THE SAFETY CORNER By Tom Anys Respecting Your Co-Rider By Mike Stiger Wing World Magazine Nov 2009 Have you ever looked at things from a Co-Rider s point of view? Riders imagine this: You re confined to a rear seat, your forward vision is obscured, traffic conflicts all around you, and you re completely helpless to do anything about it. Most Riders would find this to be a very uncomfortable situation to be in. However, this is the reality of the Co-Rider. They feel that shaky, leaning stop from you not squaring the handlebars and looking ahead They hear the scrape from below when you brake in the curve. They feel that sudden steering input because you weren t correctly scanning the road ahead, which would have given you time to smoothly avoid the debris in the road. Or, my personal favorite, you have mechanical problems on the road that could have been avoided with a good pre-ride check, and they somehow get part of the blame. In fact, the Co-Rider are the Brave Ones. Experience what it is like by being one yourself. Have an I Do Too ride with your chapter. This is where a group of Riders get together and take turns being the Co-Rider on the back of someone else s bike. It s a lot of fun and very educational. It s true, Riders make the worst Co-Riders. There is a quote from Pete Woodruff, Co-Riders are the bravest Members in our Association; 83% of them ride behind untrained motorcyclist. The Rider Education database statistics reflect this fact: Around 34% of our membership participates in the Levels Program; of those, 50% are at Level 1. That means only 17% of GWRRA Membership has documented that they have taken a Rider Course. Being an average Rider isn t good enough when you have a Co-Rider onboard. You need to give them the utmost respect and strive to be the best you can be.
