3 Tuesday August.5CET (.5 local time) Match background Having never previously progressed beyond the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions eague, hope to finally make their group stage debut this season, but must first find a way past miserly. The Polish side eked out the narrowest of firstleg leads thanks to Patryk Małecki's stminute goal. Previous meetings The sides had never met in UEFA competition before the first leg while APOE had not faced Polish opposition. Wisła's only previous experience of Cypriot opposition prior to the first leg came against AC Omonia in the / UEFA Champions eague second qualifying rounds, when they won 5 at home and drew away. Maciej Żurawski, who scored twice in both legs, played for Omonia in 9/, helping them to the Cypriot title. Match background Wisła, European Cup quarterfinalists in 9/9, have won all five of their games in Europe this season. Before their firstleg loss APOE were unbeaten in their last five European games since a loss at Getafe CF in the first leg of last season's UEFA Europa eague playoffs. They did not concede a goal in their first four European outings this season. APOE have gone six matches without a home defeat in Europe, since a loss to FC Porto in their penultimate UEFA Champions eague group stage game in 9/. Wisla have won three of their last four European away games, the one exception being their loss at Qarabağ FK in last term's third qualifying round second leg. Polish champions Wisła have yet to feature in the UEFA Champions eague group stage, though they did appear in the UEFA Cup group stage in /. This is the seventh time Wisła have featured in UEFA Champions eague qualifying. In each of their six previous campaigns they bowed out in the third qualifying round, when this represented the last hurdle before the group stage, against some daunting opposition (FC Barcelona in / and /9, and Real Madrid CF in /5). This season's victories over Skonto FC (agg: ) and PFC itex ovech (agg: 5) were the first time Wisła had won successive qualifying round games. APOE made their only UEFA Champions eague group stage appearance in 9/, the season after Anorthosis Famagusta FC became the first Cypriot side to reach that stage. Under Ivan Jovanović, their coach since, APOE finished bottom of their section but twice held Club Atlético de Madrid and earned a draw at Chelsea FC. They lost their other three games by onegoal margins. APOE made it from the first to the third qualifying round in /, but lost on aggregate to AEK Athens FC. AC Sparta Praha eliminated them in the second qualifying round (agg: ) in /5, and BATE overran them (agg: 5) in the first qualifying round in /. In 9/ they went from the second qualifying round to the group stage, beating EB/Streymur (agg: 5), FK Partizan (agg: ) and, in the playoffs, FC København (agg: ). APOE passed through this season's second and third qualifying rounds without conceding, beating KS Skënderbeu (agg: ) and ŠK Slovan Bratislava (agg: ). They are unbeaten in five UEFA Champions eague qualifying ties. Team ties Now at GKS Bełchatów, midfielder Kamil Kosowski represented both clubs, playing for Wisła from 999 and again in and winning three Polish league titles. He represented APOE from and was among the scorers as they beat FCK in the playoffs to reach the 9/ UEFA Champions eague group stage. Fellow Poles Marcin Żewłakow and Adrian Sikora also featured in APOE's maiden group stage campaign. Bartłomiej Jamróz was at Wisla from 99 to 99 and at APOE in 5/. Other Polish players to represent APOE are Wojciech Kowalczyk who was the first in / Andrzej Kryszałowicz and Jarosław Popiela. Former Poland coach Jerzy Engel had spells in charge of both sides. He oversaw Wisła's 5 aggregate loss to Panathinaikos FC in the 5/ third qualifying round, then moved on to take charge of APOE, leading them to the Cypriot Cup that same season. 13 Tuesday August.5CET (.5 local time) Competition format The UEFA Champions eague, UEFA's most prestigious club competition, underwent a series of significant changes in 9/ following a decision from the UEFA Executive Committee in November. This format remains in place for /. The main points were: No changes to the format of the main competition, which still involves teams, split into eight groups of four in the group stage, followed by the knockout phase. The eight teams that finish the groups in third place cross over into the UEFA Europa eague knockout phase. The 9/ access list was changed according to the following principles: teams ( teams + the titleholder) qualify directly for the group stage instead of. The three national associations with the highest UEFA coefficient ranking each had three teams gain automatic entry to the group stage, with the countries ranked to in the standings having two automatic qualifiers and the associations ranked to having one. Since 9/ there have been four qualifying rounds (including a playoff round), played in homeandaway ties, to complete the participants in the UEFA Champions eague group stage. There are two qualifying routes; the Champions Route and the eague Route. Champions Route: The first qualifying round comprises two twolegged ties involving the champions of the countries ranked 5 to 5 in UEFA competition. The winners of those ties progress to the second qualifying round where they are joined by the champions of the countries ranked to 9 (except iechtenstein). The victorious sides from those ties join the champions from the associations ranked to in the third qualifying round, with the winners of those ten pairings reaching the playoff round. These five playoff ties will take place on a homeandaway basis with the winners qualifying for the UEFA Champions eague group stage. eague Route: The thirdplaced side from the sixthranked member association, plus the runnersup from the associations ranked to 5, start the competition in the third qualifying round. The winners of these five ties progress to the playoff round, where they are joined by the fourthplaced sides from the associations ranked to and the thirdplaced teams from the associations ranked and 5. The victorious teams from the five playoff ties qualify for the UEFA Champions eague group stage. Teams from the Champions Route and the eague Route cannot meet in UEFA Champions eague qualifying. The losing team from each of the UEFA Champions eague third qualifying round ties will go into the UEFA Europa eague playoffs. The losing team from each of the UEFA Champions eague playoff ties will go into the UEFA Europa eague group stage. The team who finishes in third position in each of the UEFA Champions eague groups goes into the UEFA Europa eague Round of. The four best thirdranked teams will be seeded for the Round of with the group winners of the UEFA Europa eague group stage. The matches in the UEFA Champions eague first knockout round will be split over four weeks instead of two, using dates reserved for the UEFA club competition in February and March to maximise live match opportunities.
