1 GENERAL INFORMATION
2 Welcome in Rome! Here below you will find information about the logistic aspects of the Conference and the main extra activities planned for you. We also provide you some useful advices to best enjoy your stay in Rome. Rome wasn t built in a day and seeing and experiencing all its attractions and offerings in a few days is not easy. The best way to get to know the Eternal City is probably on foot but you can move longer distances by taxi, underground, suburban trains and buses. Walking in Rome is indeed the best way to see all the sights and follow the tourist trail. Consider that Rome is often congested with traffic, which makes the exercise of walking an easier option, when reached the city center. However, remember that Rome develops on seven hills and many are the cobbled roads with a plenty of ups and downs; thus it is wise to invest in shoes that are comfortable! Another important (a bit ironic) advice is to be careful while crossing the streets. Some Italian drivers perceive the pedestrian stripes somehow as a simple suggestion. Don t expect traffic to slow for you while you stand at the side of the road, looking hopeful. You ll be there for hours! Wait for a small break in traffic, show no fear, and just start walking. Finally, if you will happen to fall in love with Rome, make sure you visited and threw a coin in the Trevi Fountain before leaving: this will ensure you to return again! 6 Visiting Rome PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION Rome has an integrated public transportation system, which includes buses, undergrounds, trams and a suburban train network. There are two underground lines, A and B. Both lines run from Sunday to Thursday from 5:30 am to 11:30 pm, and until 1:30 am on Friday and Saturday. Both lines intersect at Termini Station. The ATAC local buses serve the city center and most nearby suburbs. From 12:00 am (midnight) until 6:00 am there are special Night Lines which cover different areas of the city and run approximately every 20 minutes. Fares - There is a single fare structure and ticketing system allowing you to travel on buses, trams, trains and the metro with the same ticket. There are basically four types of tickets you could be interested in: 1. BIT - Integrated Single Ticket - costs 1,50 euro and can be used on all buses, undergrounds and trams in Rome. This ticket allows 100 minutes of travel after the initial validation on the buses and trams and only for 1 ride on the underground or 1 ride on an urban train; 2. BIG - Integrated Daily Ticket - costs 6 euros and is a good deal if you're planning a lot of sightseeing. The day pass can be used for unlimited rides until midnight on the day on which the ticket is validated. It is accepted on ATAC buses and trams, the underground, urban trains and regional trains in the city limits; 3. BTI - Integrated Touristic Ticket - costs 16,50 euros and allows use of all buses, undergrounds, city trains, regional trains and trams in Rome for 3 days including the day of validation. 4. CIS - Integrated Weekly Pass - The CIS ticket costs 24 euros and can be used for 7 days. It is basically a weekly version of the BIG ticket above. Where to purchase the tickets Tickets may be purchased at tobacconists and newsstands, from vending machines at the train stations and in the underground stations. For additional information and to download maps of the underground and bus networks, please visit also: SPECIAL TOUR SERVICES There are special tours organized by the Conference Agency, ReTravel, such as Ancient Rome & Colosseum, Romantic Rome - Trevi Fountain & The Spanish Steps, Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica, Trastevere District - Villa Farnesina - the Jewish Ghetto. The meeting point is at the Conference Venue. Please ask for further information at the ReTravel desk or visit: Contact persons: Claudia Portese - Luisa Cuomo Direct phone number: +39 (0) Direct fax number: +39 (0) address: [email protected] to catch the gist of Rome, you can also opt for: The 110 Open Tourist Bus: begins at Termini Station (the main Railroad Station) and goes to all the major historical and artistic sights of the city giving passengers a unique, spectacular view of the city as it passes close by the main archaeological sites and monuments such as the Colosseum, Bocca della Verità, Trevi Fountain, St. Peters & Ara Pacis. It allows you to hop on/off at any of the stops. It operates between 8:30 am and 7:00 pm. The ticket can be purchased on the bus, costs 20 euros (18 euros for those over 65) and is valid for 48 hours. The Archeobus: begins at Termini Station and travels through the center of Rome and then along the Park of Via Appia Antica. It operates between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm. The ticket can be purchased on the bus, costs 12 euros and is valid for 48 hours. By purchasing tickets for both buses, there is a special reduced rate ticket for 25 euros. Both of these tour lines offer discount tickets to many Rome museums. TAXI Taxis are nearly impossible hail on the street; you ll need to call one of the radio dispatch centres (+ 39 (0)6 3570, + 39 (0)6 6645,) or find a taxi stand, widely diffused in the city center. There s a taxi stand also in front of the main entrance of the Università Cattolica Campus ( Largo Gemelli - 200mt from Largo F. Vito). Registered taxis are all white and have a taxi sign on the roof of the car as well as their license number inside the car and a meter. In every official taxi there is a card that explains - in English - the extra charges for the call at the radio dispatch centres, the luggage, late-night travel, Sunday and holiday travel, and airport journeys. Remember that, if you call a radiotaxi by phone, the meter will be switched on from the point of the taxi departing (for a maximum of 6 euros). Every time you enter a taxi, make always sure the meter is switched on. In Rome, like in many big cities, you must be careful of unlicensed and illegal taxi drivers who approach tourists at the train station or at the airport. Termini train station: taxi departing from there will charge an extra 2 euros. 6
7 Other useful information RESTAURANTS A Trattoria has usually a more casual atmosphere, and it is specialized on traditional and local food. A Ristorante generally pays more attention to furnishings, ambience, and it proposes a more varied (but less local) menu. As regards the bill, Italian restaurants include a cover charge, usually 1-3 euros for the table setting, and tips are not compulsory. Anyway if you want to leave a tip consider that a 10% of the entire price is considered a very generous deed. SHOPPING Opening hours: shops in Rome usually open at 9:00 am 1:00 pm and 3:30 pm 7:30 pm (4:00 pm - 8:00 pm in Summer), except on Sundays and Monday mornings. Grocery shops also close on Thursday afternoons. Some bookshops (where people often met) and some clothes shops (around Campo dei Fiori, for example) open on Sundays, 10:00 am or 3:00-7:00 pm. The area nearby Piazza di Spagna (A line stop Spagna ) is where to find the boutiques (for suits, jewellery, shoes, etc.): most famous fashion brand shops, such as Prada, Valentino, Gucci, Fendi, Missoni, Armani and other contemporary designers and stylists are located in the surroundings. Antiques shops and art galleries for collectors, professionals or amateurs, are located in via Margutta.
