Smarter energy development flows from great ideas Oil & Gas
20 For more than 20 years, we ve worked with clients like Enbridge designing the critical infrastructure needed to provide safe, reliable energy across North America.
Finding efficient, safe, and economical ways to develop and deliver oil and gas is an ongoing challenge. Through our partnerships, industry experience, and use of technology, we strive to develop new and inventive ways to solve emerging issues, meet regulations, and increase productivity. One is not sacrificed to achieve the other. We have found that smarter energy development flows from great ideas and good ideas create great design.
We bring energy products to communities across the globe. From deep in the arctic to the vast Canadian oil sands, and at the heart of the U.S. shale plays, Stantec knows the challenge. And, it s a challenge we embrace. Upstream Onshore, Offshore, Conventional Oil & Gas, Oil Sands Midstream Pipelines, Facilities, Terminals Downstream Retail, Refining, LNG, NGL 5,000+ Oil & Gas projects across North America in 2013.
For us, it starts with an idea and we transform it into reality. Meeting the world s growing demand for energy requires patience, perseverance, and new ways of thinking. Right from the start, when oil and gas exploration and production begins, our team is in the field, gathering data and addressing the environmental impacts. We re in the office preparing the detailed environmental assessments and regulatory applications required for project approval. We re conducting feasibility studies, and preparing the front end and detailed engineering packages to get your project and your oil and gas moving. We ve worked with Cenovus in the oil sands for more than three years at their Foster Creek steamassisted gravity drainage (SAGD) facility, finding bottlenecks and determining the need for new equipment. From the smallest pilot projects of 1,000 barrels per day to best-in-class facilities of 300,000 barrels per day, Stantec is finding a better way. Not only do we design the facilities that produce oil and gas, but we also make them more efficient by increasing production and finding ways to do more with less. We have built our presence, people, skills, and systems around our client s assets to keep them sustained or filled. We know the upstream oil and gas industry; we work with clients who are developing both unconventional and conventional sources of oil and gas. Global demand for energy is growing and so is our team and expertise. In us, you ll find a trusted resource with experience in environmental assessments, front end and detailed engineering design, procurement and construction management, as well as access roads, power supply, water treatment, and environmental remediation. 10,000 barrels of oil per day of increased production at Suncor s MacKay River in situ facility.
Delivering oil and gas to market is just as important as developing it. In fact, moving and storing oil and gas is one of our specialties. We re permitting, assessing, and designing some of the most high-profile pipeline and facilitie projects in the industry today. We re developing techniques to ensure constructability of pipelines and facilities without delays. And, we re in the field, surveying the land, overseeing construction activities, and inspecting the finished project to make sure it continues to operate safely and efficiently. We develop, design, install, and maintain oil and gas pipelines and facilities and have worked with all types of products. We re experienced with natural gas (sweet & sour), liquids (crudes, diluent and refined products), and CO 2 and acid gas transmission pipeline systems. Look to some of the biggest and best energy transportation companies TransCanada, Enbridge, Spectra and you ll find a team of Stantec experts embedded in the design and development of biginch pipelines and major storage terminals. We have more than 20,000 kilometres of pipeline, and 2 million horsepower of compression and pumping capacity in our experience roster. When Enbridge needed a consultant with a track record on large terminal projects for their Northern Gateway Pipeline Project, they chose Stantec. They had confidence in us after we completed their award-winning Hardisty Contract Tankage Facility in 2009 one of the largest crude oil storage terminals in North America with 19 new tanks and 7.5 million barrels of storage capacity. Moving Northern Gateway forward, we completed the front end engineering and design (FEED) and Class 3 capital cost estimate for the onshore terminal and the power supply for the pipeline. Once again, our environmental services team is ensuring that projects not only get built, but get built right. We re on the witness stand providing expert testimony helping regulators, clients, and communities discover how to minimize impact and maximize benefits.

We raise the bar on resourcefulness in design.
