3 FC Basel CFR Cluj Tuesday August.CET (. local time) St. JakobPark, Basel Match background FC Basel and CFR Cluj square off in the UEFA Champions eague playoffs two years after the Swiss side suffered an unwelcome upset against the Romanian outfit. Basel went down to CFR in their opening / UEFA Champions eague group stage fixture and although the Swiss side bounced back to win the return at St. JakobPark, the memory of that first meeting means there will be no risk of them underestimating their opponents. Basel won through to these playoffs by beating FC Flora Tallinn on aggregate, then scraping past Molde FK in the third qualifying round albeit only after Yann Sommer had saved a lastminute penalty in the second leg. Ioan Andone's CFR, for their part, were aggregate winners against FC Slovan iberec. Previous meetings Ionuţ Rada and acina Traoré scored twice inside minutes to set up CFR's historic victory over Basel on September. Valentin Stocker pulled a goal back but it was not enough. Federico Almerares's thminute strike settled the encounter in Switzerland on November that year, a result that confirmed the elimination of a CFR side who lost Felice Piccolo to a red card after minutes. The result kept alive Basel's hopes of progress, though they would eventually finish third. The club which scores the greater aggregate of goals qualifies for the next round, with away goals and then penalties used to determine the winner in the event of a draw. Group stage The ten winners in the playoff round ties five from the bestplaced path and five from the champions path join automatic entrants in the team group stage. The clubs are split into eight groups of four teams, who play home and away against each of their pool opponents between September and December to decide which two teams from each section advance to the first knockout round. The thirdplace finishers in each group enter the UEFA Europa eague round of.
