2 Basis for interoperability European Rail Traffic Management System from Siemens Transportation Systems and Nokia Siemens Networks Interoperability for rail networks has traditionally been hampered by different train control systems, communication channels and operating regulations that have evolved over the years. The train control and communication systems developed by Siemens cater for interoperability on the national and international level. 3 Proven success Our ETCS/GSM-R references Spain AVE S102 and S103 trains Madrid Barcelona Two different train types are being produced for the world s fastest high-speed line between Madrid and Barcelona for RENFE: Siemens is producing the Velaro E (AVE S103 is the official name for the operating train from RENFE) and Bombardier and Talgo the TALGO 350 (AVE S102) all trains designed for a speed of 350 km/h. In 2006, the Velaro E set a new world speed record of km/h for series-production trains and since June 2007, the first passengers can take advantage of the regular service between Madrid Sevilla and Madrid Tarragona. Siemens ETCS reference projects Germany ETCS Level 2 project Berlin Halle / Leipzig German Railways has chosen the line between Berlin and Halle/Leipzig as the first commercial European line for ETCS Level 2 operation. The 140 km stretch of double-track is part of the Hamburg Berlin Munich connection. The section contains four Radio Block Centres (RBC), each connected via local area network (LAN) to the relevant electronic interlocking, and approx Eurobalises. Since May 2006 the AVE S102 trains have been in passenger operation with GSM-R technology level 1. The project sees real interoperability demonstrated for the first time in commercial operation. The Netherlands ETCS Level 2 project HSL Zuid The HSL Zuid project consists of two newly constructed double-track lines with each section about 50 km long. The maximum speed of traffic is 300 km/h. Each of these sections is equipped with a Simis W interlocking system and an RBC. The project caters for a national handover between HSL Zuid RBCs and the Belgian RBC. Voice GSM-R Netherlands Over GSM-R Voice Cab Radios are in service with NS Reizigers in the Netherlands. In addition to these, a GSM-R Acknowledgement Centre and a train location information system, which provides enhanced location information has also been supplied for the GSM-R network in the Netherlands. China, MOR, km Saudi Arabia, SRO, km Greece, OSE, 700 km Turkey, TCDD Turkish Railway Trials are running in 4 European countries and in China.

At present Europe is confronted with a variety of train control systems that obstruct rather than enhance the flow of rail traffic. As a consequence, both manufacturers and operators have cooperated in the development of a common standard to facilitate and promote traffic flow. ERTMS consists, essentially, of two components: The Global System for Mobile Communication for Railways (GSM-R) The European Train Control System ETCS. The use of the same communication system by all railways is the ultimate precondition for operating international rail traffic without replacing equipment. The system developed by Siemens Transportation Systems and Nokia Siemens Networks provides the platform for end-to-end-solutions for railway communications and train control in an international environment. GSM-R is based on the tested and well proven GSM standard. This means that the GSM-R platform can evolve hand-inhand with any future advances in GSM technology. In addition to the GSM standard, railway operators can make use of features such as location-dependent addressing, functional numbering, group communication including shunting communication, and emergency calls, thus fulfilling all the communication needs of a modern rail system.

5 tem (ERTMS) in Europe Balise Track Vacancy Detection Interlocking GSM-R is the data carrier for the Siemens Trainguard 200 ETCS Level 2 train control system. The onboard computer has a continuous input of information for calculating speed and braking profiles. This means that there is now one digital radio system to replace all existing communication systems, which will help to reduce costs, improve interoperability and safety. Communications between drivers and other parties are handled by staff operating from interlockings or control centres, using a dispatcher terminal that has been specially designed to maximise the advantages of GSM-R. During an EVC (European Vital Computer) Vehicle Antenna and Eurobalise S21 DMI (Driver-Machine Interface) Open LEU (Lineside Electronic Unit) emergency the transmission and receipt of calls are recorded by an Acknowledgement Centre, which facilitates any subsequent post incident analysis. Within the GSM-R system cab radios play a vital role. The Siemens cab radio incorporates all the EIRENE standards and so ensures safe, easy and efficient operation in any rail network equipped with GSM-R. Three versions are available Voice only, Data only and Voice/Data combined. The data version provides a secure and reliable channel for data transmission in the Trainguard 200 ETCS Level 2 system.
