2 EU Horizon link to the European Technology Platform for Nanomedicine (ETP-N) - ETP-N: one of the 38 ETPs that are recognised in Horizon ETP-N gives advice to the EC on research & innovation priorities and policies, through Vision Paper (2005), Strategic Research and Agendas, Roadmaps, White Papers,.. - Encouraging industry participation in Horizon Fostering networking; 150 member organisations - Working Groups on priority areas - ETP-N: White paper "Contribution of Nanomedicine to H2020" - - Horizon 2020: ETP-N emphasis is on translation e.g. Translation Advisory Board, Pilot Manufacturing, NanoCharacterisation Lab Policy Research and

4 Benefits of the nano-approach being confirmed - - FP7 nanomedicine RTD has been mainly on feasibility and preclinical work; considerable EU expertise has been built-up. - - Focus has been on: Novel drug delivery methods / targeted nanopharmaceuticals - Ultra-sensitive diagnostic methods & improved medical imaging Biomaterials & regenerative medicine - Micro-nano-bio-systems (e.g. for intelligent implants) - Projects funded cover a wide range of diseases Policy Research and

5 Nanomedicine progression - - Common understanding between Nanotechnology- and Medical communities (role of CLINAM) - - Increased understanding of biological and cell molecular processes -> more effective RTD processes -> personalisation; - - Medical doctors getting interested in the nano-approach. Several nano-projects coordinated by MD Specialists (SaveMe, NAMDIATREAM, CosmoPHOS-nano, NANOCI); - Industrial interest is also strongly increasing. - - Novel nano-technological platforms will enable similar approaches to therapy and diagnostics of different diseases. 6 EU FP7/Horizon link to the European Technology Platform for Nanomedicine (ETP-N) - Successful translation of research results into medical products has been identified as one of the major challenges for the sector. - Major hurdles were identified between the Proof of Concept (PoC) (TRL4) - and the clinical PoC (TRL7), including difficulties of - - access to capital, - - up-scaling of manufacturing and characterisation, - - meeting regulatory requirements and clinical needs and - - reimbursement for innovative therapies from the public sector and health insurance companies. More than 700 industrial players and SMEs in Europe with a direct link or activities in the field of nanomedicine, together with nearly 1000 academic laboratories or research centres. 7 A new generation of research projects in Horizon Following strong progress of nanomedicine R&D in past ten years - Translational nanomedicine projects, with emphasis on pilot activities for robust manufacturing & characterisation of nano-medicines, late preclinical and clinical testing, on meeting regulatory aspects (EMA/FDA). Horizon 2020 provides opportunites for these pilot activities, clinical trials, and other support for translation. - Pre-clinical nanomedicine research can take place especially in the LEIT programme clinical research in the Health programme. - Call for Novel infrastructure activity for characterisation of nanomedicines in the Infrastructure programme. - Novel nanomedicine concepts can also be proposed, to the European Research Council (ERC), FETOpen, Marie-Curie Training Networks - Specific Actions for SME's - Access to Capital (with EIB) Policy Research and
