YOUR ITINERARY Day 1: Board Your Overnight Flight to Berlin! Day 2: Berlin Wittenberg Arrive in Berlin and Transfer to Wittenberg Arrive in Wittenberg, where Martin Luther lived and preached. The Protestant Reformation began here on October 31, 1517, when he nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church. Overnight in the Wittenberg Region Day 3: Wittenberg Guided Sightseeing of Wittenberg Travel to Wittenberg, where a local guide will take you around this beautiful city. Although the city only has a population of 50,000, it has played a major role in the history of Christianity. Learn about the ties that Wittenberg has with Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation as you walk through the city. Visit the Schlosskirche Built originally in the fifteenth century and rebuilt in the nineteenth, this church houses the graves of both Luther and Melanchthon. It was here that one of history's most defining moments occurred when Luther nailed his Ninety Five Theses to the door in 1517. Today, the nineteenth century bronze doors bear the Latin text of Luther's theses. Visit the Luther House Trace the 95 Theses' journey back to the door they were written behind on a visit to Luther's home. Located in the monastery where he studied and eventually lived out his adult life, the home doubles as a museum. Inside you'll get to see the world's most impressive collection of German Reformation artifacts, including Luther's robe, a preserved lecture hall and dozens of first edition books. Visit the Melanchthon House Enter the Renaissance mansion of Philipp Melanchthon, the Reformation's greatest scholar and Luther's greatest collaborator. Timeless façades guard an interior that are the academic counterpart to Luther's monastic quarters-complete with one-of-a-kind manuscripts and artifacts. Visit the Luther Garden Since 2008, the Lutheran World Foundation in Geneva has been planting 500 trees from all over the world as a living tribute to the Reformation's quincentennial anniversary. This massive public garden is a remarkable culmination of theology, history and community that is expected to grow well beyond Wittenberg city limits. Overnight in the Wittenberg Region Day 4: Eisleben Leipzig Transfer to Leipzig via a Guided Sightseeing of Eisleben Head to nearby Eisleben, Luther's birthplace. He was baptized here in 1483 and died here in 1546. Explore the town with your local guide, taking time to visit the houses of both Luther's birth and death. Eisleben is also a relatively industrial city, as it has been one of Germany's copper-mining centers since the 14th century. Visit the Burg und Schloss Allstedt This is a preserved castle and palace holds a history spanning from the 13th to 19th century. Arrive in Leipzig Continue to Leipzig, a city with a rich musical and political history. Today Leipzig is a major German transportation and intellectual hub, boasting Europe's largest train station, and a vibrant student atmosphere. Overnight in the Leipzig Region Day 5: Erfurt Eisenach Transfer to Eisenach via Erfurt Visit the Augustinian Monastery Today you'll travel to Erfurt to visit the Augustinian monastery where Martin Luther began his years as a theologian. The monastery functions as a Lutheran church and cloister, but the main attractions are the historical library and Brother Martin's monastery quarters. Arrive in Eisenach Travel to Eisenach, a small town in the Thuringia province of Germany. Eisenach's importance to Germany history lies mainly with the Wartburg Castle and its connections with Martin Luther. Visit Schloss Wartburg Get ready for a hike up to Wartburg Castle! This medieval fortress was built in 1067 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is most famous for housing Martin Luther after his excommunication, while he translated the New Testament into German. Visit the Lutherhaus Visit the Lutherhaus, Martin Luther's boyhood home where he stayed with the Cotta family from 1498 to 1501. Overnight in the Eisenach Region Day 6: Worms Marburg Heidelberg Transfer to Heidelberg via Marburg and Worms Guided Sightseeing of Marburg Enjoy a guided sightseeing of Marburg, visiting the Marburg Castle, exploring the Old City, and St. Elizabeth's Church, where the grave of Paul von Hindenburg is located. See the Reformation Monument in Worms Welcome to Worms, arguably the oldest city in Germany and site of the historic Edict of Worms in 1521. Travel under medieval bridges and through timeless villages to find the largest Luther Monument in the world. Walkthrough a hall of Reformation heroes as you're greeted by the patina-green statues of everyone from Philip of Hesse to John Wycliffe.
Arrive in Heidelberg Arrive in Heidelberg, one of Germany's most beautiful towns, standing proudly on the River Neckar. While its castle dominates the skyline, the town also has wonderful shopping and a vibrant nightlife due to its large university population. Overnight in Heidelberg Day 7: Heidelberg Reformation Tour of Heidelberg Your tour begins with a visit to the most famous church in Germany. Daylight pours through the windows of The Church of the Holy Spirit, and its tall Gothic steeple stands high above the village houses. Head for Old Town ( Altstadt ) and into historic Heidelberg University-which was established by the Holy Roman Empire but became a home for leading Reformers after Luther's disputation in 1518. Visit Heidelberg Castle and Wine Barrel See Heidelberg's 700-year-old Schloß (palace) and its famous Faß (wine barrel), the world's largest. From the castle's rose-colored walls and historic battlements, enjoy a stunning view of the Neckar Valley, where Homo heidelbergensis roamed 500,000 years ago. Neckar Valley Cruise Enjoy a cruise along the Neckar River, where you'll see many Old World castles perched along the riverbank. The excursion includes a visit to 13th-century Dilsberg Fortress. Overlooking the Valley, Dilsberg was once the most powerful fortress in the region. Overnight in Heidelberg Day 8: Schleitheim Zurich Transfer to Zurich via Schleitheim Visit Anabaptist Cave Located on the outskirts of Schleitheim, is an Anabaptist cave with the Anabaptists used to worship. Your Group Leader will lead your group on a walking path into the cave to explore. Arrive in Zurich Discover the charms of beautiful Zurich. Stroll along the River Limmat and take time to discover the narrow streets and the restored buildings of the historic old town. Be sure to sample Switzerland's world-famous cheese and chocolates. Overnight in Zurich Day 9: Zurich Free Afternoon in Zurich Take some time to explore this visually stunning city on your own. You may choose to visit a museum or two, do some shopping or just walking around the city with your camera to capture Zurich's stunning backdrop! Overnight in Zurich Day 10: Geneva Transfer to Geneva Seat of the Protestant Reformation, it was here that Calvin preached, Voltaire philosophized, Victor Hugo wrote, and Rousseau came up with ideas that helped ignite the French Revolution. The city is also home to the United Nations building as well as countless parks and islands of great natural beauty. Walking Tour of Geneva Geneva is the center of international diplomacy, as well as a small, friendly town. Set on the banks of Lake Geneva (also known as Lac Léman) between the Alps and the Jura mountains in the Southwest corner of Switzerland, Geneva was the site of the founding of both the League of Nations and the Red Cross. Follow your Tour Director past the Palais des Nations and the European headquarters of the United Nations (Switzerland is not a member of the U.N. itself, nor does it belong to NATO). Later, stroll along the beautiful lakefront-during the summer months behold the Jet d'eau, the world's tallest fountain. Visit St. Peter's Cathedral With its mismatched towers, conflicting Romanesque and Neoclassical styles and single bright green spire, this cathedral appears to have multiple personalities. The interesting aesthetic continues inside, where remnants of this once-catholic church can be seen in stained glass windows-but lies hidden behind whitewashed walls that the Calvinists have covered up. You'll also get to see John Calvin's chair resting near the entrance to the north tower spiraling staircase. Overnight in the Geneva Region Day 11: Return Home Transfer to the Airport for Your Return Flight Your Tour Director assists with your transfer to the airport, where you'll check in for your return flight home.
