3 Wednesday August.CET (. local time) Match background reached the UEFA Champions eague round of in /, but have their work cut out to make it through to this season's group stage against a fearless side. The Danish side were caught cold in the first leg as Plzeň ran out victors in Copenhagen, Sölvi Ottesen's own goal giving them a ndminute advantage increased by Václav Pilař. Although Ottesen pulled one back, substitute Martin Fillo added a fine third to complete a memorable win for the Czech side. Previous meetings The teams had never met in UEFA competition before the first leg, while Plzeň had not previously played Danish opponents. FCK have been paired with Czech sides on three previous occasions in Europe. Kjøbenhavns BK, one of the clubs that merged to form FCK in, lost on aggregate to FC Baník Ostrava in the / UEFA Cup first round, while FCK lost over two legs to FC Hradec Králové in the first round of the / UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Thus FCK have lost both of their previous twolegged ties against Czech sides, though in the / UEFA Europa eague group stage they did beat AC Sparta Praha at home and in Prague, Dame N'Doye scoring three of those goals. Match background The first leg was the first time FCK had lost or even conceded a goal since losing at home against Chelsea FC in last season's UEFA Champions eague round of ; of the subsequent three games they drew one and won two. Plzeň are unbeaten in three European home games under Pavel Vrba having lost only their first continental fixture. They went down to FC Bayern München in the first round of the / UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Prior to their win at Shamrock Rovers FC in this season's UEFA Champions eague third qualifying round, which completed a aggregate success, København had gone three games without scoring a goal on their European travels. FCK have lost the first leg at home in UEFA competition on nine previous occasions and lost eight of those ties, most recently against Chelsea last season. Their sole win came in the / UEFA Cup preliminary round against FC Jazz ( home, away). 12 Wednesday August.CET (. local time) Competition format The UEFA Champions eague, UEFA's most prestigious club competition, underwent a series of significant changes in / following a decision from the UEFA Executive Committee in November. This format remains in place for /. The main points were: No changes to the format of the main competition, which still involves teams, split into eight groups of four in the group stage, followed by the knockout phase. The eight teams that finish the groups in third place cross over into the UEFA Europa eague knockout phase. The / access list was changed according to the following principles: teams ( teams + the titleholder) qualify directly for the group stage instead of. The three national associations with the highest UEFA coefficient ranking each had three teams gain automatic entry to the group stage, with the countries ranked to in the standings having two automatic qualifiers and the associations ranked to having one. Since / there have been four qualifying rounds (including a playoff round), played in homeandaway ties, to complete the participants in the UEFA Champions eague group stage. There are two qualifying routes; the Champions Route and the eague Route. Champions Route: The first qualifying round comprises two twolegged ties involving the champions of the countries ranked to in UEFA competition. The winners of those ties progress to the second qualifying round where they are joined by the champions of the countries ranked to (except iechtenstein). The victorious sides from those ties join the champions from the associations ranked to in the third qualifying round, with the winners of those ten pairings reaching the playoff round. These five playoff ties will take place on a homeandaway basis with the winners qualifying for the UEFA Champions eague group stage. eague Route: The thirdplaced side from the sixthranked member association, plus the runnersup from the associations ranked to, start the competition in the third qualifying round. The winners of these five ties progress to the playoff round, where they are joined by the fourthplaced sides from the associations ranked to and the thirdplaced teams from the associations ranked and. The victorious teams from the five playoff ties qualify for the UEFA Champions eague group stage. Teams from the Champions Route and the eague Route cannot meet in UEFA Champions eague qualifying. The losing team from each of the UEFA Champions eague third qualifying round ties will go into the UEFA Europa eague playoffs. The losing team from each of the UEFA Champions eague playoff ties will go into the UEFA Europa eague group stage. The team who finishes in third position in each of the UEFA Champions eague groups goes into the UEFA Europa eague Round of. The four best thirdranked teams will be seeded for the Round of with the group winners of the UEFA Europa eague group stage. The matches in the UEFA Champions eague first knockout round will be split over four weeks instead of two, using dates reserved for the UEFA club competition in February and March to maximise live match opportunities. The final is to be played on a Saturday, with kickoff time at. CET.
