The project site was located on the periphery of the city of Ankara, distant from the city center. The area was never planned and was surrounded by squatter houses. The question was to provide a nucleus of transformation in this neighborhood to make it part of the metropolitan city life. A semi-permeable green zone that prepares the transition from the residential area to the recreational area demarcates the site. The recreational facilities are grouped in a circular uniform paved area. Enclosed spaces were hidden beneath the play area and the overall impression of the complex was one of a large open area within the greenery. Site Plan and Landscape Project 1

The project description imposed strict regulations in terms of landscaping, the massing, and the entry and exist points to the site. The participants were asked to relate and not dominate the existing structure on the national assembly campus. The program was complex including public and semi-public domains. The national assembly campus design imposed formal and aesthetic restrictions as well. In our design we propose to formally and spatially relate the three functions through similar massing strategies and outdoor plazas. 4 Site Plan

Site Plan gaziemir municipal building Gaziemir-İzmir 2009-2010 Coordinator A project prepared for the Gaziemir Municipality Team: Virginia Thompson Couch, Kamal Mohammed, Selin Öğütçü, Türkan Özbalta Drawings by Onur Mercan, Onur Çakıroğlu Total area: 100,000 sq f Gaziemir is a district in İzmir, Turkey. The existing municipal building was located on a site near the Gaziemir square and on the main street of the town; yet, the building is no more adequate to serve the fast growing town of Gaziemir. The municipality asked us to propose a scheme in which currently dispersed departments of the municipality will work under the same roof and with utmost transparency. The site included a number of pine trees which the team decided to keep in the new proposal. The office design maximizes the use of natural light and transparency. Site Plan and Landscape Project 7

Function diagram(left) and ori entation diagram(right) gaziemir city square Gaziemir-İzmir 2009-2010 Coordinator and member of the design team A project prepared for the Gaziemir Municipality Team: Fehmi Doğan, Erdem Erten, Adile Avar, Sarp Tunçoku, Koray Velibeyoğlu Drawings by Nabi Hamdi Mortan, Mehmet Ali Yalçın Total area: 300,000 sq f (enclosed space); 80,000 sq f (open space) The town of Gaziemir in İzmir is one of the fastest growing areas in the city. The town used to be a small-size village back in the 1960s. Now, it is home to the international airport of İzmir, to the only free-trade zone in the region, and will soon house an international fair ground. The current city square needed to be refurbished according to the changing profile of the town. The site included two registered buildings and has historically been the center of the town with several cafés serving mainly the local male population. In our proposal, we decided to increase the amount of open spaces at different levels to maximize the outdoor space use. We proposed a public plaza in front of the building complex, a courtyard around one of the registered buildings, and a small garden next to the other. The plaza and the courtyard were bounded by a series of functions enhancing the centrality of the site. These functions included a wedding hall, shops of different size, offices, a hotel, and apartments for the current property owners. Aerial view 9
