helps shipping agents and hauliers with the four sections of the sustainability process Shipping agents Hauliers Municipalities Target Group PDL (info) Parties interested in Award Potential Award Winners Award Winners Criteria PDL & Search Terms Strategy Tactics Implementation Savings target Baseline (IST) * Determining Scope Choice measuring method Organizational assurance Communication internally and externally Planning and Coordinating Implementatio n Measures (internal & in chain) Monitoring results and corrective action The tool is suitable for: shipping agents and hauliers on their way to obtaining the Award and needing to draw up a Plan of Action. The tool assists with the 4 sections of the plan (see below) The tool: (1) provides a baseline for all relevant emissions, (2) provides insight into the impact of measures. It also provides supports for: (3) determining the scope (less, mainly transport activities) of the Plan of Action for the Lean and Green Award as it shows what the emissions per transport mode and type are, (4) the communication of sustainability performance 7
