Can I use my old recycle bin? No. Recycling will now be Automated like the Trash. The only container you can use for Recycling will be the 65 Gallon Green wheeled cart. What shall I do with my old recycle bin? You can use them around your house or yard. The Town will not be taking them away. Can I put bagged Trash in my Recycle Toter: Recycling will now be AUTOMATED WEEKLY and SINGLE STREAM! What is Automated Single Stream you ask?! Your new 65 Gallon Green Wheeled toter will be used for all of your recycling. Everything that s recyclable will go into this cart and be picked up by an Automated Recycle truck. What about cardboard? Good question. You need to make it small enough to fit into your green wheeled toter and it also has to be small enough that when it s emptied into the Recycling truck it leaves the container. If it s too big it will remain stuck in the wheeled toter! No. The Recycle Toter is just like the previous Recycle bins and should have no Trash contained in it. It will not be emptied if Trash is found in the Recycle Toter. What is NOT recyclable? Styrofoam is not recyclable in Burlington. NO Styrofoam peanuts either. Pizza Boxes are also not recyclable. Those are soiled with cheese and oil and are not recycled even though they have a recycling sign on them. Construction & Demolition Debris (C&D) NOT allowed in Trash The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection bans the disposal of C&D materials with regular trash. Disposal of C&D from household building or renovation projects is the homeowner's responsibility. Debris includes treated and untreated wood, brick, concrete, asphalt and similar items. Residents must contact a licensed C&D disposal company. Consider donating reusable building material to a non-profit such as Habitat for Humanity.
Frequently Asked Questions on Trash: What items should not be placed in the blue trash toter? All waste should be placed in regular trash bags prior to being discarded in the blue toter. This keeps the toter clean and odor-free. Items that should not be placed in the toter include, but are not limited to; ALL recyclables, construction materials, tires, motor oil, paint, hot ashes, gasoline, hazardous materials, yard waste, etc. May a resident place trash bags outside the toter? Only approved Town of Burlington "overflow bags" will be accepted. The cost is 5 bags for $10 and they should be placed next to the Toter. You must pay for your bags at the Tax Office and pick them up at the DPW office. Or for more convenience they are available at local Supermarkets. These "overflow bags" are to be used OUTSIDE of the trash toter. You do not need to purchase these bags if all your trash fits in the toter. If the lid does not close you should purchase the Burlington Orange Overflow Bags. TRASH and RECYCLE TOTERS must be at your curbside by 7:00 am on trash day. LATEX Paint containers must be empty or solidified prior to being picked up (Kitty Litter or sand will solidify left over paint). Liquids (i.e. thinners, oil, acids) and Medical Waste (i.e. oxygen tanks, needles) are not acceptable materials for pick up. ALL cardboard boxes need to be broken down and placed in your wheeled RECYCLE toter for pick up.
