Specialist Diploma in Supply Chain Management 9 h Intake Introduction Supply chain management is a critical function in any business today. An effective supply chain management has profound effect on the success and profitability of a company. The accelerated growth of international trade, globalisation and the ever more competitive environment has put supply chain management in the forefront. Many businesses are looking to supply chain for cost advantage as well as being a service differentiator and competitive edge. The 300-hour programme is intended to provide a good understanding of supply chain management and its roles in international business and logistics. It enables participants to apply their knowledge and analytical skills learnt in their workplace through project work and assignments. The programme will adopt a practical approach to enhance participants understanding of various key components of business logistics and supply chain management. Programme Objectives (i) To provide participants a good understanding of the total supply chain value with focus on the application of various supply chain management processes and integration of various elements of SCM. (ii) To provide participants an overview on the latest technology deployment in SCM including exposure to ERP tools to achieve high SCM service delivery and monitoring (iii) To assist participants in enhancing their business management capability and to add value to their career development. Applicants who do not meet the above admission requirement, but with significant supervisory / managerial experience in a relevant industry may be considered on a case-by-case basis. ANNEX A MODULE SYNOPSES BM1770 - Essentials of Supply Chain Management (45 Hours) This is an introductory module to provide course participants with an overview of the latest practices in business logistics & global management of supply chains. It examines the trends and development of international logistics & global supply chain management, including global outsourcing, integrated logistics services, 3PL and 4PL etc., and the challenges to effective logistics & supply chain management, including design and implementation of systems for business logistics, variability, organizational silos, the Bullwhip effect and tradeoffs. Analyse the role and activities of those involved in managing corporate supply chains. Case studies will be widely used. BM1773 Info-communication Technology in E-Supply Chain Management (45 hours) Provides participants with an understanding of how info-communication technology and Internet have changed traditional supply chains and the major business benefits from Internet enabled supply chain flows. Case study analysis on strategic applications of info-comm technology, use of e-commerce or internet enabled global supply chain operations and management by companies will be discussed intensively. Emergence web-services, such as XML, SOAP, UDDI, WSDL and their applications in a vertical market will also be covered. BM1774 Global Supply Chain Management (45 hours) This module examines supply chain management from a regional and international perspective, its challenges and opportunities as well as future trends. Collaborative commerce, global supply chain management and potential future development in selected industries will also be covered. Case studies will be used to enhance better and practical understanding of supply chain management. BM1775 Integrated Supply Chain Management Project (75 hours) This is a project based integrated modules, which provides participants an opportunity to integrate supply chain strategies synthesizing supply chain management, production, logistics and enterprise systems, and aligning the strategies with supply chain responsiveness, efficiency and cost savings. Participants work in teams and apply project selection and planning methods to plan a new SCM process, quality improvement, or process re-engineering or enhancement. There will be taught component to cover topics such as value chain analysis and creation, process mapping, supply chain strategy options and an introduction on project management. BM1776 - Inventory and Cost Management (45 hours) This module introduces the various costing and economic concepts relating to supply chain management. It covers the use of absorption; variable, total cost of ownership as well as activity based costing methodology used in the supply chain context. It will also cover topics such as performance, quality and productivity management, as well as the rationales behind outsourcing decisions in the supply chain. A inventory are invariably one of the most costly operating cost in the supply chain, this module will also covers inventory management that will include topics such as inventory systems, inventory control, and inventory protection.

BM1777 - International Freight Management and International Trade Law (45 hours) This module offers a thorough understanding of Freight and Distribution management and the international trade law. It is structured into three parts namely Freight Management, Distribution Management and International trade law. The first part of the module (Freight Management) provides students with basic concepts of transportation and cover topics like: modes of transportation, international and domestic transportation documentation (Bill of Lading, Freight Bill and Freight Claim), carrier negotiation, Freight pricing methodology, Incoterms and transportation strategies. The second part (Distribution Management) includes topics: warehouse management, distribution models, logistics distribution software, 3 rd & 4 th party logistics service provider. The last part of the module covers elementary maritime law and international trade law that impact the supply chain operations. Topics covered include: policies on competition, pricing and contracts, and the reasons for conflicts leading to disputes, distribution of risk and liabilities.
