A A INTRODUCTION The IER 567 Printer is designed to print ATB type travel documents. Optionally, the printer can be enhanced with a magnetic module to process data encoded on the magnetic stripe on the back of the ATB documents. The following two printing technologies are available for this printer: Direct thermal (standard equipment) to print on heat-sensitive media. Thermal transfer method (option). Printing is in this case achieved by transferring melted ink dots from a ribbon contained in a cartridge to the media. Media is supplied: Continuously from the rear of the printer, via three feeders, two of which are fitted as standard and the third is optional. (Fanfold stocks of blank media can be placed either underneath the printer or inside a cabinet on which the printer stands). Via the front feeder slot, when reading, revalidating or updating the information on a coupon. Another optional feature, the stock control number (SCN) reading function, is available to prevent fraudulent use of blank stock. The IER 567 Printer can be installed on top of a cabinet containing two or three media stocks, which are accessed by opening a door or drawer. With a two-door cabinet, the third stock can be set up outside the cabinet on a foldaway stand. The two or three internal stocks can be secured with key-locking catches. A secure container (stacker) can be used if the printer is installed on top of a cabinet. 6

Use this key to clear the warning messages from the LCD. Also press this key to recover from an error condition, once you have solved the problem. Pressing this key when no message is displayed has no effect, except on coupons inserted through the front feed slot: They are ejected from the printer when this key is pressed (and no message displayed). The Esc key does not change the mode of operation, the printer stays in On-Line mode. b) Menu Navigation Mode In this mode the following keys are active: Key Function Description On/Off line Menu key Switching to the On-Line mode This key can be considered a shortcut to the On-Line mode. It can be used any time to stop navigation and to exit the Menu Navigation mode, no matter where you are located in the menus. Up-Arrow key Down-Arrow key Navigation Navigation These two arrow keys let you navigate through the various submenus. They directly control the -cursor that indicates which submenu you can select. 23

6) Inserting a Coupon through the Front Feed Slot (Option) a) Insert the coupon through the feed slot (1) as shown in the Figure below. b) If the coupon size is not acceptable, the coupon is rejected through the feed slot. c) Request coupon printing by sending the corresponding message from the host to the printer. d) The On line indicator blinks rapidly. e) The coupon is printed and ejected into the front stacker (2). 1 Fig. 25 2 27

F F PERIODIC MAINTENANCE Once a year, the printer, and the printhead and drive rollers in particular, should undergo the dust removal and cleaning procedure described in the Level 1 Maintenance Manual. Depending on the media used and the environment, it may be necessary to increase the printer cleaning frequency. This dust removal and cleaning procedure entails three essential operations: Removal of any dust and fluff from the printer (including the paper path, sensors and burster blade) Printhead, platen, drive roller and solenoid cleaning Final checks CAUTION: Before starting any cleaning operation make sure you have disconnected the AC power cable and the data I/O cable from the printer. We recommend the use of the IER cleaning kit (IER P/N S32132A) to carry out these maintenance operations. 1) General Printer Cleaning Refer to the figure on page 27. a) Power down the printer and open the operator access door. b) Remove the media from the rear feeders and remove any documents from the front stacker and the reject bin. c) Raise the magnetic module (1) and hold it in this position. d) Open the hinged paper guide (2). e) Pull the rear feeder assembly flange (3) and rotate it into its upposition. f) Using the compressed air can in the cleaning kit, IER P/N S32132A, remove the dust from the entire paper path. g) Lower the magnetic module into its locked position. h) Return the hinged paper guide to its closed position. i) Return the rear feeder assembly flange to its original position. 28

1 2 3 Fig. 26 29

2) Cleaning the Printhead and the Platen a) Open the hinged operator access door and push the printhead towards the rear of the printer (direction of arrow A) to the stop (arrow B). Fig. 27 Fig. 28 30

b) Rotate the printhead up and towards the rear of the printer (direction of arrow C). Fig. 29 c) Clean the printhead using an alcohol-filled foam swab from the cleaning bag, IER P/N T106140. Fig. 30 31

d) Clean the entire platen (5) surface using a soft cloth slightly dampened with cleaning solution from the cleaning kit. Fig. 31 e) Tip the thermal head module forward in its mounting and push forward in the direction of the two arrows, until it locks into position with two audible clicks. Fig. 32 32

3) Cleaning the Optional Magnetic Head a) Using a swab from the cleaning kit slightly dampened with cleaning solution contained in the kit, clean the entire surface of the magnetic head. Fig. 33 b) Clean the entire surface of the magnetic head pad using the same swab and cleaning solution Fig. 34 33

4) Final Checks Having completed above periodic maintenance operations, carry out the following: Make sure the magnetic head (1) is firmly locked in its seat. Check that the hinged paper guide (2) is locked in its closed position. Ensure that the mobile rear feeder assembly flange (3) is correctly positioned on its fixed counterpart. Ensure that the printhead (4) is correctly positioned in its holder i.e. pushed all the way towards the front of the printer and locked in this position (see Page 32). Reconnect the printer to the host (see Page 16) and to the AC line power (see Page 16). Reload the printer with media (see Page 18). Print a status coupon (see Page 26) to check for correct printer operation. 2 1 3 4 Fig. 35 34

G G Operating Faults Operating faults usually generate an error message on the display and/or may cause a paper jam inside the printer. IMPORTANT: If the recommended action does not solve the problem encountered, call the Help Desk. Having solved the problem, imperatively press the Enter key or the Esc key to confirm. 1) List of Error Messages a) Error Messages Addressed to the Systems Engineer The messages not listed below concern the systems engineer or the Help Desk. b) Messages Intended for the Operator 5 6 7 R E A DY L i n k d o wn Means that the printer is ready, but not connected to the host.
