Transrapid International A joint company of Siemens and ThyssenKrupp The future is already here The Transrapid maglev system in Shanghai

The future is already here in Shanghai Shanghai is a city of superlatives bold architecture, breathtaking growth and contagious vitality. The future at least in China s biggest city is already here. More than 16 million people live in this city situated on the banks of the Huangpu River. And, every day, countless visitors come to the Paris of the East. And air passengers arriving at Pudong International Airport are able to admire Shanghai s latest attraction: the Transrapid. For when it came to building a link to the new airport, this city of millions put stock in the future. This new maglev system is now giving a world premiere performance in Shanghai. 2

From the city to the airport just like flying Pudong International Airport is the most modern airport in Asia. And, thanks to the Transrapid, it is the only one worldwide that passengers can fly to at zero altitude. In Shanghai, air passengers begin their journey right in the heart of the Lujiazui financial district. Here, at Long Yang Road Station, they board the Transrapid and fly at zero altitude directly to Pudong International Airport a distance of 30 kilometers in under eight minutes. From the Transrapid station inside the airport, travelers only have to walk a short distance to reach their plane. 5

At a speed of 430 km/h, the Transrapid whisks along the doubletrack guideway faster than any other rail system in everyday normal service. Operating fully automatically, it is controlled, protected and monitored by the control center in Long Yang Road Station. The first train in the world drove from Stockton to Darlington in England. And, not long after, trains were operating on all the world s continents. Almost 200 years later, the first Transrapid is being used for passenger services in Shanghai, signaling the dawn of a new rail transportation era whose first protagonist is running between Long Yang Road Station and Pudong International Airport. 6

Transrapid s high-speed world premiere The world s first commercial Transrapid route in Shanghai was completed within a record time of less than two years the result of successful German-Chinese collaboration. Within the framework of the project, the client Shanghai Maglev Transportation Development Co. Ltd. (SMTDC) was responsible for erecting the guideway and the infrastructure. The German consortium composed of Siemens, ThyssenKrupp and Transrapid International supplied the operating system. This included the vehicles, the propulsion system, the power supply and the control system as well as the system engineering and the guideway technology. The contract was signed in January 2001 and construction work started two months later. The inaugural run, with high-ranking government officials from both countries on board, took place very soon after on December 31, 2002. During the subsequent commissioning phase, nearly half a million passengers took the opportunity to travel at 430 km/h between Long Yang Road Station and Pudong International Airport. Then, in November 2003, the Transrapid flew over the 30-kilometer route at a speed of 501 km/h, setting a world record for commercial maglev systems. Since Spring 2004,Transrapid has been providing a regular passenger service safely, punctually and reliably. 8

Over short or long distances, on the right track Transrapid is not only fast, its contactless technology is also especially eco-friendly and cost-effective. Its flexible design makes this maglev ideal not only for short-distance applications but also as a fast urban link on medium and long-distance routes. 10

Depending on the application, the Transrapid can travel at speeds of up to 500 km/h but is absolutely safe and quieter than any other mode. It has the lowest specific energy consumption of all means of transportation. Its guideway requires only a small amount of land and its route alignment can be flexibly adapted to the surrounding landscape. Even tunnels and bridges are, for the most part, unnecessary as the Transrapid can easily climb gradients as steep as 10 percent. Higher performance does not mean higher costs. At least, not in the Transrapid s case. Given the same level of investment, its operating and maintenance costs are substantially lower than those of modern high-speed trains. The reason for this is the contactless technology because the amount of wear is very low where no friction exists. This high-speed magnetic levitation system combines power, economy and environmental compatibility. It is setting new standards and creating transportation solutions for the future as demonstrated in Shanghai today. 11

Transrapid International - A joint company of Siemens and ThyssenKrupp tk Transrapid International With the Transportation Systems (TS) division, Siemens is one of the leading partners to the international railway industry. As single source supplier and system integrator, TS combines comprehensive know-how in its fields of competence Automation & Power, Rolling Stock, Turnkey Systems and Integrated Services from operation control systems to traction power supplies to rolling stock for mass transit, regional and mainline services. Forward-looking service concepts and extensive experience in project management complement the portfolio. Components supplied for the Transrapid: propulsion system, power supply, operation control system, communication systems and conductor rails. ThyssenKrupp has decades of experience with locomotive and wagon building and played a significant role in the successful development of the ICE. Based on the knowhow acquired, ThyssenKrupp realized the necessity to overcome the technical and commercial limitations of the wheel-on-rail technology. With the proof of function of the longstator magnetic levitation technology and the leadership in the development of the system, ThyssenKrupp laid the foundation for the Transrapid system which is now being implemented. Components supplied for the Transrapid: vehicles, propulsion components and guideway equipment. To complete the partnership for the Transrapid system, Siemens and ThyssenKrupp have established Transrapid International as a joint company for systems engineering, system integration, marketing, and maintenance support.
