September 2014 Danish Societies Dania & Dannebrog of California and Nevada www.danishsociety.com Email timh@danishsociety.com. Lodge Dania & Dannebrog s August has proved to be a very busy month for us. Saturday, August 2 nd we traveled to Modesto. Bob installed the officers of Bornholm #4. Mary Jo enjoyed a very nice visit with her Aunt Phyllis Allman from Laura #8 in San Jose. Thank you Bob and Liz Lacey for bringing her! We enjoyed another delicious lunch at Jacobs Fine Dining. We think their food gets better every year. Marge Scheuber did an excellent job on the beautiful table decorations. They contained information about the history of the Danish Lodge. Marge also did an awesome job with the raffle. Past s, Mel and Zena Lundberg sure were lucky! Sunday, August 3 rd, we traveled to Salinas for Freja #6 and Dana #5 joint installation. The room was a great size for our Marshals, Steen Skjellerup and Martha Nielsen to show off their floor work. They looked very professional and the installation went very smooth... almost perfect! The appetizers, lunch and dessert were tasty and the crepes were mouthwatering. The table decorations were very beautiful (thank you Heer ladies)! Thank you, also, for the decoration you gave us to keep as memory of our great time in Salinas. Saturday, August 9 th we traveled to Kastania Faelled in Petaluma. Bob had the honor of installing the officers of Sønderjylland #10. A special thanks to Vice Marshal Daniel Joensen, who served as my Marshal in Steen s absence. Daniel did a fantastic job! We are sure Daniel Joesen and Pam Kjar will do great as next year s Marshals. Lunch was delicious----danish open faced sandwiches and of course, Akvavit. Lots of nice gifts were raffled off. Luck continued to shine on Past s, Mel and Zena -- winning several of the raffle prizes. Again, thank you to Bornholm #14, Freja #6, Dana #15, and Sonderjylland #10 for being such gracious hosts and treating us so royally. We look forward to visiting your lodges in the future. TO DANNEBROG GENERAL FUND: TO DANNEBROG SCHOLARSHIP: TO DANIA DANNEBROG SENIOR ASSISTANCE FUND Branch Secretaries At our last Convention it was pointed out that for the Lodge to survive, in a manner that it is used to, more income was needed. Different methods of collecting per capita taxes were presented to the delegates to bring more funds into the Lodge. These suggestions were rejected due to promises from some of the Lodges to make sizeable donations to the Lodge. I would like to thank PGP Robert Sorensen, PGP Robert Lacey, GVP Danish Campers The Danish Campers will meet at Betabel RV Resort on Friday, September 26 th for an enjoyable, friend filled weekend. Betabel is located at 9664 Betabel Road, San Juan Bautista 95045, north of the historic town, and approximately 8 miles south of Gilroy. Did you know that Alfred Hitchcock s movie Vertigo was filmed at the Mission San Juan Bautista, and Saturday, the 27 th, is Vertigo Day at the SJB State Historic Park! Dannebrog History This is the beginning of a group of articles which will be appearing this year. Lodge Dannebrog will celebrate 100 years in 2015. As Historian, I am asking the assistance of all members of Dannebrog as well as those members who were formally members and are now members of Dania to please look through your photos, files, scrapbooks for any information regarding your local branch and let me know what you find. Local Branches Danmark No. 2 & Thyra No. 3 Meeting: 2 nd. Wednesday every month 7:30 PM Odd Fellows Building; 26 Seventh Street, San Francisco CA 94103 Danmark #2 Secretary Roger Gearhart E-mail ragearhart@comcast.net Thyra #3 Secretary Johanne Gade We enjoyed another great meeting with the ladies of Thyra #3 back from vacation. In fact, three of the ladies, Irene Simms, Eva Kristensen and Elizabeth Jensen all celebrated their birthdays and combined to serve a veritable feast. We enjoyed sandwiches, gourmet pizzas, salads, great hors d ouevres, and elegant deserts. It all went especially well with a beer or a glass of wine and coffee with the deserts. We had several visitors: Mary Esther Filiau was introduced by Irene---one Dannebrog Member-of-the-Year introducing another; Uffe Hellsten introduced Lars Christensen and Karl Bach. We look forward to having more new members soon. Kyle Gearhart now out of the US Army and studying in Georgia was reinstated to membership. Those missing out on the $220 Attendance Prize were Tom Jordan and Peter Allan Bauer; it will be a record high $240 at our next Thomas Martin and Jean Kjaer for their personal Donations. I also would like to thank Danneskold #17, Thor #5, Bornholm #14 and Danmark #2. Danmark # 2 did match the donations made by the other three Branches. In all a total of $10,200.00 was donated. Thank you all for your willingness to support the Lodge. Tim Heer Sr. Secretary With our group discount, the rate will be $38.70 per night, with no additional charge for pets. Please let me know as you re reading this if you re planning to attend, so I can be sure we have enough campers to qualify for the group reservation (510-278-9430). We ll also have the use of the clubhouse for our Friday wine and appetizers and Saturday night s potluck feast. We re looking forward to a great gathering on the 26 th. Happy trails to you, Pat and Greg I would like to borrow what you have and display it at the convention in Ferndale in 2015. I will see that you get everything back at the close of the convention. You can either bring it with you, or send it with a delegate, or make arrangements for me to get it there and back. You can contact me at 408-313-7235 or e-mail me at dws1929@gmail.com. We agreed to pay our Odd Fellows Hall rent two years in advance. And it was Nickel Beer Night. And when we counted the money, it seems that we must have consumed over 140 beers. More likely, someone overpaid. In any event, the funds were presented to the Flower Fund. The Membership Committee has announce the Bocce Ball gathering sponsored by Danmark #2 on September 13 in Livermore. More to follow. Page 2 of 6

Our next meeting will be Onsdag, September 10. We start gathering about 6:30 for a beverage and a social hour, a brief meeting at 7:30, then we get down to the serious business of having a good time. Friday every month at 7 PM, Odd Fellows Hall; 1300 Stardust Street Reno, NV 89503. Secretary: Sena Maria Freeman P.O. Box 4575, Sparks NV 89432; Anette Christensen, achristensen@medicine.nevada.edu Reno s August 1 st meeting was one of the smallest gatherings we have had in a long time! It was still very nice and there was 8 of us, so we fit perfectly around one table. I know that some lodges doesn t meet in the summertime, but the Reno lodges hold our meeting every first Friday of each month, no matter, if it falls on a holiday or how few people attend. This weekend was the Hot August Night event and that may have prevented some from coming? Normally we will mention, if we missed some of our members at our meetings, but this time it s easier to mention who was there. Palle Larsen, Knud Sørensen, Sena Marie Freeman, Ann Kathrine Sawyer, Ingrid Hedman, Eva Demosthenes, Paul Larson and Anette Christensen. We had a nice time, grilled some hotdogs and enjoyed some side dishes. Ingrid had made a wonderful apple cake for dessert. She also brought some fresh dill that we had with a salmon spread she made. It was so good and there was still dill leftover for us to take home. We skipped lightly over the meeting, but did agree to have a Harvest pot-luck for our September 5 th meeting. I know this is not fair to say, but I can t help it - when September comes around, it s almost Christmas? We have to start planning it soon, anyway. Sena Marie Freeman is off her writing duties for this month, but she will be back next month. Forgive me if I forgot something. We will add it to the next newsletter. I hope you are all having a wonderful summer and look forward to see you soon. Mange tak! Anette Christensen for Sena Marie Freeman. Page 4 of 6
