Fanfare SUMMER TERM 2016 MK Music Centre Welcome to the start of the Summer Term. Music Centre Ensembles Please help us to invoice you correctly. You must let us know before the end of THIS term if you want your child to stop being in an Ensemble next term. They run a monthly Classical Music group and have asked if any of our students could provide a short, 15 minute programme at about 7pm in the evening, either during the week or at the weekend. This could be ideal exam preparation! Expenses are available. If you are interested, please contact david.rose2@milton-keynes.gov.uk who will put you in touch with the organiser at the complex.

Who are we? The Milton Keynes Music Co-operative is a not-for-profit organisation set up and run by teachers who were part of the Milton Keynes Music Service. All the teachers within the Co-operative have full CRB/DBS disclosures and are highly qualified and experienced instrumental teachers who will take part in regular CPD. What do we do? We teach high quality individual and small group instrumental lessons. We will help to deliver the National Music Plan, offering value for money whilst delivering a quality service. We will be working in collaboration with Milton Keynes Music Faculty, Milton Keynes Council and Milton Keynes Music Hub. How does it work? Instrumental lessons with Co-operative teachers began in the summer term 2014. They take place over 34 weeks of the year in the same way as they did with the Music Faculty, although the invoice will now come from the Milton Keynes Co-operative. Next Steps If you would like to discuss your requirements with a Co-operative representative please email mkmusiccoop@gmail.com and a representative will get back to you. For more information please visit www.mkmusiccoop.com New Qualification for Music Teachers and Educators The Certificate for Music Educators (CME) is a new QCF Level 4 course designed by Trinity College London and we re pleased to say that that the Music Faculty has been validated by Trinity College as a centre to run the course. Working with Gary Spruce from the OU we have devised a set of modules that take learners through the learning objectives of the course and we plan to start our first tranche of learners within the next few weeks. There are currently six learners on our course with space for more. The course is designed for class and instrumental teachers as well as those working with young people in the informal sector and offers support to those that wish to develop their understanding of the art and science of teaching. If you are interested in finding out more about the course you can look up details on the website at http://www.miltonkeynes.gov.uk/schools-and-lifelong-learning/music-facultycommunity-learning-mk

MK Youth Brass at National Brass Band Championships Youth Brass at the 2016 Championships Our Youth Brass performed at the National Youth Brass Band Championships last weekend and received a Bronze Award. Their programme consisted of four pieces, The Bandwagon by Philip Sparke, Can t Take My Eyes Off You, a trombone solo beautifully played by James Taylor, a lovely setting of a piece by John Rutter entitled Gaelic Blessing and the test piece Funk Engine by a young Welsh composer called Ryan Howells. Among the positive comments from the two adjudicators were, A balanced ensemble sound, A performance with many fine musical moments, The musical shape of the pieces was impressive. David Rose has taken the band for the past 8 years but has decided to step down to look at other ensembles to work with. Music Centre is looking for a new conductor and, if you know of anyone that is interested, please do let them know. Below is a copy of the advert. Milton Keynes Youth Brass Band is looking for a new conductor from September 2016. Part of MK Music Centre, this busy and talented group of young musicians between the ages of 11-18 regularly play in the local community and at national events. Rehearsals are on a Saturday morning during term-time and, as well as the successful candidate taking this group, there may be the opportunity to lead other groups and develop a teaching profile across the area. The arrangement is on a self-employed basis and discussions will take place with the successful applicant about appropriate remuneration. To express an interest, please email the head of Milton Keynes Music Centre, Sue Wakley at sue.wakley@milton-keynes.gov.uk.

MK Music Hub As lead organisation for the MK Music Hub the Music Faculty is preparing a survey to send to all schools. This survey provides the Hub with information to send to the Arts Council on the impact that the Hub has on music education across MK. This information is sent on to the Department for Education. If you work in schools, do look out for this survey. Schools are being sent hard and electronic copies and the deadline for returns is Friday 8th July 2016. London Marathon - 2016 Congratulations to David Rose in completing the London Marathon in a time of 3 hours, 37 minutes and 57 seconds! Running in cool and mainly dry conditions. David says, I have really enjoyed the journey these past four months. There is a certain comradeship and friendship within the running community that is so similar to making music with others - only more painful! Thank you to everyone that has supported me in this adventure and, in particular, to those that have donated money or helped at various events and concerts to help me raise over 4500 for Willen Hospice If you would like to donate to Willen Hospice you can still do so at : www.justgiving.com/david-rose27

Off to university this year? Interested in earning some extra cash? If you re leaving Music Centre at the end of this school year to go to university, would you be interested in music exam stewarding work? Ex-Music Centre students make the best stewards - they know all about exams and know exactly how the candidates feel! The ABRSM and Trinity exams usually take place towards the end of a school term and often coincide with university holidays. A typical day usually starts at 8.30am and ends around 4.30pm. You would be responsible for assisting the examiner, meeting and greeting candidates and their parents or teachers, checking all the details are correct, ushering them to and from the waiting room, warm-up room and exam room. For this Trinity pay 6.50 per hour and ABRSM pay 53 per day or 26.50 for half a day. Stewarding days are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Once we know the dates of the exams, we email out to everyone on the stewarding list and ask them to let us know which of the dates, if any, they would like to do. We then allocate stewards to dates and advise you which days you ll be doing. We try to be fair and make sure that everyone who wants to steward gets a few days at least. If you re interested in joining our stewarding list or you d like some more information please email Julie Barefoot at Julie.barefoot@milton-keynes.gov.uk. We look forward to hearing from you. Auditions for Orchestra places from September 2016 Auditions will be held for the following groups: Intermediate Orchestra String Orchestra Youth Orchestra Letters will be handed out at groups later in the term with more information regarding dates etc.

This will ask you to complete a form letting us know that your child is committed to attending both the event and rehearsals this term, including a short rehearsal during the day on 17 July. In order to enable groups to perform at their best every student needs to be attending rehearsals and practising their parts. We also need confirmation of attendance so that we can accurately let the theatre know how many students will be attending on the evening. They have a strict signing in and out policy which we have to adhere to. Once you receive it, please return the form to your conductor or the Music Faculty office as soon as possible and before the deadline given. The following groups will be performing: Beginner Strings Percussion Workshop Flute Ensemble Intermediate Orchestra Intermediate Choir Youth Brass Rock School Junior Strings Senior Percussion String Quartet (Euan s Group) Junior Choir Clarinet Ensemble Double Reed Ensemble Youth Orchestra
