But first they must overcome the obstacle of an FC København side seeking to return to the group stage after a twoyear absence. Although, technically speaking, the sides have never met before, APOEL did face one of København's parent clubs, Boldklubben 193, precisely 3 years ago. The merger of B193 with Kjøbenhavns Boldklub in 1992 created the modernday København, but prior to that, in 1979/8, B193 took on APOEL in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup preliminary round. The Danish side won the first leg 6 at home on 15 August 1979 and completed a resounding aggregate triumph with a 1 victory in the return on 8 September. Match background København's goal is to secure their first appearance in the group stage since they first made it through in 26/7 by defeating Myllykosken Pallo47 and AFC Ajax in successive qualifying rounds. Those triumphs reversed a trend that brought the Danish outfit defeats at the qualifying stage on four occasions (21/2, 23/4, 24/5 and 27/8). The Copenhagen side also fell short of the group stage in an earlier version of the competition format in 1993/94, losing 7 on aggregate to AC Milan in the second round. To reach the playoff round, København swept aside Montenegro's FK Mogren 12 on aggregate before a more closely contested tie against Stabæk IF. The Danish champions won 31 in Copenhagen Jesper Grønkjær and Cesar Santin the scorers before holding on for a goalless draw in Norway. APOEL secured a surprise 21 aggregate success against FK Partizan in the third qualifying round. After a 2 home victory via goals from Nenad Mirosavljević and Marcin Żewłakow, Ivan Jovanović's men limited the Serbian titleholders to a singlegoal victory in the return in Belgrade. They had earlier defeated Faroese side EB/Streymur 5 on aggregate in the second qualifying round. Both clubs competed in the UEFA Cup in 28/9. København reached the Round of 32, while APOEL advanced no further than the first round. Team ties As a player, København coach Ståle Solbakken appeared for the Norwegian national team in a 2 away win against Cyprus in February 1995. He was later in charge of the Norwegian Under19 side beaten 1 at home by Cyprus in November 22. Last updated 18/8/9 13:5:53CET Match background 2

FC København Tuesday 18 August 29 2.45CET Competition format The UEFA Champions, UEFA's most prestigious club competition, will undergo a series of significant changes from 29/1 following a decision from the UEFA Executive Committee in November 27. The main points are: No changes to the format of the main competition, which will still involve 32 teams, split into eight groups of four in the group stage, followed by the knockout phase. The eight teams that finish the groups in third place cross over into the knockout phase of the new UEFA Europa, formerly the UEFA Cup. The 29/1 access list has been changed according to the following principles: 22 teams (21 teams + the titleholder) qualify directly for the group phase instead of 16. The three national associations with the highest UEFA coefficient ranking will each have three teams who gain automatic entry to the group stage, with the countries ranked 4 to 6 in the standings having two automatic qualifiers and the associations ranked 7 to 12 having one. As from the 29/1 season onwards, there will be four qualifying rounds (including a playoff round), to be played in homeandaway ties, to complete the 32 participants in the UEFA Champions group stage. There are two qualifying routes; the Champions Path and the NonChampions Path. Champions Path: The first qualifying round comprises two twolegged ties involving the champions of the countries ranked 5 to 53 in UEFA competition. The winners of those ties progress to the second qualifying round where they are joined by the champions of the 32 countries ranked 17 to 49 (except Liechtenstein). The victorious sides from those 17 ties join the champions from the associations ranked 14 to 16 in the third qualifying round, with the winners of those ten pairings reaching the playoff round. These five playoff ties will take place on a homeandaway basis with the winners qualifying for the UEFA Champions group stage. NonChampions Path: The thirdplaced side from the sixthranked member association, plus the runnersup from the associations ranked 7 to 15, start the competition in the third qualifying round. The winners of these five ties progress to the playoff round, where they are joined by the fourthplaced sides from the associations ranked 1 to 3 and the thirdplaced teams from the associations ranked 4 and 5. The victorious teams from the five playoff ties qualify for the UEFA Champions group stage. Teams from the Champions Path and the NonChampions Path cannot meet in UEFA Champions qualifying. The losing team from each of the UEFA Champions third qualifying round ties will go into the UEFA Europa playoffs. The losing team from each of the UEFA Champions playoff ties will go into the UEFA Europa group stage. The team who finishes in third position in each of the UEFA Champions groups goes into the UEFA Europa Round of 32. The four best thirdranked teams will be seeded for the Round of 32 with the group winners of the UEFA Europa group stage. The matches in the UEFA Champions first knockout round will be split over four weeks instead of two, using dates reserved for the UEFA club competition in February and March to maximise live match opportunities. The final is to be played on a Saturday, with kickoff time at 2.45 CET. The UEFA Champions playoff rounds will be centrally marketed by UEFA in accordance with the concept already used for the group stage. Last updated 18/8/9 13:5:53CET Competition format 11
