IMPERIAL ROME - 84 Per Person Thursday, July 10, 2008 8:30 AM 12:15 PM It is said that when the Colosseum falls, Rome will fall...and the world will follow. This symbol of the eternity of Rome, the grandest and most celebrated of all its monuments, was completed in 80 A.D. and is a logical starting off point for a step back in time to Ancient Rome. The Colosseum still remains a symbol of the grandeur of Rome. The Palatine, adjacent to the Colosseum and Roman Forum, is where Rome began. Its Latin name is the source of the word "palace. In fact, great men lived on this regal hill and the emperors of Rome built their palaces here, turning the hill into an imperial preserve. It also had the first botanical gardens in the world. See the impressive stadium, the view from the terrace of the Palace of Septimius Severus, and the remains of the Farnese Gardens at the top of another superb panorama of the nearby Forum. In 1536, Michelangelo designed the Piazza Del Campidoglio to crown the Capitoline, the smallest of Ancient Rome s seven hills, but the most important since it was the seat of power. From the busy Piazza Aracoeli, you will mount graciously sloping stairs and step off into the sudden hush of his geometrically delineated piazza, with its three low and harmonious buildings. This was Rome s first planned piazza. The impressive Teatro Marcello was started by Julius Caesar and finished by Augustus. In this auditorium, Greek-style dramas were presented during the religious holidays. It could hold 14,000 spectators in a 150 yard semi-circular seating area. In the 12 th century, it was incorporated into a fortress, a palace in the 16 th century, and today - opulent apartments in this ancient construction. 08:15 AM Meet promptly in Hilton Cavalieri Hotel lobby 08:30 AM Depart for Imperial Rome Tour 09:00 AM Arrival at Colle Oppio 09:15 AM Guided visit of the Coliseum (you will get to skip the line) 10:15 AM Short walk to Imperial Forums Guided visit of the Forums 11:00 AM Tour of Piazza Del Campidoglio including historical descriptions and view of breathtaking square 11:30 AM Walk to Marcello Theatre 12:15 PM Return transfer to Hotel (If you would like to remain in the area, you might want to take a short walk to TAVERNA DEGLI AMICI restaurant in Piazza Margara for lunch on own. VATICAN MUSEUM AND THE SISTINE CHAPEL - 66 Per Person Friday, July 11, 2008 7:30 AM 12:15 PM When In Rome, Do As The Romans Do With its own head of state (the Pope), postal service, currency, media, train station, army and tourist office, the Vatican City is pretty selfsufficient. Its components include St Peter s Basilica & Piazza and a multitude of museums and apartments. The most famous church in Christendom, St Peter s, is a triumph of High Renaissance and Baroque genius. The first church was built here in 326 AD to commemorate the site of St. Peter s martyrdom and burial - Nero s Circo Vaticano. This church, begun by Constantine, was demolished in the first years of the 16 th century, and many great works of art were lost as a result. The magnificent structure we see today took a total of 150 years to build. Michelangelo is the name most closely associated with the building, who took over the project in 1547 at the age of 72 to partially design the dome. Bramante was responsible for the ingeniously embracing arms of the piazza which, along with the dome, dominate the exterior view. The Vatican Museums contain an incredible collection of treasures Egyptian pieces, Greek and Roman antiquities, tapestries, maps, apartments painted by Raphael, the Borgia Apartments and, of course, Michelangelo s Sistine Chapel, famous the world over for its magnificent frescoed ceiling. 07:15 AM Meet promptly in Hilton Cavalieri Hotel lobby 07:30 AM Depart for Vatican Tour 08:15 AM Fifteen minute walk from parking area to Vatican 09:00 AM Guided visit of Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel (you will enter through the group line, there may be a short wait) 10:45 AM Tour of St. Peter s Basilica 11:45 AM Historical description of the square and time for photos 12:00 PM Fifteen minute walk from Vatican to the Motorcoach 12:15 PM Return transfer to Hotel (If you would like to remain in the area, you might want to walk to Ristro restaurant, a short walk from the Vatican, for lunch on own.
