ECTP European Construction Technology Platform Matti Kokkala, VTT, Finland Nibcor Workshop, 15 16 Jan 2007 Helsingør, Denmark
European Technology Platforms - General Provide a framework for stakeholders, led by industry, to define research and development priorities, timeframes and action plans on a number of strategically important issues where achieving Europe's future growth, competitiveness and sustainability objectives is dependent upon major research and technological advances in the medium to long term Play a key role in ensuring an adequate focus of research funding on areas with a high degree of industrial relevance, by covering the whole economic value chain and by mobilising public authorities at national and regional levels No EU funding for operation (except for some special assignments) SEE: http://cordis.europa.eu/technology-platforms/ 2
European Construction Technology Platform Industrial driven platform to mobilise the construction sector, fully supported (but not funded ) by EC New strategies on research, development and innovation to improve competitiveness and satisfy the societal needs http://cordis.europa.eu/technology-platforms/ 3

ECTP Outputs Vision 2030 for the European construction sector, signed and committed to by leading representatives of major stakeholder groups (endorsed by the HLG on March 1, 2005). Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), outlining how the Vision 2030 will be achieved including roadmaps and strategies (endorsed by the HLG on November 22, 2005). Detailed Priorities to be implemented at short and medium terms in R&D programmes or schemes (FP7, Eranet, Eureka, National ones...) Promotion of project co-operation in various brokerage events in the future? 6

Technologies and Engineering for Innovative Added-value Services offered by SMEs in the Construction Sector Priorities were communicated to the Commission for the development of FP7 Work Programme 7
Joint Technology Initiatives E2B- Building Energy Efficiency (Acciona) Jules Verne- Underground Innovative Construction Technologies (Bouygues) 8
Criteria for Joint Technology Intiative The European Commission has set out an identification process for JTIs involving the following criteria: strategic importance of the topic and presence of a clear deliverable; existence of market failure; concrete evidence of European Community value added; evidence of substantial, long-term industry commitment; inadequacy of existing Community instruments. at the time of the FP7 proposals six areas were identified where a JTI could have particular relevance: hydrogen and fuel cells, aeronautics and air transport, innovative medicines, nano-electronics (ENIAC), embedded computing systems (ARTEMIS) and global monitoring for environment and security. 9
ECTP Output vs. Project Proposal The Vision and the Strategic Research Agenda provide examples for justification of proposed work when appropriate The network is available for finding partners for proposals Proposal evaluation process does not give any preference to the initiatives developed within ECTP => you can still win even if you have not participated in the work of ECTP Note! Competition is very tough (10% success rate?). Those have an excellent idea invite partners and develop the proposal in confidence. ECTP is not going to be informed about all plans. 10
