Introduction to ARTEMIS Strategic Reseach Agenda Road2CPS workshop, Paris June 24, 2015 Ad ten Berg
Embedded & Cyber- Physical Systems Sidestick LCD-Displays Autopilot, Auto-Throttle, Envelope Protection Increase of electronic systems, especially as Embedded Systems, is required for mastering complexity meeting environmental challenges competitiveness cost efficiency This impact will even increase!
Key messages Key messages Key messages ARTEMIS position on CPS innovation We believe that targeted investment in innovation in Embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems is crucial to support Europe s ambitions and ensure our #1 position in producing advanced complex and safety relevant products. ARTEMIS projects focus on creating Embedded CPS in key industrial areas (automotive, avionics, railways, automated systems). Partners in industry closely work together and realize state-of-the-art intelligent solutions supporting (future) market demand. Industry depends on CPS for high tech processes that speed up development, increase functionality and performance and ensure safety and security. Industry requires priority investment in CPS to ensure Europe s competitive position and generate jobs in CPS. Europe has ambitious industrial strategy and will double investment in DT from 5.5 billion to 11 billion to stay competitive in this market, creating 5% growth and jobs in DT. Private spending will double to 70 billion.
ARTEMIS-IA SRA INNOVATION STRATEGY To strengthen the application contexts, based upon exploitation of European strengths and opportunities by: Building on the leading positions where Europe is strong, in specific technologies and in various application domains, particularly for the safety critical high reliability real-time applications in the field of automotive, aeronautics, space, and health sectors. Creating new opportunities for Europe to be positioned at the forefront of new or emerging markets with high potential growth rates in the following domains: Smart Mobility, Smart Energy, Smart Society Smart Health, Smart Production
ARTEMIS ETP Main focus points are: Build a self-sustaining Innovation Environment for European leadership in Embedded & Cyber-Physical Systems. Full development of the innovation potential of SMEs in Embedded & Cyber-Physical Systems. Address European strategic priorities in addition to the individual interests of companies and countries, upstream and downstream. Strengthen European industry and address societal challenges (more info: High-Level Vision 2030 by ARTEMIS & ITEA). Aligning research agendas for Embedded & Cyber-Physical Systems. ARTEMIS-IA = the ARTEMIS European Technology Platform (ETP)
ARTEMIS SRA impact so far The ARTEMIS programme: 56 projects enabling the integration of software Defining the properties and the performance of products: Reliably, for certifiable Safety-Critical Systems Scalably, for IoT applications and more Cost-effectively, for competitive solutions on a global scale Including 3 major Innovation Pilots CRYSTAL Workflows and Tools for ultra-reliable applications while reducing system design and validation costs Arrowhead collaborative automation for efficient, flexible industry and rational energy use. EMC2 Embedded Multi-Core systems for mixed criticality applications, keeping European Electronic Systems industries in the lead 6

Cyber-Physical Systems Trends Five main converging innovation tracks Big Data Cloud CPS, Smart connected objects and IOT Robotics, Autonomous systems and automation Hyper connectivity, BB and wireless
SRA on CPS Challenges to meet Mechanics melting with ICT: Digitalisation Highly automated cars, aircrafts, production equipment Big data: Analysis and handling Involvement of human, user friendliness Remote diagnosis and service Transparency issue Education & training Cooperation models: Large SW companies ES/CPS users Transition from analog biz models to digital biz models 11
Investments in CPS Call for actions An increase of research in Embedded & Cyber-Physical Systems is required for: Mastering Complexity Meeting environmental Challenges Competitiveness of Europe Cost Efficiency European investment in CPS should increase by 100% over the coming years in order to safeguard the leading position of Europe. CPS are key to the future requirements of all industrial sectors. E.g for the automotive sector, where an increasing amount of electronic systems will lead to an entire system depending on embedded systems. We need to partner with related communities: e.g. IoT, factories of the future, high performance computing, NESSI, big data 12
Cyber-Physical Systems Impact on economy 13
Outline of current status related to CPS Importance of Digital Technology and software innovation quantified: - Global market represents 2600 B$, 44 million jobs - More than 1/3 of the growth of the world economy within the next five years is based on Digital Technology - Europe (member states) will double investment to 11 billion (which includes EU programs to stay competitive in this market (ref digital agenda for Europe), creating 5% growth and jobs. - There will be an equivalent increase in private spending from 35 billion to 70 billion Role of Embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems: - Electronic systems and their built in software continue to create more functionalities and become increasingly complex and interconnected - Better performance, increased safety, shorter time-to-market and cost management define competitiveness of European industry - CPS put more intelligence behind existing software, by creating a larger entity that manages the connection, communication and control of the physical world
Cyber-Physical Systems Digital Platforms Oettinger calls for new European Digital Platforms A step-up from Reference Technology Platforms (RTP) to Digital Platforms? Platforms on which value is created on and across levels: Well-being, home, cars (user perspective) Analytics, design & simulation Cloud and web applications (free from vendor-lock-in) Middleware: embedded OSs, IoT, autonomous systems building blocks, Systems of Systems, security frameworks,
