ISM academic program MBA General Management

Dortmund Excellent results Trendence Graduate Barometer, June 2012 ISM students have a particularly high opinion of the support they receive from lecturers and professors, and of the international orientation of the teaching provided. These are the findings of the independent Trendence Graduate Barometer 2012. In these two categories, both the ISM s Dortmund and Frankfurt/Main campuses were among the highest scoring institutes in a survey comparing some 100 universities across Germany. The ISM s Dortmund Campus ranked fourth. Students at the ISM in Frankfurt/Main also gave very good scores for the international orientation of their teaching, which meant that the campus came second nationwide in this comparison. And both campuses garnered positive responses for the interaction with the business community and for the practical orientation of the teaching, ranking fifth in each case. The Universum Student Survey, June 2012 ISM students value the opportunity to study abroad, the practical orientation of the teaching and the close relationship between teaching staff and students at their university. These are the findings of the 2012 Student Survey conducted by the independent consultancy firm Universum. The ISM thus once again ranks among the very best institutions in Germany. Around 80% of students at every ISM campus are satisfied or even very satisfied with their university. Students gave a particularly positive rating to the close relationship between lecturers and students and to the opportunity to spend a semester abroad. 2

Furthermore, prerequisites for admission are 3 10 years work experience, an adequate level of English language proficiency (TOEFL) as well as the successful completion of a personal interview. 5

Success factors International Orientation Like all ISM study programs, this part-time degree program reflects the ISM s international focus. More than 25 percent of the MBA General Management program is offered abroad, including four study modules at renowned partner universities in the USA, in Brussels, India and Hong Kong. Students are immersed in the respective culture and deepen their industry knowledge in an international context. At the same time, participants of the MBA program learn to engage in different work and communication styles as well as learning how to successfully work together to achieve their aims. Courses are taught in English. In addition to the four study modules abroad, the program includes English lectures by experts from prestigious international universities. Practical Orientation The MBA program is characterized by a consequent orientation on meeting the demands of the practical business world. Group and project work form an integral part of the program. Moreover, experts from the field hold lectures on a regular basis. The courses are designed for small groups so that theoretical knowledge can immediately be applied to business situations in the companies where the program participants are employed. The MBA General Management program ends with a practically oriented master thesis that can be written within the students company of employment. Personal Atmosphere About 15 students are admitted each semester. The small class size allows instructors to give MBA students individual attention and forms the groundwork for an interactive classroom environment. Unresolved questions and problems can be individually clarified and students also profit outside of lessons from the ISM s open-door policy. Lecturers are not only available during office hours but also after the program has ended. Moreover, teamwork among students is promoted in all courses through regular group work. The MBA General Management program is accredited by the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA) for the campuses in Dortmund and Munich. The accreditation for the Hamburg Campus is planned. 6

Professional, Social Skills and Individual Coaching The MBA program is designed to provide students with extensive professional knowledge within a short period of time. One highlight is the individual coaching of every participant. Students receive professional and personal coaching support throughout the program. They delve further into themselves to develop a framework for both individual growth and leader ship skills. The coaching program also includes a potential analysis, career counseling and personality development. Furthermore, students also practice soft skills such as communication and negotiation techniques. This helps to perfect presentation techniques and to develop argumentation skills and negotiating strategies. Further sessions specifically deal with leadership, motivation and change management as well as intercultural management. Participants of the program are also sensitized to ethical questions and learn to apply these to concrete company problems. Extra-occupational and Compact The MBA General Management is offered as a part-time, extra-occupational program. It is directed at university graduates with a degree other than in business management who require business know-how for their further career development. Additionally, business economists are able to broaden their knowledge in international management. The program is structured in a series of block seminars 75 percent of which take place at the Dortmund or Munich campuses. The remaining 25 percent are taught in the USA, in Brussels, Hong Kong and India. The courses can be attended while continuing to work in cooperation with the student s employer or by claiming the maximum of 28 vacation days per year. 7