We ve designed systems to handle virtually any chemical found in a refinery, from crude delivery through to blending and shipment of finished products.
From the first refineries to future facilities For more than 40 years, Imperial Oil has relied on Stantec to modernize its Dartmouth refinery the first in Atlantic Canada which is heating homes, fueling vehicles and boats, and paving the roads in the Atlantic Provinces and Eastern Quebec. Today, Stantec is completing the FEED and detailed design to convert the refinery into a terminal operation. We ve designed systems to handle virtually all hydrocarbon components and chemicals that can be found in a refinery, from crude delivery through to blending and shipment of finished products. Our experience covers design for high-temperature, high-pressure applications associated with fractionation and distillation units, reaction and reforming units, heat exchanger systems, pressure-relieving systems, as well as electrical and instrumentation control for safe and efficient operation and emergency shutdown. As demand for energy continues to grow Stantec has developed experience with the facilities of the future. Natural gas is the world s cleanest burning fossil fuel and its use is on the rise. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology has made it easy to transport this resource. In the past 15 years, we ve completed environmental assessments on eight major LNG terminals across Canada more than any other Canadian firm. Because of this, we have detailed knowledge of the environment, stakeholders, and issues along the shipping routes, including concerns with marine mammals and Aboriginal and commercial fisheries. We ve completed baseline work, effects assessments, information request responses, and public consultation for LNG projects. Our expertise in natural gas processing extends from wellhead to finished products distributed to end users. In addition to upgrade, expansion, revamp, and de-bottlenecking activities for hydrocarbon production and processing units, we have extensive experience in turnaround-maintenance activities for these facilities.
Our ideas can transform and preserve a community. A major pipeline project brought together 12 specialties at Stantec. If the application is successful, the project will inject $270 billion into the economy over the next 25 years and supply 525,000 barrels of oil per day. Whether it s a public consultation session for a facility, a review of habitat locations for a pipeline, or talking through regulatory options before that pipeline gets routed, asking questions and gathering opinions is how we get to new ideas. We know the local environment, the stakeholders, and the issues specific to a region. Though an individual Indiana bat might fit in your hand, failure to properly consider the presence of this species, or other rare, threatened, or endangered species, can have a much bigger impact. Likewise, insufficient data or consultation with appropriate Aboriginal groups and local stakeholders can delay the environmental assessment and approval process. As projects move into closer proximity with existing developments, landowners, and environmental considerations, public concerns are also likely to increase. Oil and gas developers want to be good neighbors in the areas where they work, and choosing the right consulting team can help to build that partnership. Long-term relationships between consultants and owners create understanding and a commitment to do what s right. In the end, an efficient and scientifically and socially defensible assessment is essential to project success. We re making sure that when a project wraps up, the ecosystem and surrounding communities continue on. 14,000 pages the length of our environmental assessment and supporting technical documents on the Northern Gateway Pipeline Project.
Creative, customized, and cost-effective design We find the simplest, smartest, and most sound design to get your project up and running. Combining industry expertise with local knowledge, we take an approach that offers both structured and flexible methodology tailored to each client and project. Our unconventional approach of building constructability into design is proven to not only save time and costs, but to also reduce field rework. And, our engineering and construction management teams work together to take ownership and develop relationships that enable them to deal with issues early and easily before they become problems in the field. Having accumulated more than a decade of experience in 3D modeling programs, we now use this design method almost exclusively on oil and gas projects. We re designing the project together to turn your idea into reality, so we use 3D models right from the initial FEED stage and carry it through to operability reviews. We encourage our client s process operators to participate in the 3D model design review to provide perspective on the operability and safety of the proposed design. In the end, you receive a project layout that works for you, ready for construction without delay. Our 3D models are also made available to construction personnel to help them visualize the system during the construction process. Equipped with the latest technology, tools and systems, Stantec offers a unique perspective to work on projects large and small. Our approach has worked extremely well for our clients, our construction partners, and for the oil and gas community.
