Alicja Panasiewicz Dean of the Faculty of Art Pedagogical University of Cracow Industrial Design course at the Pedagogical University in Cracow, was founded only two years ago, thanks to cooperation of designers who believe that modern design should respond to present-day problems as well as create good solutions. The education program for students of Design is based on close connection between design and human sciences; it is the touchpoint of those two disciplines where we should search for respect for human needs, understanding of his unique characteristics and preferences, while still taking care of so called good design and innovation. Thanks to this idea sustainable design we were pleased to be granted the EU People s Capital founds and Design, Innovation, Society program was announced a commissioned degree course. Projects gathered at the exhibition and in this catalogue are the results of first year students year-long work. Be welcome to see how those young people bring together sustainable design rules with fresh and interesting form.
Dominik Lisik Assistant Design Course At the era of globalization, design is becoming a key to various vital problems. Design isn t only about shaping objects on the axis of form and function or creating new physical objects, but it is also about new processes of industrial production, interactive software and sustainable consumption and resource use. Designers are becoming more than people interested only in aesthetical and usability issues of newly created objects, but also observers, thinkers and commentators who are responsive to social concerns. Objects they create are boosting life quality and helping to break physical barriers imposed on our bodies. Design perfectly backs up and improves developing disciplines like medicine, IT, architecture and social sciences. Deriving from ergonomic research, sociology, psychology, engineering and technology, design is becoming most innovative and simultaneously most humancentered element of civilization growth. A long period of creative drought in Poland surprisingly turned out well. Rapid development of Polish industry is firmly based on experiences of leading European countries. Poland is facing greatest opportunity in decades- we can build our strong design identity avoiding all the mistakes made by others.
Katarzyna Ogińska Lecturer Design Course The first exhibition of Design course of Pedagogical University of Krakow is the effect of students first confrontation with real design problems. It is not an easy task, rather a huge responsibility, not only to brands one creates for, but even more towards the users and the society. A designer needs to posses knowledge in many disciplines. The awareness of the technological and material side of the project needs to be complemented by the strictly humancentered perspective. The compilation of engineering with deep understanding of users needs, their motivations and emotions will be a proper, strong foundation for the design of products that are not only safe, functional and high-quality from the aesthetical perspective but also attractive on emotional level. The objects, which surround us, influence not only how we act in physical sense but also how we think and to what extent we fulfill our intellectual potential. As Donald Norman pointed out: Things can make us smart or dumb. In order to prepare our students to taking the best possible position on today s market, where the products competitiveness is based on combination of top functionality, usability and aesthetics, we inspire them towards designing with awareness and conscience starting from the first attempts. The combination of good crafts with open-mindedness and empathy with end users, allows our students to spread their wings we can already observe the first effects.
SPATIAL MODELLING Topic: object: abstraction / function The course s aim is to develop spatial imagination, learn skills of analysing and modifying of geometrical relations as well as creating modular systems. Broad approach to the objects, their main properties and their scale assumes investigation of relations between abstraction and function. The stress is laid on searching of new ideas, material solutions and means of project realisation. Agnieszka Surma / tutor: Jacek Paździor

CREATIONAL DESIGN BASICS Gabriela Marzec / tutor: Dominik Lisik Topic: project of watering can, project of knives set Course was intended to give knowledge and methods to create functional and ergonomic objects with high aesthetic values to our students. Course included designing process from setting up prerequisites to physical creation of a product.

CREATIONAL DESIGN BASICS Topic: acquiring fruit juice/mousse During the course students were asked to design process and object to acquire juice or mousse from a chosen fruit. The important part of design process was functional testing conducted at every design stage. Agnieszka Surma / tutor: Dominik Lisik

Martyna Gadziała / tutor: Franciszka Jagielak Natalia Cichowska / tutor: Franciszka Jagielak
MODELLING TECHNIQUES Topic: abstraction form The course is intended to give skills of making sketch models, reductional models and prototypes. The basics of material knowledge is also taught (cardboard, plywood, MDF, styrodur, PVC) as well as principles of the practical use of the before-mentioned, during the design process. Kaja Męclewska / tutor: Marcin Nowak
Patrycja Trzaska / tutor: Marcin Nowak
DRAWING FOR CONCEPT PRESENTATION Topic: introductory exercise, pen drive, toaster, radio alarm, stapler The course gives students the ability to create a quick visualisation of project concepts. Students learn the technique of drawing with ballpoint pen, crayon, marker and their combinations, followed by the course of retouch with the use of computer graphic software. Antoni Kwiatkowski / tutor: Marcin Nowak

Tomasz Różak / tutor: Marcin Nowak MANUALLY DRAWN PERSPECTIVE Topic: drawings: bookshelf, labyrinth, symetric shape The course teaches convention for imagining of 3D space on the two dimensional plane, based on drawing craft. The use of such skill may be: a concept communication, project tool, conception saving, designing of a form. The task standing in front of participants is to design a spatial shapes (while maintaining the initial requirements) followed by their imagining.
