The tour starts with a guided city walk from the hotel to the center of Vienna. A professional guide will show you some of Vienna s most famous sights located in the city center, including: Schwedenplatz Danube Channel, Kärntner Straße Shopping street, Albertina, Vienna State Opera, and many more. This tour also includes an interior visit of St. Stephen s Cathedral or Old Steve, as it s known. The cathedral is a dominate feature of the skyline, the tallest point in Vienna. This 12th century Gothic masterpiece is a must-see. The walking tour will finish with a visit to one of the famous coffee houses in Vienna. The Viennese café, a typical institution of Vienna, still plays an important role in Viennese culture and tradition. Unlike some other café traditions from around the world, it is completely normal for a customer to linger alone or with company for hours and study the omnipresent newspaper or have long chats. Along with coffee, the waiter will serve an obligatory glass of cold tap water. 3 ON THE DANUBE, WACHAU VALLEY TOUR TUESDAY, JULY 9, 2013 Register for this tour by June 13! Wachau Dürnstein Abbey of Melk This excursion takes you to the Wachau Valley, often described as Austria's most beautiful 35 km. Located along the banks of the Danube between Melk and Krems, the Wachau is surely one of the most enchanting riverscapes in Europe, framed by soft hills and terraces of wine and fruit plantations. At our first stop, we ll enjoy a private guided tour of the Benedictine Abbey of Melk, which is among the world s most famous monastic sites. Situated on a plateau overseeing the Danube, this 11th century Baroque monument is a perfect example of harmony between architecture and landscape. In Emmersdorf, we will stop for a traditional Viennese lunch, followed by a boat ride on the Danube to Dürnstein. Dürnstein is considered one of the prettiest towns in the Wachau. We ll take a tour of the town and then visit a traditional winery in Dürnstein where we ll taste three different locally produced wines. Time permitting, you can also explore this quaint town on your own. Sisi Museum Imperial Apartments Karlsplatz The beautiful and celebrated Empress Elisabeth, Sisi, of Austria, wife of Emperor Francis Joseph, has long been a cult figure. Now, you can see Vienna how Sisi saw and experienced Vienna. During a leisurely walk to the Sisi Museum, your guide will share anecdotes of Emperor Francis Joseph and Sisi including stories about the Habsburgs unusual burial ceremonies and much more. In an impressively staged exhibition, the Sisi Museum seeks to give you an understanding of the myths and reality surrounding the figure of Empress Sisi. In six rooms you ll explore the life and complex personality of the famous empress in an exhibition free from the usual clichés associated with Sisi. Her private life is at the center of the exhibition including her rebellion against court ceremony, escape into a beauty cult, and obsession with being slim, athletic, and poetic. You ll learn about her carefree time as a young girl in Bavaria, the surprising engagement with the Austrian emperor, and her assassination in 1898 in Geneva. The museum has many originals on exhibits (robes, personal belongings, jewelry, etc.). Our visit also includes the Imperial Apartments, as well as the Imperial Silver Collection, with its original dinner service, and gold and silver table decorations from the Imperial court. Here you ll get a good impression of the daily life of the empire. On the return to the hotel, you ll pass by Vienna s famous sights in the city center such as the Imperial Palace, Spanish Riding School, Sisi museum, Heldenplatz, Naschmarkt, Karlsplatz, and Schwarzenbergplatz. A special highlight on this city tour will be a walk through Naschmarkt. Vienna s best-known market has around 120 market stands and restaurants offering a colorful culinary array, ranging from Viennese to Indian, from Vietnamese to Italian foods. The Naschmarkt has developed into a meeting point for young and old. Demel Coffeehouse Professional Bakery Demel Sacher Cake Empress Sisi liked to indulge in the sweets that were made at the Imperial and Royal Court Confectionary Bakery Ch. Demel s Sons, and you will, too. After a short walk through the city center you will start with a visit to the Demel Museum in the subsurface of the confectionary. Here you can get insight into the tradition of Demel with artifacts about the history of the Imperial chocolate-making bakery. Inspired by the masterpieces of sugar, chocolate, and marzipan, you will decorate your own Demel-Sacher cake with help from a professional confectioner. While you wait for your cake to be wrapped for take away, you will enjoy a traditional Demel Jause (cold snack) with a piece of cake and a hot drink in one of Demel s private rooms. Pay special attention to how servers address you in the third person ("He/She wishes"). This is the historical polite form of address in German.
